Number plate lights are out, how do I get them back on ?

I tried to install leds for the number plate lights , they did work but not for long, (I have found many threds about this) Put new standard bulbs in and I get a bulb error and no lights. How do I get them working again, I understand that there is nothing a simple as a fuse - thats progress for you.
Any tips

have you checked the bulb holders and contacting ok with the brass contacts in the boot lid?.
If not try removing them and giving the contacts a clean as mine were grubby before i fitted my LED ones..

Probably needs a reset tbh with vcds, but try disconnecting battery, fit bulbs then reconnect.

You will get steering light up, but this will go after a short drive.
