hi,

not long had my pre facelift S3 on a W plate, and ive already got the following problems.

just my luck really.

1. both headlight washers have splits in the pipes.

2. found out that i had a brand new turbo on my car, the way i found this out is that the bolts that hold the F_cking thing on came undone. and that one of the bolts haded even been done up properly.

anyway all plugged back in and bolted back together where it should be. but now i have a really high pitched scream when the turbo winds up. (almost like blowing on a bit of grass/reed), im thinking squashed pipe or split somewhere.

mate at work has vag-com so ill plug it back in tonight and update you all.
with some pics.

also need some new brake discs/pads as just noticed that mine look like polos that have been sucked on for about an hour, anyone point me in the direction of some cheap ones.

can anyone help, or even just sympathise with me, as i have spanked all my savings on this car, and as i said before its just my luck that it goes wrong and i havnt even done 500 miles in it yet.

cheers

chris

Dont worry mate, chin up old boy, all will become good again.

yeah lets hope so, i want a car i can be proud of, not like my last car. (which i had since i was 19 which alows it to be sh1t) a saxo.

im going to check all the hoses tonight, and also my mate who has a mk4 golf is going to put on his forge dv, to see if its that.

i just want to clean it, find a bloddy center cap for my rs tt alloys and then take some pictures......

aghhhhhhhhhhh

Mate i know your pain, think my s3 in the first month alone cost me £1000 (To**er of a garages fault partly) and its still costing me now but you cant let it get to you.
At the end of the day we have old cars so its never going to always be plain sailing, you've got to just take the good with the bad and like trick says keep your chin up and soldier on :icon_thumright:

A few words of wisdom i live by: If its got tits or wheels your in trouble!

#2 maybe you need a new gasket on the joint you tightned. might be the noise?

With the brakes have a look for Mintex discs and pads off ebay. They are about £80 and I've had them fitted for about 6 months. They are not a performance upgrade but they are as good as OEM and seem to kick out less dust.

I feel your pain dude. Had mine for about a month now and I'm having to spend quite a bit getting it perfect. Although I must admit I knew about most of the things that needed to be done before I bought it - so luckily I talked the seller down a fair bit. But there are still some unforeseen things that are costing me more than I thought. Will be worth it in the end.

And - you own a s3 now - so you really don't have any reason to be down ;)

guessing turbo would need a new gasket.

Discs and pads can be sourced from GSF or Euro car parts don`t fit cheap crap ones.

well a little update for you guys, (thanks for the interest by the way).....

walked home from work. picked the car up.... drove passed a group of chavs buying drugs who all laughed at the noise my car was making..

stopped at lights. pulled off (not in any way fast at all - didnt top 20 the whole trip) had no boost what so ever, well a little. thoughts of, " the turbo is f_cked" going through my head. :(

pulled into work where VW mad mate was waiting, who again lauged at the noise my fairground ride attraction audi was making.

had a sneaky look around, first off he had the same " the turbo's f_cked" thoughts.

then went, (light bulb moment) hang on, looks like the turbo is correctly bolted onto the cyninder head, but doesnt look like its on the exhaust properly.

was far to hot to delve hands in any deeper. so the plan is to take the "turbo hard pipe" (proper name unknown - if it was up to me id would call it the "no high five's aloud pipe" flat mate just called me a d1ck for even thinking that haha)

take the other gash off then, check all the fixings. then ill through in the little gem about the gasket, so it looks like i know what im talking about. guess it should cost to much. im thinking £5 tops from auto factors.

if after that, my brother from another mother suggested to go to a company in the local area called jtech. ill give them a ring......... any people in the local area are more then welcome to come and throw screwdrivers at it, ill provide all the incesant ******* and whinging.

as far as the brakes go, my flat mate, owns part of a racing firm, who also supply parts and has said that i can get hold of a set of custom made ap racing two piece discs. whole big disc upgrade, calipers, hoses, hubs, pads the lot. for under 700 sheets, so i might just go all out and get them. "if there good enought to stop a 1000bhp RX7 going flat out around castle combe then there good enough for my car" is what he said. i think the disc size would be around 360mm with 4pot calipers.

what do you lot think.?

then next on the list is to change the rear lights for some of those lexus lights that are on ebay.... no really that was a joke. im after some face lift ones, if anyone knows the whereabouts of some. ;)

then, off to AMD for a remap, might go for a stage two kit. (not for a while yet)

sort the wheels out. im really in two minds of what to get...........

i quite like BBS ch's or the 18"'s of a b5 s4 i think. (same looking as the s3 but bigger and flatter). if i could find some that is.

and yes your right, i own one of my dream cars, and i love it. colour i thought i hated until i saw it in the flesh, its amazingly comfy and looks fantastic.

ill get some pics up tomorrow, (forgot tonight) and also some before and after vid's.

any other owners in reading.?

b6 s4 even...... i think they are called avus 3 (iii)....

still waiting for car to cool down to get the pipes off..

wish me luck all.

