hi planning a trip to the ring next year were all from scotland so are going to get the ferry from newcastle to amsterdam, basically looking for any tips or advice on it, were going in the first 2 weeks of august. best time to go ? during week etc any places to stay or good websites to check out any help would be great thanks graeme

Been a few times with the friends from my GTROC days. I hope to take the Audi there next year, work permitting.
Not going Daddy Mode on you, but here, in no particular order, my opinions and ramblings.
Make sure the Ring will not be closed on the dates you are choosing. There are times when companies will have booked.
Don't go on a Bank Holiday. Will be very crowded so queues to get on will be huge.
Public days you will not know the skill levels of the other drivers so be very sensible and drive well within your limits as the track is very long and not very forgiving.
You will see a lot of VW Golfs, Peugeot etc. If they have local plates, let them past. These guys know the track really, really well and you may get caught out if trying to keep up with them.
WEAR A CRASH HELMET!
DO NOT CRASH! You will be charged for damaging barriers etc and also for closing the cct. They will take your credit card details before they take your name.
75% of the turns are blind.
The sun can really blind you on some of the inclines.
The Karussel is my favourite turn in the world. Ever. Take it low and stay low when you exit or you will get thrown sideways.
If you can, arrange insurance which covers you for your time on track. I have [and haven't]. I always did after one of our group landed upside down in his M3.
Places to stay.
The Tiergarten is far and away the best hotel [in my opinion]. Book well in advance. Free wifi too so you can post here to say how much fun you're having.
Evening meal ... Steak on a Stone ... Fantastic. Beers are really good, but so is the wine and they do have Rum
The drive to the Ring is just as much fun, and sometimes more, than the Ring itself. Be very careful with your speed limits though.
When letting the car stretch its legs a bit, do so sensibly with your group, you can easily reach some quite nice speeds [I have been passenger in a GTR doing welll over 190] but even at 150+ you don't want to be too close to your friends cars.
If you have a PS3 or Xbox, drive the Ring on it. It really is quite accurate BUT it does not give you the feeling of camber etc when you are actually on the road.
Enjoy the trip. It is a fantastic experience.

thanks alot for the reply, yeah ive got alot more research to do, been looking at the good and the bad stuff seem to be alot of accidents and that as well so a tad nervous. ill make sure to move out the way of anyone thats moving faster haha i keep hearing about this steak defo going to be trying this, ill check out the hotel you mentioned this will be my first track day in my own car done a couple of they experiences with gtrs, r8s and ferraris so will be taking it easy as I'm one of they guys whos a bit of a freak with there cars dont even like it being dirty never mind damaged lol

Mate of mine goes frequently. He says there are only 2 barriers you need to be mindful of on the whole circuit, the one on the left and the one on the right.
Seriously though he reckons if you drive within your limits and don't get tempted to over push yourself and the car you should be pretty ok.
Not been myself but it's on my list of places to go and my mrs is well up for the trip.

I have seen a few well experienced drivers fall short on the Ring and some others come close,one was in his 80k Porsche and hit one corner which nearly ended in disaster,a lap later his co-pilot said be careful this time which he agreed and he came even closer to oblivion.
I have wanted to go as it is the ultimate circuit but just haven't managed to get enough time on tracks to warrant it,do it and you will enjoy it.

Thanks for advice and comments really looking forward to it I'm a complete novice at track days only ever done a couple experience days so ill be driving well in my limits and letting any one passed that is moving quicker like my car to much lol hopefully get it booked up soon just waiting on a few getting back so we have numbers going on a road trip aswell not sure where yet but my mate has a couple places he wants to visit

Yeah I read a few things on it and says to do that let them know it's safe to pass, driving on wrong side will be a challenge but I've told my mate he's in the lead on the way there he drives artic lorries so ill follow him haha thanks again for the tips always good talking to guys that's done it or has experience on tracks can't wait

