Oil balance shaft Modification

Hi Phil thats good to know as mine is booked in for friday,i wont be going to meadowhall we are dropping off and collecting sat,Just out of curriosity what did you pay for yours to be done,pm me if you dont want to show on here, thanks mate.

I asked if I could see the old part before it went back to KMB and lo and behold loads of wear and play on the shaft. My paranoia has paid off for once. 84k on the clock on my Avant, just for reference...

Arrgh I'm at 104k - getting it done at the end of next month, you can see what's going to happen....

Popped along to my local Audi specialist before work to chat about this and get a quote to compare - he said if it was his car, he wouldn't change the hex key and shaft preventatively - just make sure you stop as soon as the red oil light comes on. Think I still will though as I need the car for work and can't afford it suddenly going out of commission.

Not much of an Audi specialist then .

Yep that specialist lives a lovely fluffy world! What if you're 3 hours from any civilisation? - unlikely you're going to break down just outside their front door...

Even worse was a VW Mainstealer Master tech that said he would simply switch off at the flicker of a warning , lol.

Thats a big risk you are taking 6k for a new engine or 600 for the mod,im only doing mine out of prevention, who know`s it could take 6mths/6 years to go but when it does go helo 6k,as for that mechanic that told you that turn engine off straight away all well and good if you are only doing 20mph plus what have been told is that oil light sometimes doesn`t show up by then its too late, what happens on the motorway at motorway speeds are you really going to turn your engine off in the fast lane.,anyway its your choice ya pays ya money, like i said mine is in tomorrow

He did say if you do a lot of motorway miles/long journeys and weren't able to stop quickly it might be worth considering, but if the car is only used for short trips around town then its less of an issue.

There's plenty on the road that will be getting on in terms of mileage, how many have had the part replaced? Like you say, could go next week, could never go...

Yeah you could be right it might not even go but who wants to take that risk for the sake of 600 quid

That's what I'm thinking, spend £600 now and it will hopefully mean the car is good for another four or five years (then it will hopefully be time for an S4).

Well there you go thats my thinking behind me having it done, mine had a new turbo last month so i wont be getting rid for at least 2yrs.

Had mine done yesterday picked up this morning i also asked to see the old parts and yes mine was worn quite badly too and its only done 75k miles,so money well spent, can`t fault the guy`s at Mb services they defo know what they are doing at that garage, mine will be booked in for a stage 1 remap with them and at a good price too, just have to save a few quid now to pay for it after this mod and a new turbo last month, all i can say is get it DONE before you regret it.

Ordered my parts today from KMB. The car goes into the garage in 2 weeks time. happy days lol. Got a road trip around Cornwall coming up as well so needed to get done before I put on the miles.

can someone tell me is it true that on the BRB engines from a certain point they were modified? If so how can I tell if my engine has or has not!

Thnx
Hi
I thought BRB engines were 1.9 tdi ,
Are these also effected with the oil pump drive problem
Thanks

Only 2.0 tdi .
Ok cool
I only asked as the op asked about the BRB and oil pump drives
Then the conversation went on to 2 litres so i just wanted to clarify as i hadnt heard anything about the BRB 1.9 so was just checking it was only effecting certain 2 litre diesels
In fact you dont hear much about the BRB 1.9 at all is it that bad ?

Good I guess , is there many of them ?

As long as it doesn't throw a leg out of bed like BXE and BKC .

No idea how many there are they only seems to be in early b7s then the 2litre took over
Hopefully they were still using steel in the conrods and good shells before they started using cheese as in the BXE , BKC .
Sorry for the thread hijack all i will ****** off now
Thanks for the info :)

OK. I've followed the Oil Pump/Hex Key/Balance Shaft for some time now and there's a fair bit (understatement) of info to be found on the B7 pages alone.

However, the one vital piece of info that is missing is simply this.....when (which model/engines etc) was this issue corrected on VAG 2.0 TDIs ????

Or are later (or, even current) VAG TDIs still affected ??
.

All PD 2.0 TDI , some early CR have the inferoir 77mm .

2011+ CR should all be 100mm .

Cheers Gaz,

That's very helpful.

My Cab has crossed the 100k miles mark and was considering upgrading before the extended warranty expires later in the year. Am not sure I could stretch to a post 2011 Audi A5 cab so may have to consider other VAG models.