:)

if the problem i were seeing, happend to be that i needed the gasket, (turbo > manifold?????) anyone got any ideas on how much this would cost to fix......

ie parts and labour.?

cheers

Fix the car problems 1st then spend money on upgrades, £700 on brakes for a car that goes 20mph at present is a waste of money, so hold of major until these things are resolved for peace of mind or could be alot of further money wasted for no real gain.

well a little update for yous.

took off the top pipe, checked all the hoses.no splits, put them all on properly. real snug now. (wernt before)

now i get some pressure from the turbo, which is good and the noise isnt as bad, now sounds like a cowboy saying "yeeeeehaaa"

both my mate and i are thinking that its got to be some form gasket from the cold side, but then again thinking about it i have no idea what im talking about.....

going to buy some gaskets from auto factors in the morning, then hopfully take it some where, where they can fit them and bolt it all on properly....

any rough idea of cost of gaskets, both sides of the turbo, and then labour.

i feel your pain mate and when i was looking at buying one i tested a couple that were like this and one even went so far as to tell me it was a vortex induction kit and there designed to make that noise!? haha walked away from that fast dude, dude was a **** too! anyways if i was you i would take it to a garage that actually know what they are going with VAG's and im sure your the 100th person to walk in with it and they will know straight away!!! Wish you all the best mate! keep us posted

cheers mate,

have taken the car to a company called jtech automotive. they are in reading (well close). he's going to take it apart and put it back together again, as he was looking at it, and saying. thats in the wrong place, that shouldnt be there, there should be a bolt there. etc etc.... and then have another look.

maybe get it back tomorrow or friday....

positive mental attitude.!!!!! :)

Why not just book it into a specialist and let them fix it. You could do soem real damage with a handful of knowledge and keep driving it if something is not right.
You're worried about brakes and new wheels, whihc will cost you £000's and yet wont just book it in with a reputable specialist and get the basics fixed?
If you bought the car with these problems, then you need to get them sorted before you spend too much on mods, and with respect, if you bought it with problems, it's best to let someone that knows what they are on about to fix it!
Where abouts are you located? I am sure someone on here will know of a trusted local specialist repairer that can help you out and not charge the earth either.
Once sorted out, and you feel it is reliable, then throw your wedge at some mods!

Just noted that you sent it to Jtech. It's a start but have not heard of them to be fair.
When you say they are taking it apart and rebuilding it, what bit is leaking exactly? Is it turbo to exhaust? If so, it should be pretty straightforward.

hi, just as a note, i wasnt planing on buying all the new bits for the car just yet, it was just some thoughts....... im wouldnt dream of spanking loads of money on things i didnt need just yet without fixing it first.

and i have booked it into a specialist.

jtech specialise in VAG and also fitting 1.8t conversions.

the guy i spoke to knew his stuff, it was off the back of a recomendation from the guys over at uk-mkivs.net.

what he said he is going to do, is take all the pipes and turbo off run them as they should be run. then try and diagnose the fault from there.

update for everyone.

turbos gone, need to get a new one........ anyone know of where i can get a cheepish ko4.

cheers

a very ****** off chris.

Time for an upgrade mate, go hybrid, it's only the wrong side of £1k, but the results will be worth it! :)

How knackered is the current Turbo, get it reconned maybe cheaper and more cost effective than buying a used unit.

hi jojo,

just been ringing around a few local tuners, one of the guys has come back and said that they can supply and fit a unit from garret, they do a ko4 unit aparently, would need a custom code remap to make it work properly. waiting for a qoute...

trust me, i have next to no money so, im a little bit stuck on what to do... :( vary said day in the house of wagon.

garret upgrade has always been reported as very wise choice, you'll have alot of fun with that for sure along with custom map, ****** thing will go like **** of a shovel after a curry & 10 cobra's, lol

just been speaking to trading standards, they had advised me to write the garage a letter. claiming a repair........ below is part of the letter,

  • the turbo charger has broken and requires replacing
  • the headlight washers have a leak which causes the system to drain of water which requires repair
  • there is a fault with the ABS
Upon inspection of the vehicle the turbo charger has had previous work that is sub satisfactory; there is also a water leak from the front of the vehicle, believed to come from the headlight washers. These are a legal requirement due to the vehicle having HID lights as standard.
there is also a fault with the ABS, this has been found by diagnostics checks and also shows on the vehicles dash

I wish to claim a repair at cost to you.

Please respond to my complaint within 14 days from receipt of this letter.
Yours faithfully

chris partington

what do you guys think.?

right well a little update again.....

going to send the car off to storm developments in reading.

been qouted £1500 inc vat all in for the following.

brand new garrett turbo (all seals, bolts etc) with 2 year warranty.

to change the "long metal oil feed pipe" that sometimes need changing when the turbo comes off.... (£35 from audi maybe)

oil change inc all audi parts (filter, oil, audi spark plugs, and air filter)

a custom code remap, inc full diog checking through out.

all for £1500 inc vat.

what do you guys think.....

going away for work to dubai next week, miles at storm said they are happy to let me leave the car with them and pick it up and pay when i get back. (two weeks).

so um yeah, any thoughts???

cheers

Sounds like a good deal, Do you not think you should wait for a response from the garage? anyway goodluck and hope you get it all sorted mate

hey,

i thought id update anyone who is interested.

