Poli84’s Sprint Blue S3
Since I have finally begun getting the mods done on my car, thought I would begin a build thread.

I purchased the car in December 2010, the specs are as follows:
· 2009 MY10 S3 Sportback
· Sprint Blue
· 6 Speed Manual

Factory options:
Upgraded RNS-E
Open-Sky Panoramic Roof

In Australia we get Bluetooth, auto light/mirrors, cruise, etc as standard.

The only disappointment I had was that a FBMFSW was not fitted and I have standard circle MFSW.

Car had 22k kms when I purchased it.

Pictures from the dealer and my first snaps on the way back to the office.

First small mod was full interior light upgrade.

Some shots after clay, Poor Boy’s Pro Polish and P21s Carnauba Wax.
Met up with some fellow S3 owners.

After running the Revo 6 hour trial tune, I decided that although the difference between stock and Stage 1 was noticeable, it was not enough to knock my socks off (like others make it out to be).
Perhaps this was because I spent most of my 6 hour trial on the track so didn’t get to experience the extra grunt in normal driving conditions.

Non the less, I decided that I would go straight to Stage 2.

After speaking with my local specialist (also my Revo dealer) who is a Miltek supplier, he
suggested that he could build me a Miltek Dumpipe using parts he had around the shop.

A Miltek flange and flex joint were used with an OEM cat. The remaining sections are 3” stainless straight pipe.

The finished product is a work of art and sounds fantastic!
Such attention to detail in getting the angles and joins correct and they have tapered the end section so a cat-back can easily be added at a later date.

Love the sound my car makes on cold start now. Wish it was like this all the time.

At this time, I also added a Forge Twintake.

Installed this myself and was proud of my achievements as it is the first mechanical mod I have done myself.
Took about 2.5 hours but was happy with the finished job.

Matched this with a TTS engine cover and R8 oil cap.
(Thanks to Boydie for his help in getting this right.)

LOVE the sound the Twintake makes, although at first, some of the sounds it makes made me doubt my DIY skills and I thought I had some leaks.
Turns out, that is the unique “Darth Vadar” sounds of the Twintake.

BFI dog bone inserts were also purchased and installed at the time of the DP.
Honestly can’t tell any advantage, certainly more NVH at idle.

The last track day I did burnt out my already worn pads so a change was in order.
Wanted Ferodo DS2500s but after issues in sourcing locally, I went for EBC Yellowstuff.
Nothing intrinsically wrong with them but don’t love them at all.
They are very quiet and have less brake dust than OEM but they lack the bite I want.

Will swap these back out soon and go for the Ferodo’s as I originally wanted.
I guess I will upgrade the discs and lines also at some stage.
If a second hand BBK comes up and I have the free cash then that is also an option for me.
I get employee prices from Audi Australia so it’s hard to turn away from dirt cheap OEM discs!

The new kind of track days I was doing meant I needed a fire extinguisher in my car.
Through the design of a fellow Club Audi Vic member (and engineer), I had this great footwell extinguisher bracket made.
Over-engineered and excessively strong but looks great and allows the seat to slide over it (mostly).
Need to paint it black still!!

6723507757_cb6a426605_z.jpg

I also picked up a set of Toyo R888 semi-slicks for the track.
Was looking for a pair of used OEM wheels to mount them to but given my time constraints, couldn’t find any at a decent price.
Ended up buying some used Lenso wheels off a mate.
I know they are cheap and probably heavy, but they are track wheels and do the job.
Besides, I think they make the car look tough with their aggressive offset and I got heaps of comments on the day.

Great day on the track.
Knocked over 4 seconds from my PB at this track and the car drove absolutely brilliantly!
So much grunt and pull and the sounds!!!!

Finally got around to tinting the windows (almost took me a year).
I went with 35% front (darkest legal here in Australia) and 20% rears for that privacy look.
Didn’t like it at first. Felt too “boy racer” with my Sprint Blue but now love the tint.
6723483491_27aac6ccf9_z.jpg

Next small mod was Xenon white front fog lamps.
Went with Hoen Xenon White (might look at changing these to something that matches the DRL’s a bit better).

6723488987_16363ddf6d_z.jpg

I then finished off my white light with some Xenon white rego globes.
As you know, LED’s for the MY08+ are hard to come by due to the DIS error.
Am 100% happy with these Halogen Xenon white globes as they offer the same white light as LED without lighting up the rear of my car!

