Oil low warning

So the low oil level warning has just come on. I'm pretty annoyed, the car has only done 4000 miles in 4 months. There is not a single oil mark on my drive way, so I assume the dealer didn't top up the oil level before doing the handover.

Little things like this just shouldn't happen with this brand! I feel like I should complain, but its not about the cost of the oil, its more about the fact that I shouldn't be having this type of issue...

I keep a check of the oil level in the MyAudi app, I've noticed it fluctuates quite a bit, but it's 2 bars down after just under 3k:

Audi regard oil consumption of anything up to 1 litre per 1000 miles as acceptable. I also notice that in the MyAudi app the level goes up and down a huge amount from day to day. Shame we do not have the luxury of a dipstick, would make it so much simpler

    Hi Dave,
Yes, that sort of consumption would be ok, I know diesels use a bit of oil. I know the oil level was low because I noticed it when I first installed the MyAudi app. Two or three bars from memory, although I don't really use the app so can't remember exactly. I didn't really give it much thought. however that roughly matches your consumption as well, so the dealer didn't top it up!

1L per 1000 miles? That sounds really high. Where does that come from?

It comes from what has been the official response from Audi when people have complained about oil consumption in the past. It is regretable but the design changes to engines to make them more fuel efficient and to meet the mutlitude of different legislative requirements has resulted in the tendancy for engines to use more oil. https://autoexpert.com.au/posts/the-truth-about-oil-consumption-in-modern-cars

None of my Audi's have ever needed the oil topping up between services. Yes Audi had an issue with one engine using excessive oil but the issue was quickly fixed.
However with both of those Audi's a litre of oil was supplied in a nice pouch...

So you knew the oil level was low, did nothing about it, and 4000 miles later, it’s the dealers fault that the low oil level warning came on, and you had to top up the oil?:wtf:

My 55 TFSI A7 came with a litre of spare oil in the boot with the first aid kit! Don't know if this was Audi's doing, or the dealership.
That said, I've driven 1.5k miles and level is unchanged.

Wow. I wasn't expecting someone to say this was my fault!

I'll re-iterate the point in my original post:

Little things like this just shouldn't happen with this brand! I feel like I should complain, but its not about the cost of the oil, its more about the fact that I shouldn't be having this type of issue...

Even if I wanted to complain to the dealer and have them resolve it, I'm not in a position to drive the 200 mile round trip to go to the dealer so they can top up with 1L of oil.

Why complain, just put some oil in the engine, as If the handbook say's it uses oil then it uses oil. Your only option would be to find another brand or model that uses no oil. Also why drive 200miles to an Audi dealer, your nearest Audi dealer will/should take care of any complaints or issues with the car (excluding rejection that would need to be taken up with the purchasing dealer)

The car is not using an excessive amount of oil. The original point was, I was disappointed that the dealer didn't complete the pre-delivery checks correctly, and whilst it only cost me £12 to rectify, by buying a litre of oil, that's not what I expect from Audi.

My 3.0TDI settles at two notches from MAX at 500 miles and still at this same level after 3500. Keep close eye on it. A dipstick would be a very sensible option!

Don't really understand why after 4000 miles of driving and having to add 500ml of oil you equate this to the dealer not doing ht e delivery checks properly. Driving off the forecourt and the light coming on I would agree. 4000 miles later, that is just usage and some cars just use a bit more oil than others

I equate it that way because, looking at that photo that Dave posted earlier, we have both approximated to about the same consumption, but his started from completely full. Mine was around 1/4 full.
Not sure where the 500ml from, I added over a litre. Apparently empty to full on the "gauge" is 1L.

If in another 4000 miles I have to put in another litre, then I'll understand that it is consuming a lot of oil...

    Hmmm
It would be useful to know how much oil each notch on the oil gauge equates to. Obviously, this will differ between engine sizes and types.

My oil warning came up today for the first time - after 11,000 miles.

Slight subject change - I've had to put in 20 litres of ad-blu.

My oil gauge is showing 3/4 full 1 week and 130 miles in, so maybe they didn't bother to top up pre delivery?

500ml topup at 3k miles for me. Never had to touch the oil on my 535d in between services.

Hummmm, that to me does seem like an over-design of something that worked pretty well. Do you know if it gives the engine any advantage by not having one.

They've phased them out these days as the electronic sensor is accurate enough. Plus, at many dealerships they remove the oil through that now using a suction pump...

Disappointed that the dealers are clueless as to the amount of oil required per “indicator mark” for a give size of engine

Ahh, so you have to put a little oil in, then check the app, then put some more oil in and check the app etc..

Still not overly impressed they have gone down this high tech route as it sounds like more hassle than it should be. A bit like changing a bulb in the headlight of an on A4 where you had to take half the car apart to get access unless you could find a double jointed chimney sweep sized child to to it. Either they offer these sort of things as a free service, or they make it possible to self maintain.

for the 3.0 TDI “50” engine, on the MMI display, there are four notches. On the iPhone app, 8 notches.
Either way, volume of oil between the Maximum and Minimum is 1.0 litres.

    May thanks to AUDI READING

4000 miles consumption was 0.4 litres so 0.1 L per thousand miles is hardly excessive.

Just got back from a gentle 400 mile motorway run over the weekend (40tdi) - Now down from 5/8 to 3/8 notches. If 1litre is 8 notches - I've just used 250mls on 400 miles

The car has barely done 750 miles and I see that the first 5000km are supposed to be higher consumption but if 100ml/1000km is "standard" then my 625ml/1000km is significantly up ...

Have no idea what the Minimum to Maximum oil level indication volume equates in the 2.0 oil burner. I’d certainly check before pouring in large quantities as over-fill can be problematic.

Have to say the 2.0 “40”engines I drove in Germany (very low km) and the hire “40” vehicle a few weeks ago (16k Miles) sounded and felt quite rough. Colleague mentioned one “40” he had with higher mileage (approx 20000 km) smoothed out a lot but he was still tipping in oil every 1000 or so km in a hire car . He drives a Mercedes E 250 estate and was staggered basically how poor the Audi engine stacked up his on a like for like basis. Only the Tech pack impressed him.

The 3.0 certainly did not hang about after the first 1000 or so miles. Like me, he prefers the 3.0 “50” drive but after my injector problem at 300 miles, I’ll be taking the Merc on a long Euro trip until my “50” has put down more miles. As it’s our businesses, breakdowns are disastrous for logistics and planning, not to mention cost control.

On my “50” the oil level readings were very consistent. Checked 1h after parking up on level drive.