***** long post sorry *******

got the car back from storm, and i have to say they have done some amazing work on my poorly S3.

miles and his team there are something else, i was away in dubai for work, while he had the car, he was dealing with a mate of mine from work who gave me updates. did nothing without asking me, and also gave me options and his honest opinions on everything.

there is a big list of what i needed to get done. (not got the invoice with me....doh)

he found out why the turbo went, turned out to be fitted quite recently (recon'd unit) the muppets who ever did the work, had bodged so much trying to get it on.

the oil feed pipe from the turbo was turned back on its self so had a massive kink in it thus starving the turbo of oil. hence why it sh1t its inerds out.

the pipe connecting to the oil sump had be stuck on with silicon which had fallen through the joint and gummed up the basket.

the turbo was also held onto the manifold by stud bolts, had these replaced with the proper ones.

planned to get the car remapped, but miles had found that someone had already remapped it, when he tried to take there software off and put on the CC map, it crashed the ECU, so currently i have there spare unit in my car. (mine has been sent off to be fixed - £20, will refit and remap for free)

quoted cost was £1500 actual cost was £1950, miles took off all the extra's and it came out to the same price as i was quoted so i know that i wasnt being scammed. they also did alot of work FOC, included only charging me the original labour costs.

and they even cleaned it, i had forgotten what it looked like, any way.

drove the car off site. got 50 yards down the road and a horrible noise started happening. was ready to start crying, turned the car around, back to STORM, and miles got it streight back on the lift to check it out. drivers side wheel bearing was 3 minutes for welding it's self up.

so i said a couple of choice swear words over one of dubai duty free's finest. miles got me a quote for the wheel bearing, and said that he could have it done as soon as the part came in.

got a phone call to say all done, he took it out for a drive to make sure nothing else went wrong.

picked it up. £176.00 inc labour.

have to run the turbo in for the next 300 miles and then back to STORM for another oil change.

but even driving it slowly, the car is rattle free, smooth and very nice. im in love like i should have been when i picked it up.

other things that still need to be done are;

replace front and rear brake pads.
replace front brake discs (very thin)
change speed sensor behind the glovebox (anyone know of how much i can get one of these for?)
replace rocker cover gasket.
replace ARB bushes all round as cracked/cracking (any idea of cost.?)
find centre cap for RSTT reps. (anyone got one laying around ;) )

fuel gauge is playing up a little (showing full tank when i know its not) pretty sure it will be the fuel sender in the tank, stuck/sticking. nothing some WD40 wouldnt fix.

also forgot to mention, they fitted a new aux belt FOC parts and labour as they said it looked like it should be replaced.

well chuffed.

Wagon, I must say your humour has had me in stitches! :jester:

I feel for you about your car though,I only bought my S3 a month ago and I can imagine all you want to do is drive it.At least now the works been done it will restore a bit of faith in the motor.

ha ha cheers mate,

im sure all faith will be restored in her upstairs once ive had the brakes done. as its seat of your pants time when it comes to slowing down, even at very low speeds, i wonder if its possible to actually put your foot thru the floor.?

what did you end up getting morgan.?

I'm in the process of uploading a few pictures into Photobucket so give me 10 minutes and they will be in the S3 pictures thread. :)

But I got a 2002 S3, in black,with black napa leather,Bose,sunroof,unmarked wheels and only 40k on the clock :)

If you bought it from a garage, you have a chance of getting some of that cash back, obviously you should have taken it back to them, and they will say that, but you should be able to say that you did not trust them, so took it to an independent mechanic.

Not sure of the legal mumbo jumbo, but give them a call, and tell them you are sending them the invoice.

Best case, they pay, worst case they don't, but you may settle somewhere and at least get some of it back, perhaps the cost of parts? Worth a shot!!

Morgan - What that set you back? Suprised you found something with such low milage, especially as it is teh fastest colour around :undwech:

I paid £9300 Bruce and it's imaculate :)
It's off to Audi tomorrow for the cambelt, tensioners, waterpump and a service.
Then when I've got some money I'll be looking into a remap.

Nice price at that mileage. Just had my service last week, Haldex, Cambelt, the whole 9 yards [plus a very expensive fog light], then MOT the next day where I got brakes replaced [disks+pads, with standard unfortunately, as my MOT was due that day, so no time to shop around]

Had 4rings do the service, and MOT at Audi, dropped a lot of cash in two days [£1112] but she sounds so good now, and even runs a couple of degrees cooler, and some little noices that I could hear under teh bonnet have gone, so VERY happy with 4rings, woudl recomend them any day.

If you are near London, give 4rings a call!!
