I'm about to take delivery of an A4. The largest SD card it can handle according to the MMI user manual is 128 GB. That is fine for all my music (about 8,500 tracks). Equally the 10GB Jukebox will be fine for 1,200 or so tracks. On looking at the MMI manual, it says this:

    "Filling the jukebox
    • Press the MEDIA button. Press the left control button repeatedly until the source overview link► is displayed. Select one of the following sources to copy to the jukebox: SD card, CD-ROM*, DVD-ROM*, USB storage device*.
    • Important: The media centre (e.g. tracks, albums) must be open.
    • To select an entry: Select an entry from the media centre. Select: right control button > Copy to jukebox > This entry or Entire list.
Important: The playlist must be open. Refer to link►.
    • To choose a track: Select the track currently being played. Select: right control button > Copy to jukebox > This track/Entire album or This artist."
Surely that doesn't mean that before I can play direct from the SD card or load 10GB up onto the jukebox I have to open every last track out of the folders (artists, albums, playlists etc.) that they are currently in on the SD card? If anyone plays music in this way via one of the SD card slots and/or the Jukebox i'd welcome some real world feedback.

I know I could just play it all from an iPod or my phone, but since it has the SD card functionality I thought that would be the simplest method of playing music. I've gone for the Bang and Olufsen and so music is a big deal for me in the car.

I don't have the B&O but I just select a track or an Album on the SD card and it plays. I don't have any playlists set up.
I also have a classic iPod but I find the SD card is quicker to access than the iPod.

Thanks for that. It may be that the stipulation that the item to be copied to the Jukebox must be open, refers only to copying media to the Jukebox, rather than playing direct from the SD card itself.

My mmi system, technology pack with a hard drive, the brochures states cards up to 2tb's. The only limitation being the number of files per directory.
Currently the largest cards are sdxc of 512gb, though owners have used 256gb versions in their mmi systems successfully..

I got the 128GB limit from the Feb 16 version of the MMI manual available online. I'm pleased to hear that the current models have larger capacity, thanks.

Sorry should have made it clearer but this is the mmi system in my 2014 A3 but I don't see why the current A4 won't support sd csrds of the same size...

B9 manual (p291) says max 128Gb cards. I guess bigger ones might work anyway but it isn't guaranteed.

It does, which is kinda confusing when the A3 can take up to 2tb's using the same system. Just to clarify, I am referring to the technology pack not the SD navigation versions which the manual might be referring to?

Yeah, it doesn't specify in the manual which version (its just a table at the end of the media chapter that lists all the card and file formats that the MMI can accept) so I assumed it applied to both. Will have another read later and see if anything in the actual chapter text refers to the tech pack having a different limit.

I couldn't see anything and the brochure makes no reference to which size od sd card the technology pack takes, however the a3 does. So one and another Audi conundrum...

The Jukebox is just internal storage, no need to use it if you dont wish to. Before I really thought about options, I went out and got SD cards for the glove box ports then realised I could plug a portable 3.5' Hard drive into one of the USB ports. If you aren't struggling for room in your centre console, it makes it all quite easy.

That's a good idea. I've got an old 160GB classic iPod which I currently use and it does the job very well, although it's beginning to show its age. I had thought about using a USB Memory Stick, but for the moment I've bought a 128GB SD card. I'll put 1200 or so songs into the Jukebox and I'll use the SD card for the full library and various playlists. I'll see how I get on and also see how good Apple CarPlay is in practice, because I've also got all my music on my iPhone. Historically when I've used my iPhone to play music over Bluetooth in a car the quality hasn't been as good as the hard wired iPod Classic via USB. My iPhone will be hard connected to a USB port but I don't know yet whether Apple CarPlay operates via that hard connection or via Bluetooth. Hence me sticking everything on an SD card as an initial option. All these storage options are so cheap nowadays that there's really nothing to lose.

When you use CarPlay it turns Bluetooth off and everything is done via USB. So in theory it should be quicker.

    reviving an old thread!
    1. can this display album art if you have it embedded on the mp3, like it does when a CD is played?
    2. does it sort them out in different orders, album, genre, artist etc?
@cuke2u can you confirm you can use 256GB in the B9? as by the looks of things you had the A3 when you posted on this thread?

My music is always in mp3 form and it displays the album art ok. It seems that the A3 system might be different from the A4 is terms of the size of SD card that can be used, I have only tried 64gb but perhaps someone else has tried a higher sized one...

That's all I do, just note that there is a limit of the number of files the MMI can see...

Class 10 here. This is what's in my MMI - http://amzn.eu/9Elize9

You could probably get away with slower but if you regularly update it, the write speed helps.

That’s not a bad price. Come to think of it I should have a class 10 in my camera can’t remember when I used that last.
