No temp guage / hot air

Hey, wee problem on my 1999 A3 1.8t sport (with climate control).

The temp guage decided to pack in (not moving) and the climate control is not blowing warm air....

any ideas? thermostat?? If so, how easy is it to change?

Sounds more like water pump. Look in the header tank with the engine running and if water pump is ok then you should see water coming out of the return pipe. Also small black floating bits in header tank mean broken water pump, although you don't always get these

If the water pump was broke wouldnt that lead to overheating? not the other way around.

My first thought was the thermostat was stuck open so the engine would not heat up properly.
