Hey everyone,
Just currently going through getting my licence at the moment and hoping to buy a B6 Avant for my first car will be going for a 3.0 Quattro

Any advice?

I can afford the insurance on it that isn't a problem

My brother had a 1lt micra for his first car .. The car was 700 quid and cost him 2 grand to insure it .. And your wanting a 3lt its gonna cost you loads

I'm 22 and I looked at a 1 litre micra and yeah its going to cost me 2k but the Audi will cost me 2.5k

Will do why have a micra when you can have an Audi? The 1.8 turbo also is 3.7k for insurance

Fair play to ya bud, aiming high for your first car, as other have said insurance will cost as mush as the car.

Dont know much about the 3.0 petrol me self, but i have heard of rattly cams, part from that, its all the usual signs, suspension arms, rust on the wings

Why not get a 1.9TDI avant (nice low insurance profile) and get something else in a year or two for the fun driving? Better yet, gen an A6 Avant... my insurance halved when I went from my 12yr old B6 TDI saloon to my new C7 supercharged petrol avant.... even though the latter was worth >£50k more!

The 3.0 petrols aren't performance monsters and you'll be paying through the nose for petrol, maintenance and insurance....

Well the 3.0 I was looking at has been sold before I could get it,
The reason I had picked it was because insurance seems cheaper than the 1.8 and I might have another look in to a diesel.

These are some of my insurance quotes for various different A4s and a couple of others

Insurance is always a nightmare, doesnt seem long ago when I had to insure my 1.25 Fiesta for the price of £2k.

A friend of mine at the time managed to insure a B5 Passat 1.8T for less than a grand just after passing his test.

I also found that insuring rarer quicker cars was cheaper, I managed to insure my Ibiza Cupra 1.8T for £50 more than my Fiesta Zetec S at the time.

To be honest I've been quoted £500 for a 62 Mk1 Ford Cortina but I need something reliable first.

Yeah sorry I went abit off topic there :)

Thought I would update this, I bought my Audi A4 Avant B6 3.0 Quattro had it for the past 2 weeks and I am loving it :)

Keeing it simnple.. Im inclined to agree with Bahnstormer77.

Its your 1st car. No need to go crazy yet. I had a little dinky Polo 1.3 as a first and built up my no claims with it.

Good luck in your decision making

I understand that I did go way over the bar for a first car but I'm just not a fan of crappy little hatchbacks

I had a look in to the map and it doesn't seem worth it for an extra 15 hp at the moment I just want to run through and replace a few warn parts EG brake lines, springs and bushings as the car spent half its life up in Scotland
The mileage is 143k

How much is it for the remap on a 3.0? Ones that I have found have been £400+

The sensible side of me would say/ask..

''You're planning on getting a big boy 3.0 avant for a first car?!'' The running costs will be too much for a 1st time driver.

But...

The car driver in me would say..

''Go for it ESPECIALLY as Paul has said above..The sound of a de-catted 3.0 audi B6 WITH a remap is so nice''

Angel or Devil situation my friend..

Haha just read this thread

Why can't new drivers just buy something to smaller to start with, especially younger lads

Why go straight for a 3.0 Audi or a scoring? Yeah it's only a little more on insurance but it's still over 2k weather you can afford it or not

This is how young male drivers are slated in the press and punished with high premiums because their choose to drive cars out of their capabilities

Should be restricted like motorbikes for the first few years imo

But if you can afford it crack on mate, the b6 is a lovely piece of kit

Other than that rant over lol

What has happened to insurance lol?!
I insured my first car at 17 (1.4 Pug 106) for £700 then it dropped to £450 at 18. My second car (08 fiesta zetec S 1.6) for £550 still at 18. Now my B6 1.9TDi is at £540!

If I was quoted over 2k for insurance at 18 I wouldn't of bothered. F**k that springs to mind haha

When I was 17 I had a boring Mk3 escort and the insurance was a weeks wages at the time and 10% of the car value. Things have definitely changed!! My second car, after 6 months was a 2.8I Ghia X Granada, which though it was a comfy old man's car, it went like stink compared to my mate's boy racer mobiles. Insurance was a lot cheaper too. After that, I went for big engined old men's cars and always found insurance cheaper then the usual young-scrote-mobiles.

So go on then- how much was the insurance?

How can you be new to b6's if you don't own one ???

Just read the posts he did buy one ... Oops sorry lobster .. Guess he's a b6 owner after all .. Would love to know what he pays for insurance

I'm "Outside the acceptance criteria" with most insurers at age 19. Even with a years no claim bonus, my insurance has gone from about €1750 to over €2100 this year thanks to so many people in Ireland claiming for whiplash. I'm only a named driver on the car too. My dad still adds about €450-500 onto the cost, but its still cheaper than just insuring myself. One company quoted me €10,415 for insurance in my own name with nobody else allowed to drive my car. If I add my dad to that, it cuts the cost down a few grand, but its still cheaper to have have take out a policy with me on it than me take one out with him on it. Regardless of which way I do it, its the same cover but just at a different price. I can still have exactly the same cover as a named driver, I just earn a slightly lower no claims bonus.

Oh, I forgot to mention for reference, my A4 is a 1.9tdi Quattro Sport (having sport in the name is like an unfortunate tax).

One of the few advantages of getting old is cheap car insurance. B6 1.8T £160 fully comp - protected no claims.

Another year and a half and my insurance company will outright refuse my car, regardless of who wants to insure it, because its too old. 15 years old is apparently too old now. Tell that to my dads 86' Corolla DX.

Sorry guys, didn't realise this thread had continued but yeah I'm currently paying £3,500 for my insurance but in my eyes its worth it. I'm sure we all know them days of trying to squeeze in to your mates new hatchback plus I'm 6ft 1

Also forgot to mention the reason why its £1000 higher than the quotes I put up and that is I also got hit by the "sport" tax didn't realise it had the sport package on it

I'm 6ft 2 or 3. I've got my seat pushed back only about 1-2 inches from the back. I don't think I'd be too comfortable in something small. I was just about able to cram myself into my mates old Fiesta. There isn't a hope I could comfortably work the pedals in it. The insurance cost might sting for a few years, but its worth it.
