Facelift Pirelli Tyre Defects - Response

Yep you’ve got the issue alright.

What will you go for?

Could you take the time to contact Pirelli and Audi for us all please?

Ok will look at getting in contact.

Is there a issue number or something that we can all quote i.e generic fault code ...?

I contacted Audi NZ for me and just emailed an enquiry on the global Pirelli website

Thank you!

Nope nothing at all, will all have to treat this as an individual case. I’m between work and hospital at the moment with my other half but once I’m on rest days I will be calling Audi CS.

Are there any of you having this issue running a square 255/ setup? With 8.5j

I don’t think any of us are, as far as I’m aware it’s very very close to run 255 8.5j on the rear. I can recall lots have asked but nobody I can think of has actually done it.

I would expect that the rears would still wear normally and the front would wear badly.

Checked my tyres when I swapped over to winters yesterday and all 4 are wearing evenly.

Had 11k out of the fronts and there’s still 4-5mm left. Had at least 20k from the rears and still have at least 3mm left.

Do you have magride?

I’m just wondering if this is only affecting people with mag ride

Is it a Sportback or Saloon thing?
Only done 3800 miles in mine so far (in almost a year) :whistle2: so looking forward to knackered tyres

Affected both so far, I’m just baffled how quite a few don’t have it. Yet it seems to be the number of people who has it outweighs the number that don’t.

That's a good question.

Numerous sportback owners on here with the inside wearing issue (after +7k miles on mine) on fronts only with staggered set up 255 R02s 19s, some with spacers some without, and some with mag ride some not.

What's the commonality here..... The dam Pirelli R02.

Any saloon owners ??

@Callump01 is the only saloon owner with the square setup as far as I’m aware.

I have a saloon with square setup. My fronts showed signs of inner edge wear at 8k miles, I put up a few pics on here. Swapped front to rear to even out wear and upped the pressure to the max setting. I am now doing 90 miles a day so need to get good life from the tyres. The increased pressures seems to be helping.

Fingers crossed it does, mine have gone up 3psi each but only time will tell.

I haven’t gone for max I’ve gone for half way. You risk making the car floaty running them at max if you don’t have the weight on to support it.

My car was in at a well-respected suspension specialist getting coil overs fitted and set up yesterday. They have a great reputation for being suspension and geometry experts and set up rally cars as well as road cars.

When I went to collect my car yesterday afternoon they made a point of going through a few things yesterday. Said that most Audis have very aggressive castor settings and there’s no adjustment on these. He said that full lock should always be avoided as the inner edge of the tyre will scrub on the ground and result in premature tyre wear. He turned the wheel right out and demonstrated this. Apparently the upside is that if you get a blow-out at high speed the car will remain stable and controllable.

Just thought I’d share this as i wonder if it might be a factor here.

Yeah I was worried about that but it seems to be ok so far.

Thanks for that! Yes Pirelli showed me that on my car, but it’s a bad design if they will definitely wear like this. I can’t avoid full locks, I have to make 2/3 every time I get in and out of the garage.

Is it me?
Why can't i see the tyre pressures on that sticker for 255 tyres...?

Here is the info I used although it’s for 245/. If I’m correct its from a S4. I used these on my A4 b9 190ps 2.0 tdi for my 255/35/19 setup. I asked around on the forum because I too could not find it a while back.

Keep in mind 255/ isn’t standard on any A4 B9. It was the b8 that used 255/ with the same pressure as the pic here. The b9 is also circa 120kgs lighter than the b8.

Exactly the same problem here in Australia.
RS3 Sportback 2018
Emmotion Springs
034 Motorsport top mounts increase neg camber by 1.4
Koya 19x8.5 et33 front and rear
034 Motorsport Subframe locking kit( no more camber changes mid corner or low speed clunking noises from subframe shifting under load)
Stock Pirelli’s
5000kms in total on the clock from new!
Front camber set at -2.4 front toe 1.5mm toe in
Rear camber 2.0 rear toe in 1.2mm
Set up by my race guy so I know it’s been spot on!

Inside edge of left front wheel chewed itself and deflated on highway at 120kmh. We have stupid low speed limits here in Nanny state Australia.
Wish I’d seen this thread before....
Replaced both fronts now with Conti 5Ps 255/30/19 Big improvement, seem to be wearing normally so far!

Audi didn’t want to know......

Wow thats bad. I complained to Audi NZ, told me to come in for an alignment, will be trying new tires as soon as I am done with this new set. Will be interested to see how the Contis fair and if you have any traction control issues.

Thanks for the input!

That’s the shortest lifespan yet, but in fairness yours is quite heavily modified.

I’m 3500 miles into my next set of Pirelli and it’s quite obvious now that they are wearing badly.

It’s definitely a problem with the tyres.....

I wont be replacing my Pirellis like for like.
Beleive I'll try either Conti 5p or MPS4's.

What i will ensure is they are the same sizes i.e 255 19 30 and not 245's.

Do you know if the Conti 5P or MPS4’s are any better, or just getting away from the Pirelli’s due to this obvious issue with them.

Pirelli say it is not and the tyres are manufactured within specs, hardness of the rubber is all correct. It can’t be the tyres because if the car was set up right they would wear flat.

Not personally as I've never tried them

Its only from reading all the replies on here, those two tryes seem to stand out.
Plus price wise they are all pretty similar.

One things for sure Audi and Pirelli are going to do ****** all about this.

Everything seems to point to the tyres being the issue.
Well I will find out by changing from the R02s.

But i will match the width and profile to hopefully ensure no TC issues.

My Conti 5ps are still R02.
The RO2 refers to the fact that the tyres are within spec rolling diameter range so not to put strain on the transfer case/Quattro system.
BMW use a similar rating on tyres but they use a star.

I’ve contacted What Car who have acknowledged my email as well as the DVSA who are assigning an engineer to contact me currently, I’m hoping this will get somewhere.

Well done, this needs sorting. I'd be fuming if I were you guys. For the cost and the safety issues. Clearly something is very wrong. Even if it is the tyres (personally I don't think it is the tyres fault) then Audi who supply the car with these tyres from new should share some responsibility.

Probably the biggest hope is with the DVSA, they actually use an example description of a defect in their guide they’ve sent as “a defective tyre that may suddenly fail”. In my eyes these tyres come under that category, unless they go down the route of every driver should inspect their vehicle prior to use but that’s on the defence side of things so I’m hoping for the best.

I’ve brought 4 brand new pzero tyres a few 1000 miles ago costing over £1000 and both my front tyres have done this !

Just responded to your PM mate.

Just wondering, if you do have a PFL and you’ve just fitted RO2 tyres and they’re doing this, that is VERY interesting and indeed points to the tyres!
