No more manual 2.0 petrols.

This will either kill or promote the value of the manuals that are already here.My thoughts are if the manual box is discontinued its because its not been as popular as the autos and will affect their values.You know how its goes on trade ins err "sorry sir the autos are the ones that sell with the A4 no one wants a manual"
Wonder what will happen with the next Q3 (my likely next choice)regarding autos /manuals.

In the past I would never have bought an auto on the grounds that I needed to "keep my hand in" to a certain extent.

But then two things happened, roads got busier and autos got much better. My S-Tronic A4 is so good I'm not sure I'll ever go for a manual car again. Why make your life harder than it needs to be ? Especially if you commute through the daily rush hour nightmare.

I think manual cars (except perhaps sports cars) probably won't be around for that much longer. In terms of value though I think there are probably plenty of old schoolers who wouldn't consider an auto. As time goes on the number of them will decline though.

Had my first auto Audi about 10 years ago, and honestly haven't looked back since.

The reality is that in todays fuel economy driven car sales world, auto boxes are becoming much more efficient (and effortless) at changing gears than humans are.

Anyway, in 30 years we will all be driving around in electric motor driven cars, which are gearbox-less

I always thought that automatic gearboxes were the devil's spawn and never purchase a car with one and would aways stick to manual. Then I got older, driving in traffic became a pain - literally, and autonomous gizmos started. Not looked back since and the stronic is so good.
However I test drove the new fiesta the other day and realised what I was missing as the gearbox in that was so sweet and precise. Perhaps it is just audi's and that they don't make manual gearboxes as good as any other manufacturer. If my stronic ever went wrong, and the warranty wasn't there, the cost of a replacement box probably doesn't bear thinking about.
Still I wouldn't swop it, there is something about an A4 and a automatic that seems just right for the car...

It's worth noting that not all autos are equal either.

I'm currently abroad driving a Citroen C4 Cactus which apart from being extremely ugly must also have the worst automatic gearbox on the face of the earth. The gear changes are about as subtle as a heard of stampeding buffalo.

So it really depends on the manufacturer you buy from too. If I ever chose to buy a Citroen - I won't - then I wouldn't touch the autos with a barge pole.

I jumped from an S4 to a manual A4 on Monday. My last 5 cars were all auto, but had no drama adapting when needed to a manual, I did feel that the manual A4 centre console isn't nicely set out, the controller feels too far back and un-natural to use, maybe I'm just use to resting my hand on the auto shifter when controlling it.

Auto is the way forward, but as mentioned above, not all auto's are the same.

Yet you can still get the A5 2.0 petrol in manual! The s-tronic is good, but it worries me when it's out of warranty = expensive to repair. Even a service on it is expensive, when you consider it's on top of the normal yearly service.

Audi recently offered me a stupidly low price for my manual S3 (£1,000 less than we buy any car), when I questioned it he said "It's the wrong colour, it's a 3 door and it's manual...people want auto and more doors". Then over the weekend I visited a specialist high performance car showroom, I spoke to the sales guy in there and mentioned what Audi had said, he laughed and said "Hot hatches are meant to be 3 door, black is always popular and manual is for enthusiast...yes if it were a s-line 5 door/family car they would want auto, but I could sell your car week in week out"! And made me an offer there and then of £1,500 above the Audi offer.

Funny old thing, I had a 3 door manual A3 (granted not an S3) but Audi low balled and were about £750 less than we buy any car. Ended up selling privately for more than either.

I'm not sure it has much to do with manual or auto, they will find a reason to give you a rubbish offer.

Indeed, I spoke to a lease company a few weeks back and he said that they are hearing from a lot of people that Audi are offering low px prices, which is good for them as people are selling privately and then leasing direct from them. Oh I forgot to say, my car in the wrong colour, with the wrong amount of doors and wrong gearbox.....they had exactly the same car on their website for £6k more than they were offering me for mine!

It is a 2.0 TFSI 190 S-Tronic you have? If so, how do you rate it and what's the MPG like? Possibility considering one for a new A4 order I'm about to sign up to. Thanks.

Yes it is, I really like the engine, smooth and refined with enough power and torque for my purposes. MPG is around 46 on a run, but not driving economically by any stretch of the imagination, and 30-32mpg around town, although I can get the manufacturers figures if I try very hard...
