At exactly 144444 miles today my car started playing up.
Pulling out of a junction and hitting 2k rpm, the car felt like it hit a wall.
Rev counter bounced down and back up, car back fired and ESC lights lit up!

Got to my destination a mile away and parked up and car was idling at 1200rpm despite being up to temp.

Revved the engine to replicate the fault and in neutral at 4k it does the same.

No idea if it will get me home tomorrow (165 miles) or if I should even attempt it.

Anybody know what sensor it refers to? If you have a part number that would also be helpful.

16705/P0321/000801 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms
  • Engine shuts off
  • Engine doesn't start
  • Speedometer inoperative
  • Glow Plug Indicator Lamp (K29) flashes
Possible Causes
  • Engine Speed Sensor (G28) loose
  • Engine Speed Sensor (G28) faulty
Possible Solutions
  • Check Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
Special Notes
  • The Engine Speed Sensor (G28) is also used as a reference sensor for the crankshaft position and correlates with the Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1 (G40) and Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 2 (G163).
    • When an engine will not start due to mechanical (spark/fuel/compression/timing) related issues it is not uncommon to set a false G28 fault codes due to extended cranking with a no-start condition.
  • When found in a VW Golf/Jetta (1J/9M) or Audi A3 (8L) with 1.9l TDI-PD (AXR), check TPI 2007067 which explains issues with electro magnetic interference. A modification to the wiring will fix this problem, extensive details can be found in the named TPI. Even though this TPI was originally released for VW Golf/Jetta (1J/9M), a customer of ours came across the same issue on an Audi A3 (8L).
  • When found in a 2004 VW Golf, Jetta, or New Beetle with 1.9l TDI-PD (BEW), check for TSB 2010461 (01-07-45 formerly 97-05-03) or 201463 (01-07-44 formerly 97-05-04) calling for a flash update to the ECU and a secondary ground installation.
  • General note for any engine type: Check the wiring to/from the sensor and engine control module to rule out harness and module damage due to engine oil or coolant from a failed sensor or tensioner. This is an example from a 2012 Tiguan with Coolant in the ECM which resulted in G28 DTCs in addition to intermittent stalling.

so checked on elsawin, and theres no guide on removing it oddly, but there is mention of it under the crankshaft exploded view (see item 5 on the attached pdf bhzcrankshaft).
also shown is the locations and fitting arrangement under item 12 in attached pdf bhzlocations (scroll down the pdf for more info.

so vag call it an engine speed sender, aka crank position sensor. in etka its called an impulse sender.
its located on the flywheel/gearbox side.

part number you need is 06A906433G . genuine price is £155.
had a quick look on autodoc, and of the brands available, i would only use bosch, ngk, hella, delphi, in that order. prices range from about £16 to £45. i would not under any circumstance pay £155 for one, when in all likelihood, bosch made the genuine part and is available for £45.

that being said, i know you like genuine parts, so i found one on ebay
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Engine-i...39c230a:g:bucAAOSwjLZeQFah&LH_ItemCondition=3

its the L suffix, which is superceeded by G, but G became available in 2012, so the original on your car is an L or older, so its no issue.

opieoils have the bosch branded one for £50
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bosch-Cr...327450&hash=item283b74ef28:g:lHoAAOSw35lZeahy

the green spark plug company have the ngk for £28

Mate, that's amazing, thanks so much for all the info!

So, can I safely drive like miss daisy without causing damage over 165 miles, or do I need a local mechanic to get to work on it ASAP?

Not sure if the answer changes, but you're looking for crankshaft sensor.
Do you have an eml light on the dash?
Not permanently, but it has flashed on during the rev fluctuations.
Car is with a local mechanic now, didn't want to risk it over such a long journey, even it would be steady motorway mileage.

Can understand that.
If it's not a loose wire or something, and they change the sensor with a decent one, better to do it now than later.

Car got dropped off at 8am this morning.
Car left on drive, keys dropped through letterbox as requested. No discussion with 'mechanic' which worried me.

Provided a video of the fault as it happens when engine is hot, and car was cold when dropped off (less than a mile away).
Provided fault code log.
Provided OEM part number.
Provided Motaquip part number.

Got a call at 11am saying he thought it was the dashcam fuse so he changed it and started the car and it started first time and no EML.
I never had issues with starting it or EML, advised him that the problem was when the car was up to temp.

