Welcome to ASN. Weekends are usually quiet on here so be patient. Worth using the forum search facility as there's bound to be a cab owner whose had the same problem.

thanks
yeah i have done a search and tried cleaning the motor with some fine sand paper liked the guide so still stuck with what to do next dont know if its the roof postion sensor or the motor is knackered thanks again

You disconnect battery and reconnect also check fuse and relay

A scan will help determine if its a micro switch issue or similar. Most roof issues are micro switch related :)

Does the roof top latch mechanism unhook (x2 hooks) from above the sun visor areas both sides when you drop it ? Ive just completely overhauled one of these on an 02' plate.

When you get the diagnostics on it (VCDS) here is a link to the most useful 'map' telling you what positions the roof switches should be in for open or closed state of the roof - ''I'' being on ''O'' off. In short, the ECU for the roof requires each of the switch positions to be correct in order for the next sequence to occur and as you have probably realised, there are numours steps involved from the windows dropping, to the hood releasing at the front and so on..

Thanks

Comparing that map I hve linked is the best way to figure out your problem but until u get that far and obtain diagnostics, I will ask if there is a motor spinning sound when roof shut and you press button to open hood. The sound will eminate from where you put the emergency key Middle top to close hood. You may also see a spindle moving but nothing happening ? This is one problem area with the motor spindle wearing and slipping out of its linkage, but there is a repair kit availabe from vag.

i have had a look and when i press the roof down button i can hear a click but only happens once ,
and the spindle does`nt move at all
is it a main dealer job for diagnositics?

where are you, plenty of ppl on here can help with diagnostic check as many of us have vcds system.

Im not sure that the way you did the reset is right, this is correct way.
Unlock roof, fold down and lock rear panel THEN hold switch upwards(as if opening the roof) turn ignition on for 20 seconds, turn ignition off and release button. Put roof back up and lock THEN hold roof switch down (as if closing) turn ignition on for 20 seconds , turn ignition off then release switch.

This is the correct way to line up sensors an reset roof module.

Tried this and still nothing so maybe motor packed up , just waiting on a guy close to me to help with dianotics to find any error code to detemine whats wrong
thanks jay

I had this same issue. Your best bet is to diagnose otherwise you will have to check all window motors to include door lock mechanisms. I had one out and the whole car acted funny. Just a suggestion but hopefully you will get it diagnosed.

Have you checked this? they are very prone to breaking due to cheap plastic. The cable pops out of its guide and you will only hear a click or two.

no not checked this .
where is this on the car
thanks jay
It will be inside the door you will need to take the door panel off and pull the foam/moisture barrier back and it is on the metal bracket running up . I'll take a picture for u to show you. Just give me a few. I'm in the states so time difference; )

K I hope your mechanically inclined lol . There is a cable that runs on the back of this where you can't see it. To check to see if yours came out you will need to temporarily plug your window up and be careful but you can put some gloves on and see if you feel a notch moving any where up and down on there but your window won't move just clicks. If so you can replace the green part only but it's tricky. It took me 15 minutes. There is a possibility that your regulator is completely shot in that case it's a nightmare job but doable. Lmk what you find out. Cheers!

right guys had the car scanned last night and these were the faults that the scanner threw up,
big thanks to js3 for dianosting

Ok , you need to open the roof Manually and the boot flap, fold the roof into the boot space, you will then see a row of pozzy drive screws which are along the front edge of the inside of the roof. Under these screws is the motor and switch , remove the screws and the plastic cover. Now you can see the motor with 2 arms on it.First switch ignition on and hold the open roof button. What happens is the gear in the center of the motor which drives the arms to release the catches sometimes disengages (especially if you have put the manual tool in it) and does not drop back into its meshing position. If that does not work you have to take the motor off and the arms which are on a ball and socket configuration, turn the motor upside down and you will see the main mechanism (looks like a circle with cutouts at each end )whats happened is that circle has not turned far enough and hit the microswitch , so you need to hold the motor in your hand whilst someone presses the switch to the open roof position, you should see the circle mechanism move to its correct position, once that has happened put it all back together, reset the roof how i said before and all should be good.

I will pm you my mobile in case its all a bit much and i'll talk you through it, before doing all above get a torch and shine it up into where the manually key goes and see if you can see if gear has disengaged, i bet it has, its very common.

hi darran have done another manual reset and then unlocked the roof with the key then used the roof switch to fully open the roof and this seems to have worked , the roof now locks and unlocks and go`s up and down like it should ,
thanks for the replys and help cheers jay

Another one to watch is the "top box" error. When looking into the boot, there is a hidden microswitch at the very bottom so when the storage system is fully lowered which tells the system there is space for roof to fold into. After time the topbox system can get worn and the switch doesn't always engage. Very now and then I have to tap the underside of the lid so it drops fully down :)

Cheers will keep an eye on that one thanks
