Hi guys, looking for a bit of help.

Having a bit of a starting issue, it's takes a while to crank over. More so once the engine is warm, I have to dab on the throttle to get it going.

I've been through the forums and narrowed it down to a few things and a specialist has "ruled out" the starter motor. So I'm left with the battery and the crankshaft sensor.

I'm not sure if the battery has ever been changed could anyone clarify what battery Audi used straight out the factory? Currently got this in it.

Any ideas?

Cheers!

I went for a Bosch out of euro car parts. Think this code still works 'kiaforum' for a discount

I've been looking at Euro car parts, they have a few discount codes going. Will give it a try though, thanks!

Are Bosch and varta similar in performance?

Not sure but iv'e always brought Bosch. They seem to last forever

Im having a similar issue, my Audi/vw garage said my battery seemed a bit low on Friday so went to Halfords yesterday for a 2nd battery test who said its fine!
So bit unsure whether to buy one or not!

Yeah, I've looked over the forums and going to do the cheap potential fixes first, replacing the battery as it's 8yrs old now could be a good start. The batteries on ECP etc have the specs on so can see which ones have higher cold cranking amps etc over the OE battery. Fingers crossed!

Haven't got a radio code though....

After very costly investigations with my poor starting, (battery, crank sensor, flywheel, starter, alternator plus other stuff lol) was found to be a bad earthing point. For the cost of it I would check them all, think there is only about 4/5 and drill new ones if they are pants

The Varta silver for my motor is 77Ah/760CCA compared to Bosch 70Ah/720CCA

The varta is the stronger battery, best place I found online is Tanya batteries, real good price and top service

Bosch batteries are made by varta. The varta batteries tend to be cheaper though for the same spec. I believe the bosch s5 range is the same as a varta silver. Instead of ECP look at car parts for less, they are the on line version of ECP and tend to be cheaper.

Another vote for the Varta Silver battery from me and for buying it from Tayna, there's quite a few other S3/A3's on here running it as well with no problems.

Can you elaborate a bit more on the bad earthing issue and what was specifically done to fix it please? I've also spent hundreds trying to fix an intermittent start-up issue, tried all of the above bar the flywheel, alternator and earthing but replaced a few other bits like the camshaft sensor as well.

Thanks.

Garage said as a precaution they checked the chassis points that you bolt onto, one of the earthing crimps was nearly broken off so they re-crimped the cable and drilled and bolted a new point on, and undid all others and cleaned them up with wire brushes. I had starting probs for months, so far it's been 3 weeks since and started on the button first time, every time. Not exactly sure where it was but it's cheaper to get that checked first before you replace the entire starting system like I did

I know for next time now

well I've just stopped by the local garage on the way back from work, the plugged it in and no code or anything have come up. sods law it started up better than it has done but still took a second or so to kick in.

Just to clear something up how long does it usually take for the car to start up from turning the key? Not sure if I am being extra picky or paranoid.

:whistle2:

Mine got worse and worse, it got to the stage it would take 10-15 seconds of horrible noises before I got any life. Have a google where all the earth points are and check them out, cheapest thing to do, wish I'd of done this first

If you have a dingbro or euro car parts near you they have a testing device that will let u know if its goosed. Mine died last week, original battery, was left in morrisons car park for 36hrs, was doing my head in.

Mine only seems to be after being sat overnight or all day at work, if I get home then turn off and on again it'll be fine, so guessing its not the starting motor more the battery!

That does sound to me like a battery issue more than a starter motor.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but since it's a similar issue I thought I'd try get some help.

My car has developed a starting problem. The worst being yesterday, the engine was hot and I stopped to pick up some food. Came back to the car approx 10 mins later and when switching the engine on its almost like the engine starts then dies (for about a split second) then starts itself up but with a harsh judder. This only happens sometimes but when it does happen it's always on a hot engine.

The car is an A3 1.9tdi and everything is stock apart from a remap.

Any ideas guys?

I know you probably are but are you giving the car time to set before turning to ignition? (allowing lights to go off and glowplugs to warm)

i saw something on another thread when i was researching these problems and it may be something like a "hot patch start" not sure if it was called that exactly but a member explained it.

he was more definite with diesel engines and wasn't sure on petrol, he said apparently when the engine is cold it sprays some fuel in to kick start the engine. when the engine is warm it doesn't call for the fuel to give it a kick start, which potentially could cause this issue?

Another thing could be check the sensors haven't come loose or anything.

Im sure with a remap and someone with the knowledge may be able to fix this.

I think the person talking about the hot patch fix was me lol I've already had it done but no avail. And yes i always wait for the lights to all go off before turning the car on, but as I said sometimes on a hot engine it starts fine so I'm a little confused.

Stop faffing around and buy a new battery, it's at the end of it's life anyway. Going to let you down when the cold nights arrive anyway .
Do a click and collect at ecp with a discount code and it will be cheaper than parts for less
You don't need a radio code if you have audi OE, the ecu recognises it when the 12volts is up and running again.

I was reading a thread on VW Audi Forum about the same thing. Someone recently has posted a 'fix' to this hot start issue.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131899862316

No ones tried it as of yet so please don't buy this item thinking its a fix lol I'm just sharing what I've read. But other than that they've said the problem is the starter motor. They've also said A new battery will only temporarily fix the problem.

little update, went in for the revo stage 1 map yesterday, Alex at AKS Tuning found the car didn't feel quite right. He found the timing was out, and a pin in one of the pulleys had snapped and the pulley had spun a bit. He had also noticed the starting problem it had whilst test running the car etc. Anyway he replaced the necessary bits and got the car back together up and running again and mentioned its starting better.

So far the car starts spot on evey time, hasn't been too long though will see how it goes but its a positive step at the moment!

Finger crossed!

PS Big all round recommendations for AKS Tuning, its rare to have a place that cares for your car as much as you do!

Hey max, so have you replaced the battery and if so did that fix the issue?

Hi bud, I didn't replace the battery as it checked out ok.

After the car was mapped and the timing was corrected by AKS Tuning it starts perfect. It's only been a week but I'm guessing the timing is where the issue was coming from.