Called him back at 3.30pm for an update. He'd got the car up to temp, revved it and had the same problem. Called his mate who does VW engines and he wouldn't commit to it being that sensor.

So instead of calling me to check I wanted it fitting, he did nothing!
I advised him I was happy to take the risk of it being fitted and not being the problem, and he said he'd try and get the part fitted tomorrow!
He'd already been told it needed to be done today, so he said he'd try and get the part and call me back in 20 mins.

Hour later and I'm still waiting and no wiser, with a drive in the dark to look forward to.
Furious!

Not my car, but if it were mine I'd drive it home.
Gives you chance to order the part, not get scalped on it, take it to someone you trust.

Eurocarparts don't sell the part. My guess, they couldn't get hold of the part so didn't do it.
What mechanic have you heard of that won't change a part, even when the customer insists on it.

It's only happening at a certain rev range. The code says implausible signal, I take that to mean its getting a reading that is out of spec, it doesn't happen at low rpm and the car starts.
Id baby it home.

Part has been ordered back home already, but I walked around to get the car back and he was actually working on it so I left him to it.
Would have been nice to have an update, but at least it's finally being worked on.
Going to be a long day for me.

Ah OK so we don't yet have a conclusion with this mechanic yet?

Which brand did you order home? Assuming it'll be sent back if it gets sorted today

It's from motaquip, not sure on brand.
I'm happy to source a better one at a later date if needed, as long as I'm mobile for a few weeks with work and a house purchase.
Yes, part can be returned if needed.

As for the mechanic, he called at 5pm to tell he he had removed the old part and was driving to St Helens (20 mins away) to collect the part!
No idea who is open to sell parts at almost 5.30pm or why he'd remove an old part before getting a new one?!
Apparently I'll have the car back in a couple of hours. I would be home by now if he started on the car 9 hours ago! Absolutely no point in getting the car to him at 8am as I'd finished work before he'd even ordered the part. Absolute joke.

Got the car back at 7.30pm.
Car hadn't been test driven or brought up to temp, but I was taking the car anyway so I loaded it up with my stuff and drove home.
Thankfully, it drove perfectly all the way home and doesn't cough and fart at 4k rpm.
It's been a long day.

That’s a relief!

Another option was to start the drive and called for break down. We pay for a reason

Car is feeling very sluggish today, was unable to give it a spirited drive last night due to torrential rain all the way home.
Roads are a bit drier today and it's quite noticeable how lethargic it feels.
Having just done a Fault scan I have found:

P0321 - Ign./Distributor Eng.Speed Inp.Circ. Range/Performance Implausible signal
Intermittent
P3266 - Bank 1, sensor 1 Internal resistance implausible Implausible signal
Intermittent
P0100 - Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor "A" Circuit No signal/communication
Intermittent

At the time of the issue I disconnected the MAF to see if it made a difference, but it didn't. I have a feeling these were old codes that the mechanic failed to clear down, so I have cleared them and reset the TB in the hope it finds some of that lost power.

This photo was taken by my passenger before anyone accuses me of driving while on the phone.
Revs are too high for speed and its got no guts at overtaking speed. Wish I'd limped it home and bought a genuine sensor now as I've just found out that the mechanic used a sensor from ECP.

Couldn't find one on ecp when I looked, must be getting sloppy.
What brand was used as ecp do sell good stuff it's just that alot of the stuff they sell is *****.

Any codes since you cleared them?

No idea what brand, but we suspect its 'Starline'. I couldn't find one either, but my GF tracked it down when we found out where it was purchased.
OEM sensor is arriving tomorrow and should be fitted if the weather allows.

Will fault scan in a minute.

Gutted at how much hassle and expense this has created, I'm trying to save for a house deposit.

I see it now. They have it under engine management sensors.

Could be a starline, haas or hella. The hella is the only oem brand there and the only I'd use out of those.

Sadly, I wasn't contacted and given the option of what part or how much I wanted to spend.
I'm sure he was trying his best to keep the costs down as most customers would prefer the cheapest bill possible, but there are people like me who prefer to get OEM or decent branded parts fitted and would gladly pay more for the peace of mind.
Now the costs have doubled for me!