6723488171_14583d0037_z.jpg

Finally had the balls to ask for car parts from my girlfriend as a Christmas present and my wish came true.
H&R spacers with longer bolts – 10mm front and 12mm rear.

6723487283_237f649c74_z.jpg

Ideally I’d love to change the wheels to 19” Speedlines but considering I fitted brand new Conti CS3’s within the last 9 months, I want to get some wear out of them.
I hate the offset on the 8P but the S3 wheels have really grown on me and I really like them now.
Hoping these spacers will help them sit even better.

Will be fitting them this weekend as well as cleaning up and painting the rusted hubs and brake discs.

That’s it for now…

The list is long but dates are set.

March will see an Autotech HPFP fitted and the tune upgraded to Revo Stage 2+.
I’m hoping the OEM clutch will last but obviously this is an issue so a Sachs upgraded clutch is also in the pipe line.
I’m not one for launching the car but I do enjoy a spirited drive and my track days so will see how long it lasts.

Coilovers are in the pipeline and are very near.
Was going to go with Weitec but an opportunity has arisen so watch this space…

lovely car! excellent progress!

I'm confused though, how can you have a facelift car without FBSW?

Wow Poli, I have often wondered if I missed out on reading your build thread, ..so I'm very pleased to see I hadn't. Excellent write up, Matey and what a stunner of an S3 SB! Love the piccies and all of your mods to date, engine bay looks totally out of this world!! Keep up the good work!! xx

stunning car mate just a quick question when you fitted your tts engine cover did you have to get the rubber ball mounts so it would fit?

Thanks for the comments and kind words guys.
Still have a lot more to come but as well all know, finances get in the way.
Should be some good updates coming soon though.

Good question. I wish it wasn't so but the FBSW is still an option in Australia (even on the facelift).
It's only about $750 but the original owner did not check that box - instead he got bent over and paid $5500 for a factory RNSE!

Thanks Paulie!
Nothing compared to your beast! I was a bit slow getting this off the ground.

Mate , great write up and loving the number plate bulbs. Have got a link for these?
Thanks mate.
I purchased the number plate globes from here:
Autodynamic.com

Thanks to Paulie on this one, the hard work was already done!

Sure did mate.
Check out this thread, has all the info you could possible need!

Nice write up Poli and the car is looking great. Some crackin' mods under the bonnet too!

Nice one. TT-S engine bay mod is a corker, really like it. Given the price that some dreamers on e-Bay want for knackered engine covers I'm tempted to just go and buy one of these from Audi.

Intrigued how you managed to end up with a round wheel???????

Exhaust is great too, nice piece of pipework and I bet it's really freed the car up.

Watching with interest! Keep it up.

Still a long way to go before its anything as beautiful as yours!

Yeah the TTS engine cover really makes the engine bay a nice place to admire, especially with the good looks of the Twintake.
Price was a factor me on this. Made more sense to buy a new cover than find and hack up another S3 cover.

Surprisingly the FBSW is an option here in Oz. As I purchased my car used, I wasn't able to tick that option box!

Gave the S3 an immense top to bottom detail today (took me about 8 hours).
One of the steps (which took about half the time), was painting the rusty OEM brake rotors.

The discs before:

Really happy with the final outcome!!

Along with painting of the discs, as I said above, I did a full detail on the car.

Process was as follows:
Wash and Dry
IronX the entire car
Clay barred the car
Poor Boy's SSR2 applied to remove light scratches
CarPro Eraser to remove any of the oils from the polish
Applied a coat of CQuartz

While the wheels were off, I also IronX'd and applied CQuartz to the wheels, really cleaned up the inside, etc.

Clean wheels:

I also installed the H&R spacers which look great.
10mm front and 12mm rear with new/longer bolts.

Before spacers:

Next step is coilovers which will be installed in March (along with HPFP and stage 2+!!!!)

Wow, thats some rust build up on around the hubs, looks so much better for being painted up. Do you live near the sea?

Can you get new S3 plates for the front calipers?

Car looks mint again, Great job.

Thanks Warren.
Don't live overly close to the sea, didn't realise the rust build up was so bad. Not sure why it is like that to be honest.
Now that I have this technique under my belt, I won't be letting it happen again thats for sure.

Might look into getting new S3 plates to really freshen up the discs.
They need a proper clean (my high pressure hose was terrible).

great work poli! really need to do this to my rear hubs when i get the car back! will prob wait till all the salts off the road 1st though! looks brand new again!!

Thanks S3Rye, really makes a difference!
Once you notice that they are rusted, it bothers you every time you clean the car. It's like wearing a nice new suit with dirty socks!!!

