well went out in the car tonight, driving along, hit a pot hole, then there was a banging / knocking and a burning rubber smell coming from the engine bay! quickly knocked the car off and got it recovered by the aa to my prents house a few miles away, me and my dad then had a look at the damage, we removed the air box intake and engine cover to get a closer look, we found the alternator belt lying loose at the front of the engine so pulled that out, then had a look at it, am assuming that the belt should be around 20mm wide but it was closer to 15mm wide!! so while having a look for the rest of it we noticed some broken pices of plastic lying at the bottom ontop of the bumper, then i seen the rest of the alternator belt but it was shredded to bits and sticking out of the timing belt cover!!! and i couldnt pull it out!! to me this isnt looking good!! yhe car is a 2.5v6 tdi 163bhp. any ideas what might have gone wrong? what are these engines like if the timing belt has skipped a tooth??? cheers for any info! the garage that replaced the timing belt at 81k will be getting a call tomorrow as the car only has 84k on it now!! i dont think i will buy another audi off a vauxhall dalership and let them do the cam belt again!!!!!!!!!
