New number plates... 'Seal' underneath?

I need to put my new plates on the motor today, and I need to take off the old sticky pad residue.

I'll do that with tar remover to ensure a clean surface for my new pads to stick to, but I'm just wondering if I can seal the paintwork under the plates first? (Ie. will the pads stick to that or not)

Hi m8 I did mine last month.
Tar remover takes off the old sticky pads with ease.
I wiped white spirit after this to clean the surface and dried it.
I wouldn't bother sealing it tbh.
No problems with sticking then, as I changed my plates a week after for different style and it took a hell of a pull to get the other one lol.
