Pan roof replacement

Hey,

so I’m having my pan roof replaced by Audi under warranty. It has been creaking going over bumps. They had a small look at it when it was in for something else and they told me it’ll be a full weeks job to pull the headlining down, rip the glass out etc. It made things worse at first (it was rattling as well as creaking) until i got it home and adjusted the 2 screws at the back of the glass. Creaking didn’t stop.

They are now replacing the cassette that it goes in. Ive had a brief look at the repair manual and ive seen it requires some of the plastic housing to be cut away with an angle grinder. They rang me today and said they didn’t realise it needed so much to be removed and dont want to do the work themselves and have now advised they are going to get a specialist bodyshop in to do the cutting for them. I feel really nervous about letting this go ahead and can’t believe that the cassette is not a properly serviceable/replaceable part.

I’m scared they may damage something, especially my paintwork or make a cut where there is not supposed to be one or something like that.

has anyone ever had a replacement cassette? I’m half tempted to tell them to put it back together and I’ll deal with the creaking rather than go through this!

Oh dear,....

A friend of mine had this attempted by a Welsh Audi dealer, made a right mess of it, so much so he ended up rejecting the car back to the original dealer.

They ripped all the roof interior out along with most of the interior, and marked the leather seats crawling all over them, he showed me the pictures of it and it was a tight mess.

Yes they do have to grind the cassette out.

I believe they’ve removed the whole interior to avoid any damage...seats and centre console etc.

i dont know what would happen if they make a mess of it...it’s not as if I can reject it because I got it from an indie dealer, not a main dealer (and not the one who’s doing the work)....apprehensive at best!

I've seen them done at my work on A3's and Golf's, if done by someone who knows what they're doing they're awkward but certainly doable, The Grinder is a specific Angled grinder which is a Vibrating blade rather then a traditional angle grinder which the dealer likely doesn't have as it slots around the side of the class frame, The grinder however is only to cut through the Bond that holds the cassette in, it should never go near any Metalwork!

However if you know what you're doing this isn't needed! It can be done with Windscreen removal wire which will make next to no mess when used correctly. If you would rather this route you could ask the dealer to use an Auto Glass company as they will certainly have more experience in this job (We used a local one to us and it was out in 30 mins no issues however we had removed Headlining ect previously for them).

Although i must say i find it a little worrying that Audi didn't realise quite what was involved however if they're handing it over to someone competent then i'd go for it, just ask if you can see the car as it sits and Photograph all of the interior (Especially All the upper pillar trims and aroud the Sun visors/Overhead console light area) to prove there was no damage before the work and you're golden!

Sorry to hear they damaged your car!

As with most things it depends on the Tech doing it, some definitely care more then others, A3's are not a difficult platform to work on so it's a shame to see they've managed to do this.

Did they sort it all for you?

This is a massive job and I would have precisely zero confidence in any dealer completing it which did not result in damage created elsewhere.
The detail of care taken by dealers with customers cars even when in for routine things like servicing is at best below the standard one would expect.
If this was my car I would be so reluctant to have it done that I would just rather put up with the creaking noise.

I agree that a top notch body shop would be the way to go with this repair. My Audi dealership will not touch any window repairs apart from minor adjustments and send it to probably the best body repair shop in Vancouver. They are factory authorised to fix Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Maserati, Lamborghini, etc and all German makes
