My current provider is Green Flag, and it's up for renewal at the end of this month. GF wants £54.88 to renew; that's Recovery Plus, which covers me in the UK for homestart, roadside assitance and recovery, hire car or alternate transport for onward journey etc. I've done a price comparison, and there are cheaper providers, but none of them are names I have any knoweldge or experience of.

So I'm interested in people's experiences of cover providers.

My insurance provider is AIB (via Adrian Flux and for both S4 and A3). My premium includes breakdown cover including in EU. I have not had separate breakdown for the last three years. I am paying £465 for S4 and £427 for the A3.

I have used Greenflag in the past though on my B5 and B7s and found them to be cheapest compared to others at the time.

I’ve been with the AA for over 20 years now. A few years ago they upgraded me to gold member which was great because it provides EU breakdown cover. The problem was, a year later and beyond they started charging gold membership prices.

I don’t use any of the perks other than the key loss cover, but that relies on whoever finding them putting them in the post and it going through the delivery system.

Every year I challenge their cost and they do provide some sort of discount.

I've had AA and RAC, AA charged something like £130 odd to pick me up despite having cover due to it being an incident or something along those lines, can't remember if it was RAC or AA who also charged mileage as I was outside a set radius or something. Needless to say and I'm sure this will also divide opinion but I now just don't pay for breakdown cover and just pay for the local breakdown bloke to get us if it's local and he only charges about £50.

Another thing I've noticed is they also use alternate local breakdown cover companies to pick people up sometimes which is a bit of a cheek as I'm sure they pay them less and keep the difference.

Also sometimes use a good old trusty rope to tow car's because I'm a pikey like that.

Same here, I first challenged them 3 years ago and they eventually gave me a cracking discount and held that price for the next 3 years, so this year it was back to the proper price, so with nothing to lose and being again willing to move, I looked around and found what their new member price was for my current level of cover - and said that I'd pay that, and they accepted that. The first time that I challenged them it seemed like it was a "no no" unless I signed up for the key cover, so I went through the required steps but we have key cover elsewhere. My only requested Home Start was my 2000 VW Passat 4Motion when I changed the fuel filter and could not get it going again - that meant a 3rd party turned up with an exceedingly long recovery truck so obviously never intended initially to get it going, but could not extract it from my garage with that kit! The driver knew a local AA patrol who was an expert on "V" engines so he contacted him and it and he turned up and got it going after putting oil into each cylinder, so that was okay - but when it came time to comment on the service, I was very annoying that when using the AA patrol's standard form I had to make out that he was the problem, when in fact it was the AA controller who dispatched the wrong assets! Luckily a marketing company followed up on my comments, so I gave them the true reason for that complaint - but I'm sure the AA just binned/ignored it as it worked out okay for them at that moment, sod the customer. I have had very good service from the AA when it looked like that I needed getting recovered back home from near M-K, they dispatched a specialist who, given my description of the failure, broken front spring, set out to sort that out where the car was on a driveway - and he did within a few hours, which for anyone that has had to work on the front suspension of a B5, could have been a very nasty task! Luckily for him/me I had spent quite a lot of time just prior to this journey making sure that the long bolt at the top of the leg could turn and was greased!

Thanks for all the input: I’ve decided to stick with Green Flag.

£54,88 !! that seems a cracking deal, i to am with Green Flag and paid just over £150 last time.

Won't be paying that next time after seeing your price.

I wouldn't bother. A lot of these companies you can join on the spot if you break down.

Last time I broke down was over 10 years ago so I've saved a few quid. Told my niece the same when she passed her test. Broke down 4 years later and joined the AA over the phone and robs your father's brother and covered for a whole 12 months until it runs out

I’ve always challenged the price even after they’ve said ok just this year.

Really annoys me how newbies get a greater discounr.
