Oil pressure light

Hi there i have a 1999 1.8t quattro and after service the oil pressure light comes on which unfortunately i thought was oil level so i added more oil into the engine.
The car does smell very rich when running. the warning light is now off but am unsure of which problems can cause the pressure light to come on.

Not good news with that, it may be wise to drop the sump and look at the pick up. Low oil level would cause low pressure but it would have to be very low for this to happen. Normally the warning light comes on very late and by this point it's normally caused it's damage.

I'd be tempted to get it oil pressure tested to confirm if it's a dodgy sensor or a knackered pump/pickup etc
