One of em will probably be the ‘Liftback’ version of the A3. Which as there is already the Q2 and Q3’s I really don’t understand.

Edit: I don’t mean liftback, I mean Allroad or cityhopper

It does look a bit sorry for itself with that droopy nose, like it feels a bit insecure and would rather stare at its feet than look you in the straight in the eye. Maybe it has social media anxiety like a lot of the young yins these days, lol.

Slightly off topic but I've just spent a couple of days with the new A1 and it has concerned me as I'm worried at the direction Audi are heading with their new cars, most importantly the upcoming A3. I know it's all been said before, but I thought I'd add my two cents.

Firstly, I was expecting the interior to be subpar quality going off other people's reactions to it and my first impression upon getting in the car was wow... Pretty much everything you touch is HORRIBLE plastic, the trim inlays and everything. The only thing which wasn't plastic was on top of the dash. I also found a few things which didn't work properly, such as air vents not staying in place. Another gripe was that the driver side air vents can't be adjusted from side to side! I also found a few bugs with the infotainment system, one of which meant I had to factory reset the system to get the volume to work!

I do like the exterior styling, and so do a lot of people as I got a few positive comments and looks. I know the quality of the car is bad due to of the cost for the A1 being invested in the technology of the car, but I think it was all wasted. The touch screen is horrible, I know it has haptic feedback bla bla bla but when driving along UK roads I found it impossible to hit any of the buttons accurately, and this is coming from someone in their 20's... Also, the screen is an absolute fingerprint magnet. The best part of the experience was using apple car play, which Audi have had for a while now, and personally I think that's all it needs to keep the car current. The A1 was disappointing for me sadly, and my expectations were not very high to begin with. One thing which I should mention is that the 1.5 TFSI engine is amazing (I had manual), I managed to get 45mpg with a heavy right foot and 55mpg even with the car still in the dynamic engine setting, so props to VW group for that.

To summarise, if the overall design of the A3 is anything like the new A1 I think Audi will be making a huge mistake, I already think they are cheapening out somewhat with the S branding on the seats, etc across the S Line and S3. I'd like to know what other people's priorities are, maybe interior quality is only important for the vocal minority.

Apologies for the wall of text, have some pictures I took of the A1.

Great little review. What trim model did you have? With my experience of the Q2, most trim models are pretty poor and the plastic is really visible in anything other than S-Line trim. The interior does feel cheap. However, if you put a Q2 with extended leather/trim pack next to a normal one, then the quality is a completely different story. It seems a similar case to the A1 perhaps? Perhaps this is the angle Audi are going towards? Spend more for more quality now? lower trim, lower price equals lower quality!

Thanks mate. I was in the sport, but I sat in the S Line in the show room and it was exactly the same bar the headlining, not sure on the options it had though. I did have a Q2 for a brief period earlier in the year and a prefer it to the A1, feels like a tall A3.

@Kayobong - interesting post and review. Thank you.

Not been inside a new A1 in the flesh but not a fan of the new look virtual cockpit. Overall outside look is pretty good, apart from the Aero chocolate bar style bar above the grille.

I forgot to talk about that. The virtual cockpit was pointless as the car did not come with satilite navigation so the dials could not be changed whatsoever, it was exactly as functional as the old DIS.

I completely agree with your summation/review of the A1 apart from one point the exterior styling l just dont like it at all no matter what model designation it's in l have seen them all,its a tad ungainly from most angles and Poe nosed, but worst of all is the rear bumper which has the similar design dilemma as the new civic with the rear bumper looking like the front one and add the fact only the mega expensive 200bhp variants are the ones with a exhaust pipe
If you dont like a car then you just dont buy simple as that

I do agree with you on the rear, I think it looks better on the competition model with the dual exhausts but still not much of a fan. I like the direct front profile, and I personally think white is the best colour for the car also.