im heading there first week of august too with a few friends, not pushing it around the track just going for the experience cannot wait!, where going from dover to dunk- then to nurb - then to amsterdam and back down. be on the track monday 4th tuesday 5th AUG!
Is it open in august ? We were meant to be going then but I've had a look. At the calender and doesn't seem to have tourist days in august?? As there seems to be touring cars and other things on
When I last looked the calender wasnt fully up to date. But had major events down on every weekend but mon-thur seemed to be open as per! Need to confirm tho!
I mailed them and asked more dates to be released in couple months so ill just plan my trip and then once there up ill pick a week can't wait to go
Yeh wish I had that option too really but have to book nearly a year ahead in my work to get the time off! :/ even if its only open in the evening when I go il be happy! Some track time is better than none!
I think were going to be going either the end if July or first week in august just waiting on the calender being released so we can plan everything
The ring isn't really like a track day, it's a very different experience again. It's a lot more scary than a track day.
Don't drive it in the wet, it's like driving on ice from the amount of oil, unburnt fuel and rubber on the track. Leave the ego at home, don't worry about trying to get that 8min lap, just concentrate in getting round and learning where the track goes. Make sure you have insurance, it's expensive, but not as much as the lawsuit when a biker comes off on the coolant you've dropped and you pay for the airlift and medical bills.
Go in with your eyes wide open at the potential costs, track closure is something like â¬1000/hr, Armco is â¬200/section and they will replace at least 3 sections, they will charge you for reseeding the grass!
And the positives, it's amazing
make sure you get some beers and steak on a stone at the pistenklause, best steak I've had in Europe loads of amazing driving roads in the forest nearby, where your insurance is valid and the bikers aren't trying to kill themselves on your bumper, the castle is cool. It's been a few years since we went, but eddies is pretty good if you want somewhere in town, or if you don't mind being a bit further out, hotel Hoch Acht is pretty good and a bit quieter. Loads of nice mtb trails in the woods nearby and lots of good spots to watch the racing.Thanks for the advice yeah I'm kinda shi@&£ my pants a bit tbh no doubt it will be amazing fun but my s3 is my pride and joy so kinda nervous taking it, what sort of insurance are you talking about ? So basically you can't get insurance for it and if you do I'm guessing it's gonna cost an absolute fortune. I'll be taking my time anyways just hope there no idiots on while I'm

You need third party liability or you're taking a massive risk. Sure crashing your car will hurt your wallet, but when you get a £150k bill for a bikers medical expenses, most people would be looking at selling their house, going bankrupt or both. My bosses brother is currently fighting a £120k claim after his m3 dumped is coolant, a biker hit it and ended up in hospital, the m3 owner is liable for all the bikers medical expenses as it was his car that caused the accident. Weekday evenings is the best bet, you need to be careful in the morning as if its cool you get patches of dew under the trees, so the track alternates between dry and damp.
How do you go about getting insurance for it then ? Sorry if I sound stupid lol I'll keep that in mind about the morning thanks
There's a bunch of specialists that will cover it, none of the regular uk insurers do anymore (there is an argument that EU law prevents a uk insurer selectively refusing to cover a specific road in the uk, but all that means is your insurance company will pay out, then recover the costs from you after).
Best bet is to get on the ring specific forums and ask who people use, last time I looked it was like £50/day. Another option might be to rent a race car, which comes with German insurance (and a hefty excess), but that way you only risk the excess, not the s3 or the house!
The important thing is to go in with your eyes open to what it can cost, as it's a superb road and the beer, steak and people are awesome.. I've driven it quite a few times, with varying degrees of cover, and been lucky, but there are so many people who are less lucky, generally due to overconfidence (like the noobs in the tvr with 'ring slayer' number plates - they left in the helicopter). Ironically the best laps I've done we're in my old a6 tdi, Quattro really helps an average driver like me on the mix of surfaces.

That the best fuel to get ? Lol I use shells vpower so was actually gonna ask what's best fuel to use while there 36!!! Prob wouldn't manage to move let alone drive after that haha
depends what ur car is mapped to I suppose. vpower is only 99 octanes. we put the 102 octane fuel in my mates vts and what a difference
the mpg we got with it on the way back to brussels was amazing too.It will be stage 2+ by then so ill put in the best stuff I can were going to south of France and then to the ring so bit of a road trip should

I went a few years ago in my A4 Avant, did 11.80 and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Things to note, I had never even been around it on a playstation but had a mate sat next to me who had done around 80 laps previously and had a good idea where things were.
Its also not as wide as you think its going to be, its bumpier than you expect, and keep tight to the left around the mini karusall as if you drift out towards the right on the exit you will leave the ground briefly, I was doing around 70mph and had sideways tyresqueal.
Going again August bank holiday weekend.

im there sunday the 3rd AUG to tuesday 5th... website says track it open the sunday aswel as the evenings. il be happy if i only get on it once TBH, just taking it as drive not as a track day, im going with 8 people 4 cars.
Well 4 weeks till we leave for ring does anyone know if I need to get the euro kit for taking ie. breathalyser, gb sticker, etc I'll be going from dover to Calais then to Germany anything els I'm going to need ?
I've been twice, one of the best places I have ever been in the world. Cannot explain in words what the place is like. I have driven my own car round and also rented a car. Rent4ring is run by some English guys so if your after renting a car go there they are spot on. If your taking your own car on just go steady n have fun. Yes u will need all the breathalyser ect. As u will be driving through France. Look online it will tell u everything u need. Get all the stuff off ebay as it's less than half price as in the shops! Be careful on the motorways over there as well as the speed limit drops where there are junctions....n they tend to catch u with speed guns!!! Oh n have fun on the autobahn
Thanks I'll get it all ordered next week taking my car but my mate is going to passenger and is thinking of renting a car from there thanks for the heads up on motorways I'll be taking my time anyways same with on the track I'll just drive to my own abilities don't wanna damage my car prob cry if I even got a scratch on it lol really excited for going now had it booked for few months