Really easy to do, i did a small write up with tips and advice on our local Audi forum if you need.
Highly recommend!

Hi mate, did the the longer bolts come with the spacers? Really like the look of yours, and I need to do my hub as well. Well rusty! Did you just use Hammorite?

Is 10/12mm the size of spacers that everyone goes for? No issues with rubbing etc?

Thanks mate, the spacers have made a MASSIVE difference to the appearance IMO.
Not sure what Hammorite is (don't know that I've seen it here in Australia), but i used a high temperature, brake caliper paint called VHT. Well worth the effort.

I had to order the longer bolts separately.
All up i paid 158 € from orangetuning - bolts were 1.90 € each and came in 2 different sizes for front and back.

10/12mm seemed to be the recommended size and what most on here appear to run.
I did experience one rub when I hit a speed bump at decent speed the other day, boot was full including the 1250kg capacity trolley jack.
Will certainly remove the arch screw before the coilovers are fitted though, hopefully no more rubs after this (even with a full load).

Just saw this thread, great work fella. And one of my favourite colours to.
What coilovers you thinking of getting? Keep up the good work

I used Hammerite on mine and they seem fine

Beautiful car, really love the look of the Engine Bay. I'd love to have that sort of extra detail to mine, just not worth that indepth makeover on my A3. Your S3 is another story though. That extra mile is well worth it.......... Some truly fantastic cars on this forum.

Thanks Ash!
I've bought some Bilstein PSS10's.
They should be here in the next couple of days and I'm trying to make a time with my mechanic to have them fitted!

Appreciate the kind words mate.
If you love the car then it's always worth the effort. Good fun learning and seeing the finished product also.

Hi mate, how you getting on after removing the bumper screw? No more rubbing?

I'm thinking I might be best to go with 10mm (or maybe 11mm) all round, I can't have any rubbing as I drive my car hard. :)

10mm is max I'd go on OEM rims / ride height.

I'd go 8mm rather than 11 as otherwise once you put passengers on board with any luggage it'll be rubbing. Also when the car drops off speed humps it rubs badly. If I had stiffer suspension it may not be so bad. Appreciate some say rubbin is dubbin, but it does my head in!

For sure, totally agree. Cant have rubbing on a 30k+ car!

Dont want to go 8mm as then they won't be hub centric, gonna try to find some 10mm ones...

Thanks!

Haven't removed the arch screw yet.
I've had no rubbing other than the very first one but as i said, i had a massive trolley jack in the boot and I was jumping off a harsh speed bump.

I don't really ever have rear seat passengers these days so rubbing is not a massive issue for me.

I also however, HATE rubbing so will do what i can to eliminate this and will remove the screw once the coilovers are fitted (March 1st).

If i had have read Warren's comments about rubbing with 11mm before ordering my 12mm, then I would have gone with 10mm rear as well.
Too late to change now, perhaps Warren is right and once i put the stiffer coilovers in, there will be no rubbing (with the fender screw removed also).
I'll report back and keep you updated.

Thanks Ash!

Hey Poli, interested in PSS10s myself, did you order from overseas or purchase locally?

Cheers guys, ordered 10mm H&R all round. Will update once fitted.

Hey Poli, interested in PSS10s myself, did you order from overseas or purchase locally?

I actually purchased from OzAudi Eastern, came off AudiNut's 2.0T.
i checked the part numbers with Bilstein and they confirmed that they would fit.

Booked in for March 1st fitment!

Cheers guys, ordered 10mm H&R all round. Will update once fitted.
Good stuff mate, I doubt the extra 2mm will make a huge visible difference so best to play it safe and run 10mm to eliminate the possible rubbing.

HaHa I asked Ray if they would fit an S3 when he first listed the parts and he was unsure if they would.

Kudos to you for doing going the extra mile with the research and getting them at a good price.

More than likely I'll be buying from overseas in the next few months.

haha thanks mate.
yeah did HEAPS of research once he listed and in the end, I guess I have taken an educated punt.
Shouldn't have a problem though. Such a fantastic price for PSS10s that have been fitted for approx 12 months and done ****** al k's!

I wish his brand new Whiteline sways fitted our cars as I would have taken them also.

Good luck with the hunt for your set.
Try orangetuning, they have been so cheap for all of my stuff (and NCRAW's).

Hey Gerard, cars looking fab. You've done some good mods so far which is impressive with prices over here! Always loved the Sprint Blue and with the roof it looks pretty special. Great build thread too.
