Hi Guys, I topped up the engine oil @ 2 months ago and I'm getting a warning light again already. Do the 2.0 TFSI engines really need this much oil ? Its still under warranty from Audi with only 30k miles so should I book it in or just by shares in the Gulf of Mexico, sorry meant BP!!

Any help appreciated.

Andy :crying:

Is there any signs of leaks etc, mine doesnt lose any to be honest so i would say something is a miss..................................................maybe the sump plug :)

The TFSI engine is known to burn oil. And from speaking to people it seems more of an unusual thing if it didn't use any.
Mine uses approximately a litre every 2-3k miles, but never gets so low that it triggers the warning.

When you topped it up last did you fill it to the max on the dipstick?? And how many miles have you driven since??

My 2006/55 is the same. It had a full service with Audi when I bought it about 4 months ago and hit the oil warning light about 2 weeks ago. I did a little research and found that the 2.0T is quite oil thirsty, something I wasn't aware of before

mine doesnt use that much, ive done 3.5k since i got it, when it had a full service, checked the oil the other day and the oil level is half way down on the dip stick, and its not as tho i drive the car slowly!

As above, mine is the same. My Audi dealer told me they can use 1 litre per 1000 miles so it's normal...

I would not be happy if it burnt 1 litre per 1000 miles, (£60-00 oil in 4k miles) that is a cop out, and unacceptable, even my RX8 did not burn nothing like that, and that is suppose to burn oil, Mine has done about 4k since I last checked it no oil light yet.

I would go out and check it now, but it is in Audi Garage again

1 litre per 1,000 miles? I agree, unacceptable!

I've done @ 6k miles since buying in May, so I guess from the replies that I'm not doing too bad and lets face it the cost of oil is not increasing in line with petrol ! I knew I shouldn't have let my wife persuade me out of buying the RS4 instead (would have blown my petrol argument out of the water though).

Thanks all

Hi
This is my second A5 TFSI 2 litre Audi. The first burnt virtually no oil. In comparison this one appears to be drinking it! The oil and filter were changed only last week at 8600 miles as I like to look after the engine. The car has covered approx 180 miles since then - 7 days ago and is about 30-35% down on the MMI. This is becoming worrying and although there is no loss of power I suspect that burning large quantities of oil is unlikely to enhance the car's efficiency.

had my A3 2.0t for nearly 2 years and covered 20k in it i have only had to top the oil up once and it was only at halfway on the dip stick at this point but this was when it was last serviced by a specialist and quantum oil was used i have serviced the car my self and used shell helix ultra extra oil and it has not gone down at all in 5k! so i think it is mainly down to the quality of the oil used as i know that halfrauds cheap oil is known for burning quickly! oh halfrauds oil is castrol if you all didn't already know

1 ltr every 1000 miles sounds expensive to me.Surely somethings wrong?

As said above the 2.0TFSI engines a reknowned for drinking oil. lol However mine only uses a 1 litre every 8 months or so towards when a service is due, so i just top it up. I wouldn't worry about it mate as it a 'feature' of the engine, just ensure that you keep a eye on the levels and top up when neccessary.

1 litre every 1500 miles approx in mine.
Although strangely/coincidentally I have noticed since swapping from v-power to momentum petrol my oil usage has reduced to about 2000-2500 miles per litre.

IIRC the industry acceptable limit is 1L per 1000 miles.

The consumption on mine seems to of slowed down somewhat, but mine is a low mileage car (22k) so wondering whether as the miles go on the drinking stops... Of oil anyway!!

Mine's a TDi 140, so a different engine, but the handbook is still the same. If you have a look in there under the oils section it states how much oil is acceptable for it to consume and it's a lot more than you'd think!

Although, it seems to vary a lot from one car to another. We had 5 new A3's at my work a few years ago and I'm told they all used different amounts. 3 used about a litre for every 2000miles and the others hardly used any. I'm not sure if it's to do with every engine being slightly different, or if it's down to how the car is driven. By that I don't necessarily mean if it's thrashed or not, but instead down to things like journey length and whether it's motorway miles or town driving.
I've covered a few thousand in mine now and it hasn't budged. The first thing I did when I got the car was buy a litre of oil to keep in the boot though, as I wasn't sure if mine was going to be a user or not.

I started this thread about it when I first got the car and although it was to do with the diesel engines, a couple of people commented on how the TFSI engine was the same.

I've got a 2005 2.0T and it's had about 0.5L in 10,000 miles.

I use the original oil recommended by audi and have replaced the oil and oil filter at 1000 and 8600 miles - just to protect the engine!

That could be a possibility. Mine's done 90,000 and hasn't used a drop since I've had it.
Just out of interest - those of you that are big oil users, what mileage have you done?

I had a VR6 that drank oil and the official line from VW was 1ltr/1000miles was the manufacturers tolerance. In other words..Tuff, go away. :) the fact that coasting down hill resulted in a cloud of blue smoke when you came back on the gas didn't seem to concern them.

My Octavia VRs 1.8T was the same. Used to use 1itre every 1000 miles.

Haven't had my 2.0 TFSi that long but will keep an eye on it now.

The car just completed its initial oil test and was judged to be using 0.87 of a litre in 600 miles! I understand that replacement of the crankshaft seal and a crankshaft pressure release valve is now to be undertaken together with software updates and if this reduces the oil usage to half a litre or less of oil over the same distance that Audi will do no more as they consider this an acceptable level of consumption! I will just have to wait and see. The car goes in for repair to-morrow the 9 August.

Last year Audi updated the software, crankcase seal etc because my 2010 car was using excessive amounts of oil. This initially appeared to slow consumption to something like 1 litre per 1900 miles. Since then consumption has become progressively worse with the car, checked yesterday, using 1 litre per 868miles!
I have just over 20000miles on the car which will run out of warrenty next September. Does anyone know how much fitting new pistons and rings etc is likely to cost me through an Audi dealer or alternatively via the motor trade if I eventually end up having to pay for it myself?
If you ended up having to split the engine every 2 or 3 years this would prove to be a rather expensive car to run.
Thanks in anticipation
