So with the government introducing new tax rates, could this be the end of people buying new?

Second hand certainly seems more attractive now, and it would seem based on Audi lead times that any car ordered in December onwards may well fall victim of these increases.

Do we think dealers will offer deals to reduce to the hit?

To be honest mate if that article is anywhere near the actual tax price it isn't going to put people off..Who would be worried about paying out £140 - £310 for road tax when they are spending such a large amount for their cars?? It won't put me off:shrug:

It's only 450 for the first 5 years for cars over 40k. That will be list price not discounted. Might stop people ordering lots of options or may make Audi package options like in America. The other side of the coin is that big cars will only cost £140 to tax when they get older. There must be a lot of cars getting scrapped now as it is too costly to keep them on the road so this may help.

I can't see it having much effect long term. Folk will just accept that if they spend more than £40k on a car there's more tax to pay. I expect manufacturers will do option bundles more though. S3 Titanium X anyone?

Transition will be fun though. So you walk into a VAG dealer in November this year to order a car for March delivery and then you get the call in February that you won't get your car until May. What then?

Lucky people...in our country, italy, the annual car tax is based only on KW.
258 Euro up to 100 Kw + 3,87 Euro for each Kw over 100 + 20 Euro for each Kw over 185.

The first year you have to pay in addition the tax plate always based on KW, 4,55 Euro x Kw.

Ex. annual tax for an Audi S3 221Kw is 258 Euro + (121 Kw x 3,87 Euro) + (36 Kw x 20 Euro) = 1.446,27 Euro
Plus 1.005 Euro for the first year for the tax plate (221Kw x 4,55 Euro).

The RS3 annual tax is 2.615,9 Euro

The RS6 Performance (445 Kw) annual tax... 6.793,15 Euro.

Wow...that's a lot. From a country who produces some of the world's most exotic and powerful cars, I'm surprised the Government taxes performance cars so heavily.

One day they may actually get car tax right in the UK.

The people and businesses who do huge annual mileage, should pay extortionate tax rates. The rest of us, should not. It should have no bearing on the value of your car as we have already been screwed by VAT at the point of purchase, and what does this figure have to do with your road use? Less than 25% of what is made on average from car tax is actually spent on the upkeep of public property by our ever so gracious government.

It's just another way to increase another tax without providing any improved service at any stage of the process.

George Osborne announces a new road improvement fund with VED car tax paying directly for road repairs
"Every single penny" raised by vehicle excise duty will go into a new road fund to pay exclusively for highways maintenance by the end of the decade. George Osborne revealed the creation of the road fund in his July 8 Budget in one of the biggest reforms to motoring in recent years.
