I've been thinking about it for well over a year now and just ordered a twin channel tuning box from Tdi-tuning for my a4 b8 3.0tdi! I'm really hoping I won't regret this purchase!

Hi Freddie, can I be cheeky and ask how much? Thinking of one for mine.

Are these tuning boxes safe to use on automatics? (sorry if it's a stupid question) Are they better than getting the car re-mapped?

It was £333 including next day delivery. As I said I've been thinking about it for a while and the box for the last year has been £360 but has 10% discount on Black Friday weekend (not inc delivery) so I thought I would go for it! They claim it will go from 237bhp to 299bhp and from 500nm to 595nm! That's a nice increase.

I hope it's better advertised than DTUK. I bought the economy one. When I rang up to ask advice about it, they told me it's not actually economy. They just say that on the website for insurance purposes. Which is lovely.
They then ignored my email.

Looking forward to your thoughts once you get it installed. Stuck between DTUK, Racehip DE or TDI Tuning at the minute.

I too will be keen to hear your thoughts. Been thinking into these for while. Would love to go the full dpf delete route but it's just not worth the risk nowerdays

I have a DTUK on my 3.0 TDI. It's good.

Ave 36 mpg over 3k from new but I drive like a teenager.

Only got it fitted properly today and have only done one journey so far. The box was much harder to fit than I thought as the fuel rail clip is upside down and not much room to get your hand behind to release the clip. The boost plug was even harder to get to. Ideally you need to remove the passenger side wheel arch to get to it although I just managed to get a flat bladed screwdriver to release the clip. I current have the jumpers set to max power. It doesn't pick up as early as I thought although it's better than before. Will have to drive it more and switch maps to find one I like the most! Will keep you guys posted.

Tuning boxes are OK, Ran one on my car for a while before it was remapped. a mapped car is a completely different ball game though.
The problem with tuning boxes is they can only increase the rail pressure to increase fuelling, this will give an increase but you won't get the same kind of results as a remap. Tuning box is removeable so if you intend to only keep the car a short time you could remove the box and sell it on. I am not sure I would pay over £300 for a box though.

So after a few more journeys I have noticed a improvement in power although I was expecting more if I'm honest. When reading past reviews of people who have 120 or 150 ps cars and describe the difference as like driving a completely new car left me wanting a bit more especially with 60bhp and 100nm increase. It doesn't feel like I'm driving a 300hp car so there for I may be sending it back and I might try the dtuk box. If I feel the same then I will probably stick with it as I'll be looking into upgrading my car in 2years and don't want to spend £400 on a remap I can't switch over in a short space of time.

i recently payed 350 for stage 2 DNA remap and dpf gutting and wouldnt look back no smoke at all which was my main concern, never really tried the piggy back boxes also never being tempeted when they cost about or more than a remap

Ok so the latest news regarding the tuning box.

I also tried a box from dtuk which had no effect on my car what so ever, so I sent that back too. I emailed Tdi tuning to send there box back and they asked me to bring the car to them so they could have a look. Since this was a 2 hour drive away I decided to take it has they said they have mapped many of the 3.0 Tdi with great success.

So yesterday I managed to take my car in and the first thing they did was try a new box to eliminate the other box being faulty, took it for a drive and no effect. So when we got back we switched the box to the highest settings and took it for another drive. I felt a little more response lower down the Rev range but it was very minimal so I wasn't happy with that either. The guy then had a look at the maps via the laptop to customise it further to suit my needs. Took the car out for another drive and when accelerating from 30-70 on the dual carriageway the car made a clonk as we just got past 60mph. When we got back I decided to go for a refund as the car didn't seem to accept the tuning box. Tdi tuning discussed a remap directly on the ecu but I wanted to have a think about my options plus there is a guy local to me who specialises in revo maps and has a 4x4 dyno.

My options are either a bluefin unit or the revo map. Both are the same price. The bluefin is about 193bhp and 582nm the revo was about 287 and 600nm but I think this is a minimum as other people have got 300bhp and closer to 650nm.

Going from experience, tuning boxes give little to no difference for me. I proper remap by an decent garage gives an amazing increase in Torque and good differences in HP.

I've used TRL (theracingline.net) a few times, with a VW a Seat and now the A4 i've got. Always impressive... Only thing they couldn't do this time was put it on the Dyno, for some reason the quottro cars go into limp mode... (if anyone knows why, love to know) but anyway, long story short:
Tuning box = poor.
Remap = Great.

When I ran my car on the dyno at MRC it was having issues. The problem is related to the front and rear roller speeds not being kept the same.
Even turning off the ESP using the switch makes no difference.
The way around it is to disconnect the ABS module. The large connector thats on the module. The dash lights up like a Christmas tree but the car will behave itself on the dyno and not keep cutting the power.

I bought a DTUK box for a 2.0 Dti Vauxhall SRi a few years back.
It did feel quicker, but within 400 miles the engine management light came on, it had filled the DPF. So I took it off, went for a good long thrash to burn out the DPF and sent to box back.

Did you get a full refund? I've been charged a restocking fee despite not being satisfied with the product! Not happy!

I think what is appealing about tuning boxes is the fact that you can fit them to your next car for a much smaller fee. In 2 years time I would have to pay another £400 for a remap on a new vehicle but only £100 with a tuning box. Just a guess with the numbers but you know what I mean.

You managed to get a reply? I've just gone to my credit card company about it instead.

I Havn't heard from dtuk since I sent a rather unhappy email regarding the part refund, I have allowed a few days over the xmas period for them to answer back. If I don't hear anything by tomorrow evening I will be contacting Paypal and see if they will do a charge back for me. I've heard many good things about dtuk but it seems once they have your money they don't care.

Tdi tuning gave me a full refund excluding p&p of course. My car just doesn't want to accept a tuning box.

Just fitted a DTUK box to mine and it's knocked 1.5 seconds off my 3rd gear 2000-4600rpm time.

Performed some logging on it today with results as below.
Run 1, Run 2 and Run 3 were all performed on near flat surfaces.
Run 1 is the reverse of Run 3
Run 2 is slightly more inclined, hence why Run 2 is always the longest.
Each run was always started in the same position and repeated in each configuration.

Rpm was held at approx. 1900rpm then WOT (Wide Open Throttle) applied. Results were then read off from 2000rpm.

DTUK setting P1 +3 was noticeably better then P3 -2.
Not only proven in the captured results but even noticeable by the road position at which point the desired rpm was reached and upshift was required.
