Nico Rosberg retires: World champion quits Formula 1

World champion Nico Rosberg has announced he has retired from Formula 1 with immediate effect.

The 31-year-old German won his first world title on Sunday, beating Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton by finishing second in the final race in Abu Dhabi.

"I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right," Rosberg said.

Rosberg won nine of this season's 21 grands prix, beating three-time champion Hamilton by five points.

"For 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my 'one thing' to become Formula 1 world champion," he added.

"Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target. And now I've made it."

The son of Finland's 1982 world champion Keke, Rosberg made his F1 debut for Williams at the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2006, finishing seventh.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said the news took him "completely by surprise".

"This is a brave decision by Nico and a testament to the strength of his character," he added.

"The clarity of his judgement meant I accepted his decision straight away when he told me."

I would think he has achieved what he wanted this year , and also he will be ****** off with what Lewis did in the final race and others and no doubt Toto et al will let him away with it ..
    My opinion only .

WTF! Perhaps they "engineered" a win for him this year then if they knew he would retire ;)

Probably a wise move, I suspect he thinks that the odds of retaining it are not in his favour. Better to go out on a high with his health intact and a very large wedge in his back pocket instead of being pushed to the edge for another year.

I think he made his decision after testing the 2017 Merc a month or so ago. He complained of the higher Gs driving the new car with the new regs. Higher speed, more downforce, faster cornering = bigger muscles and more stress on the body. He needed two days rest after it. I think he thought I'm not putting my body through that, I'm off to be a daddy! He's a multimillionaire, wants into driver management and lives in the best place in the world to achieve that. Who knows, he may take over managing Hamilton!!
Now the battle for the seat......Alonso or Vettel??

At 31-years of age - with all of the above - to sell ice-cream in Ibiza with wife Vivian and daughter Alaia, why wouldn't you?

And left behind at Mercedes [IMG]

OK, here's the deal: Valtteri Bottas to Mercedes; Valtteri is a tough fighter and in the same car as Hamilton, interesting: and Valtteri is managed by Toto Wolff.

Now, replace Valtteri at Williams with Pascal Wehrlein, also managed by Toto Wolff.

And reduce the cost of Mercedes engines to Williams - they have been complaining of the £/$/€ costs - and you have a deal.

And then maybe Alonso to Williams... [IMG]

That doesn't help Pascal Wehrlein at all - to McLaren with a Honda motor - neither does it help Mercedes with Wehrlein a Mercedes development driver: and the only person who "would" have enjoyed the personal battle between Alonso and Hamilton rejoined would have been Ron Dennis: interesting but my bet and I've been mulling it over all morning remains with Bottas to Mercedes.

With Force India finishing in front of Williams in 2016 then Williams need to reduce costs for 2017:

The Constructors Championship is where the £/$/€ is ALL important; as we have seen with Red Bull and Torro Rosso drivers can and are replaced very easily.

As we have seen in the past, contracts mean little in F1. Anything is possible and I am quite looking forward to finding out who is going to be Hamilton's team mate next year.

    Hopefully they will not disappoint...

I reckon they'll go with Bottas - even though his wet weather confidence is next to none presently, it's bound to improve once Hamilton shows him what the car's capable of! but as is, he's just not a wet weather kinda guy.
