Odd Tdi judder :/

Hi Guys...newbie here I have an 2.0tdi (dreaded BKD) on a 53 plate. Only has 58k on the clock and it has recently developed this issue.When the car gets to running temp it judders, only happens when in 5th or 6th and only around 1.5-2k revs. When its cold it pulls brilliantly, its just as soon as it gets around the 90 mark it appears, which is why I'm kinda stumped.If anyone could shed some light on this for me I would be grateful to say the least

mine did a simular thing it juddered through the rev range which ended up being a fuel temp sensor
only cost about £12 from dealer and about 2mins to fit

Mine had a similar issue. turned out to be the Tandem Fuel/Vacuum pump. If you pull out the fuel filter, and there is oil in the fuel and filter, then this is more than likely the Tandem pump.

If this is the case, change the pump (300 quid from Audi only), and run the fuel tank down to minimum, then you'll need to clean out the fuel tank with old rags. The in tank fuel pump will need cleaning out too. Then let a few tanks worth of fuel run through the engine with normal use, and then change the fuel filter, and clean the fuel temp sensor.

If its still making the judder, then you might need to have the injector seals changed.

Jord, did the temp sensor give a fault code?

Ahh yea i should have mentioned i have just changed the tandem pump, didnt do the tank clean though, will do that this weekend and see if there is an improvement

I've only done the tandem pump at the moment too, but spoke to an extremely nice chap at a diesel specialists, who has done loads of these, and he said you won't get rid of the symptoms without cleaning out the tank, and the in tank pump, and sometimes, due to the oil contamination, they have had to change the in tank pump as well.

Thanks for the advice Elgy, I took the tank pump out to find it covered in oil, just like the tank. I pumped out the fuel and cleaned out the tank. The fuel is black so I wont be using that again, will just buy some fresh. As for the pump, me and the old man have spent most the afternoon cleaning it...extremely time consuming . Sticking it all back together tomorrow with fresh fuel, hopefully that will do the trick.

Let me know how you get on once you have the pump back in. Was it so much work to clean the pump that its worth just fitting a new one? Or would you recommend cleaning it? A new one is 170 quid ish.

Worth a try cleaning it. It isn't hard work, the oil just wipes off, its just time consuming if you want it near spotless because of all the silly little compartments etc. I would recommend running it to near enough fumes and grab yourself a jerry can of fresh fuel. I pumped out 8/9 litres of useless fuel (dark blue-black).

It is a simple job, just rip up the back seat, remove retaining ring and pull the pump out. I cleaned the tank from there, couldn't be bothered to remove the tank. Not sure if this is the same process on a sportback, but would of thought so. I used an old washer jet pump from a Pug 206 and wired it to a cig lighter lead. worked a treat :icon_thumright:

Will keep you informed on how it runs... although I just found out my rear spring has snapped wont be sorting this till the weekend.

I'm sure you could have done without a broken spring so soon after fixing another problem. On the up side, its the perfect time for uprating the suspension to something else:thumbsup: I just put eibach sportlines on mine, and so far they are awesome! I think the ride is so much better than the standard S-Line, and I don't think it looks too low either. If you want the same height, then i'm sure the 30mm proline kit or the 35mm HR kit would be avast improvement too!

Just an update really, i have done around 60 miles the weekend and its getting better. Got the week off work so going to change the fuel filter today and run it for a few tanks then change again. Hopefully this will fully cure the issue

Update, issue fully cured. Not a even a slight judder anymore. I'm sure this would be a quicker process for others, but as i only do about 100 miles a week if that due to company vehicle its took a while... but cured none the less

Mines still juddering, but only gone through a single tank of fuel since cleaning out the fuel pump and filter. How many tanks of fuel did you run through it before it stopped completely?

Only 2, used vpower, thought it might help. Whether it did or not is a different matter.

I'll have to see what mine is like after the second tank, but I can't say I'm feeling too hopefull! Did you manage to do anything to clean out the actual pump its self, and not just the plastic housing/assembly/galleries that it sits in? All I did was the assembly, and didn't really know what to do about the pump internals in the metal/electric pump section.

All I did was pull all the plastic housing apart and cleaned it all including the gauze with paraffin. I didn't pull the actual pump apart, didn't want to mess something up lol.

Just keep an eye on your fuel filter, when its black change it. Thats all i did. I guess the new filter i stuck in caught most of it.

Cant you even feel it slightly getting better?

I did the same with the pump as you. Its a bit better but not anywhere near how I would expect. I'll have to keep an eye onthe filter, and if that fails then I am aware that sometimes the injector seals need doing as the oil degrades them. At 100 quid for the seal kits, I don't really want to have to do that!

Interesting thread, I have an issue with my 2006 A3 2.0tdi 140 where it judders at around 4000 rpm under full throttle. From what I've read it could be loss of fuel pressure?

Can someone confirm the different elements of the fuel system, in tank pump I presume is a low pressure fuel transfer pump?, tandem pump... High pressure pump for common rail?, why is it called tandem?

Check the fuel filter first, canister behind the OS headlight with 4 hoses going to it. Undo the 6 tox bolts & carefully pull the lid off, reach in & pull out the filter, if its anything other than white/grey (providing its a VAG genuine filter), change it.

It is... mine is in with audi at the moment after having the injectors replaced. I think this is down to a member of staff that has been dismissed.

I've got the 2.0 PD170 TDI on a 08. december it got a service and 4 new injectors under the recall. The next day the injector failed and audi towed it back to them and botched it up to run again (i was told it was replaced with 4 new injectors again). My judder persisted to get worse and blocked my DPF and i had to remove it. I then replaced the tandem pump and cleaned the fuel system to eliminate any possible contamination and since then it has gone back to Audi twice.

I have spoke with Audi UK and they have ordered a full investigation into the matter. Basically, how it stands at the moment is that the work supposed to be carried out by the technician incharge didnt happen and there is no file but they have my car on record as being in, especially since i had their TT TFSI quattro for 3 weeks.

I will keep you posted on whats gone on with it as they are looking in every nook and cranny.

I have had bad experiences with main dealers also. I also find them a bit arrogant which is particularly frustrating as an I'm an engineer who works for a diesel engine manufacturer and can quickly tell when they don't know their stuff. Good luck with your problem, it sounds very stressful and inconvenient.
