I need some help or advice, recently bought an Audi A4 Avant 1.9 TDI 125,000 on clock and it is a 2005 from auction (I know lol). It is the BKE engine and it is blowing exhaust gas through the expansion tank and pressurising. went up a steep hill, temp warning came on, released pressure and all seemed fine, went back down the steep hill and white smoke coming out of the exhaust also intermittently smokes blue. If it is the EGR cooler then it is an easy fix, if it is the head gasket which was done in march last year, what heads ll fit the block other than the BKE with out too much hassle?
I just want a good strong reliable engine to drop in and enjoy so any help and pointers welcome. Diesels are new to me and I lack diesel knowledge, my knowledge is with to Honda Preludes.

What engine or what head will be a simple plug and play? I would love the PD 130 from a golf, but I read it is a hard job.

Thanks

If it's head gasket (which it probably is) then I would just re-do what you've got, head gaskets don't really go on these so maybe there is a problem from when it was done previously? Get the head pressure tested when it's off, and only use genuine parts on the re-build

Thank you for your reply, was absolutely gutted when I found problems. Been aching for one of these for a while. I will buy a genuine Audi HG and stretch bolts.

I also have a misfire on Cyl 1 which I assumed to be the injector loom as they are a common fault, so my next question will be if the injectors need coding if replaced. How easy are they to clean? The fuel filter I took off was disintegrating and I suspect some bits have got into the injector. I have just been and booked the car into my mates garage next week.

So far I have done fuel filter, changed the injector loom with genuine OEM, rear discs and pads, tightened up the EGR as it was loose and losing all its boost putting it into limp mode, luckily another mate has a code reader and he cleared all the stored code and it brought up the misfire on Cyl 1.

Other than the head work I have to fix the sender unit for fuel and change the rear wiper motor, all common niggles from what I have read.

Is the BKE a good engine or one I should of dodged?

Maybe check the balance shaft oil pump for wear?
