Iv got the old boat Style nonMF plastic steering wheel, my question is whats the best one to replace it with? Iv got a 54 so its prefacelift would this mean I have a one or two stage bag. Thanks again for your help.

You have a single stage airbag. what you replace it with depends on budget and whether you want the airbag to work..

Id like the airbag to work, even tho iv had the airbag warning light on for about 2 months, need to get round to soldering the under seat connections. my budget is around 250-300

Limited tbh if you dont want to fit an mfsw dual stage version, only really swap it for same with leather tbh, got a pic of current one?

One day I will learn how to add pictures. Sorry for only having a link the only pic i have of my actual wheel are really low res.

You could swap to a 3 spoke single stage or go for dual stage that might not work, your choice

How would i find a three spoke single stage, is it the one from the 8L? or from an 05 8P

Strangely i just spotted what you need sitting on my cooker ! You dont usually see them out this time of year once the frosts start but it looks like this one is trying to keep warm.....

I have never heard about this single stage double stage airbag system??? I was under the impression fitting an 8p2 wheel to an 8p1 car was simple? Just need wheel, airbag, slip ring and module and some coding???

Well fitting an 8p2 wheel to an 8p1 car is simple? Just need wheel, airbag, slip ring and module and some coding............but the airbag probably will not work.

I've got the standard wheel from my 04 car - leather non-MF (but DSG) which I'd sell if any help?

Wow, I have been reading topics about this mod for months and months and have never seen this mentioned anywhere!! Damn, this was next on my list of mods....

Your correct, 8P1's have a single stage air bag, anything newer had a 2 stage one hence why putting a newer style wheel on your 8P1 will cause the air bag to be redundant.

Depends how much you value your face I suppose

Unless you use audi, huh hurrrrmmmmmmmmm :undwech:

Just what he needs then.

Its not completely proved tbh, I've seen one guy who crashed & didnt go of, but I would think with some modification in the wiring then it would work, maybe swap the stages round.

As above tbh, I agree its more than likely it wont work but all comes down to setup/controllers & they have changed even on same version of 8P, I intend to update mine to 05 onwards for dual stage anyway.

Umm, why have I not read this anywhere before!?!

I spent close to £1000 fitting a FBMFSW in my car, and now you're telling me my good looks are at risk if I crash?

I know!!!! Wouldn't this invalidate any insurance?

If jameo84 decides not to get it from you, I'd like to ask what is the price?

Need a leather wheel.

I got Audi to fit my FBMFSW as i had ( and so did they) problems coding the airbag and steering assist. Even they never pointed out that it wouldn't work anyway...lol. I suppose my feeling was that after 30 years on bikes without an airbag....and having owned lots of cars without airbags as well, Corsairs, Cortina's, Capri..MGB etc my teeth will probably fall out due top old age before i knock them out on my new wheel  i have kept the one in the picture so i can swop it back if i sell just to keep my conscience clear for the next owner.

Make me an offer - it's in good condition, the car had done approx 50K miles when it was removed.

Mine was fitted by HazzyDayz who are VAG upgrade specialists - I might drop them an email to see what their take is on this. My concern would be more what the repercussions would be for insurance, rather than what the wheel would do for my youthful good looks...

My attitude is that as it was fitted by a VAG main agent , if the insurance kicked up a fuss i would claim ignorance along the lines.." if you cant trust Audi to fit the right parts who can you trust.." I'm just the ignorant punter..Anyway, i never wear my good looks when i am driving ! I have a special part manic part terrified face i use. Anything over 100mph and i tend to chew the steering wheel anyway ..

All starting to make sense now, lol, how old are you again, those names arent exactly young huh, but unforgettable they're not.

I know a few that would disagree with the specialist part, but guess they have more successes than non, but be interested to hear there take on that email, really would as should really have a disclaimer, I've done a few & not as a business & advised of this pitfull possibly occurring, I dont need someone coming back to me saying it doesnt work when they've been warned it might not.

TBH mate you would have a damn good claim there to Pat against audi huh, so leave it in place for now & hope its not a bad crash if you ever are that unfortunate, hope not of course.

In my dealings with them they were extremely knowledgeable, helpful and professional. I honestly can't praise them highly enough.

I provided the wheel - they provided the ECU and slip ring, but I do take your point, if they were aware of a potential issue, they should state.

What basis is this "might not deploy" theory though? Has anybody crashed a pre-facelift with late wheel and not had the bag deploy?

Does anyone know what stage the Golf Mk5 airbag system is and whether you could get a MK5 wheel to fit an A3 8p1 (with old style wheel) ??

Thanks Ew, always the ****** test bed huh

Well it seems to me that as the plugs and sockets are the same and our sockets have 2 wires and the 2 stage bag has 4 wires...we just need to see which 2 wires work the stage 2 bit and wire them too our plugs....
now..off you go nige, quick as you can, theres a good chap :)

I can safely say that there would be some serious beer money in it for you if you could get it to work!:beerchug:

Yes I was thinking the same tbh that it must work on 1 of the stages, that was my 1st plan, but 2nd plan involved chnaging of parts, iirc the airbag controller is an 84pin connector for single stage & dual stage is 72pin, when I get chance I'll check.