Quite, all cars will have some resemblance to each other anyway, as trends and fashions come and go.
Plus they have to have four wheels, windows and an engine anyway, ;-)
    Non ev of course....

Not a bad deal, considering it is all in
I see Mini offering 0% on all models at the moment (apparently). But would be big deposit and over 24 months. But not bad if you want to own as opposed borrowing.

Have a loan M40d as mine went in for rattle. Does deliver power but very different to mine, I am very glad I stuck with the 3.0 straight 6 petrol

Hectic colour leather on the loan car, i like, the wife hates

Hmmm not keen on the red tbh. Had an email from Mini about that, checked out the extended warranty a few weeks back for a JCW after 3 years old, came back at over £855 per year

Think when this goes back I'll look at a lease with everything in, at least you know where you are. I asked the saleswoman in Audi if they do lease deals the last time I spoke to her! God it was like it was top secret and she didn't want to talk about it. She just said "Yes but we can't recommend those", to which I said "Well do you have someone here that sorts them out?", "Yes 'said his name' is here Monday to Friday" looking all cagey and then she changed the subject!!! it was very odd.

Downsizing to non Audi/BMW etc. isn't really working out that much cheaper tbh!

Saw this just before as well, again all in no worries...if I could get rid of mine now I'd go for this:

As mentioned before. The new Golf should have been released for sale this year. However VW have hit technical issues which has resulted in the Golf being delayed till 2020. Give the A3 is a Golf, this has been delayed too. Both with the same technical issues, and the fact the Golf is always released before the A3.

Given that neither will probably see a car show this year, you're looking at early next year (at best) for the release, which means basic models of the Golf being available to buy from mid 2020, and A3 probably a few months after that. Any S3 variant is probably now unlikely till late 2021 or even 2022.

I would also suspect the whole WLTP thing has pushed back the Golf / A3 due to the VW group getting their knickers in a twist over it all. And seemingly being the slowest to react.

Leasing is a much better way of “budgeting”

The golf is being showcased in a stand-alone event next month mate, so I would have thought it will be available for sale around March?

I had the 200bhp S-Line A1 this weekend and it was very enjoyable, great sound and looked great from the outside albeit very plasticy looking Grill.
the interior scratchy plastics do look a bit cheapy but still okay i think.
It's my second longer run in one and i found the S-line seats it had to be to small on the sides with too little support.
The Screen looks a mess after touching it twice let alone writing an Address onto it for the Nav System. The Virtual cockpit is nice which i don't have on my A3 at the moment. It had 17" Alloys on it which looked far too small.
It's fun to drive with the engine, like the S1 really with a quieter Sound to it.
Still a lot of money though about 40.000 Euros specced out as i like it.
The Edition One looks better but in Grey it can only be had with the Bronze wheels which i am not too keen on.
I think we will wait for the new A3 which my Rep said will be available to order in Spring next year.

The new a3 will have very similar cabin to new A1 as seen on the spy shots. A1 interior looked really cheap and reminded me of a plastic Seat.

You do realise they've disguised the dash by fitting a plastic cover. They aren't stupid enough to give away interior design....

Yes, but the round vents are gone and judging by a1, and Q3 interior it will be most likely mirrored in new A3. Just guessing

We can only speculate at the moment, but yes I am sure the round vents are gone and they will resemble the ones in the Q3. The interior of the current A3 is begining to look a little dated these days anyway...

It is a bit dated but the VC still gets a load of attention. I think its all subjective and the ability to think/see its dated only really applies to real car enthusiasts. Mates at work are amazed by my Q2 interior which is basically the same as A3.

You see to us on here that looks great. To the young ins there’s not enough touch screens and tablets slapped everywhere for them to poke at and leave greasy paw prints. That’s why some folk thinks the 8v is a bit dated.

The Fl interior is not dated.....it is classy and the dash will not look dated as many others will, with stuck on Ipods and a myriad of touch screens, which will take many touches to get to a screen to change simple control items. I love knobs and buttons, simple but very effective.
