This isn't a ploy, it's genuine and i've added my number to the ex-directory (linky at bottom of page) have a read.....

Maybe you have heard about this but early next week all UK mobiles will be on a directory which will mean that anyone will be able to access the numbers. It is easy to unsubscribe but it must be done before the beginning of next week to make sure that you are ex directory. We have all unsubscribed and you may want to suggest it to all your friends and family who have UK mobiles or they could be swamped by unsolicited messages and calls. Removal is recommended by the BBC – see link below.

Just done this myself. Double checked it wasn’t a scam and it is actually on the bbc website recommending to do this.

The Directory of Mobile Phone numbers goes live next week.
All numbers including those belonging to children will be open to cold calling and the general abuse that less scrupulous telesales people subject us too.

To remove your number go here. (you need your mobile phone with you to do this, they text you a code)

You can remove your number from this list, and tell all your friends - especially those with children who have mobile phones. I personally believe my mobile number is private and I should be able to chose who I give it to - none of us agreed to this when we signed our mobile phone contracts.

Just for your info the mobile phone companies are not the ones that supplied the numbers to this company. They got them from other companies that you will have given your number to when registering to a site for example. "Only" about a 3rd of mobiles in this country are on it.

I agree though, shouldn't have been allowed to happen.

The good news is they're not allowed to give numbers out, you can only be connected to a number through that company and they charge you for it.

EDIT: Just taken myself of the list (they've moved the page: http://www.118800.co.uk/removeme/remove.html) but they had me registered at my dad's house. Weird as the only things I have ever registered that address for are Honda and Audi, hmmm

Staz, the same people who give their bank details to internet offers of making them rich....

I've never given my mobile number out to anyone, not even to my amenity suplliers etc. However, I still have recently started receiving texts inviting me to clear my debts or take out a loan. I can only summise that it is, in fact, my mobile supplier that has sold the number

Anyways, I've utilised this opportunity and removed both mine and the OH's numbers ;)

I have only given Audi and Honda my number through taking test drives and getting cars serviced etc. My phone isn't registered at my dad's and nor are any bank cards or anything.

You mst have given it out at some point mate. Besides there's no way your phone company gave it out, they're not allowed to!

Takes the p** why should they be allowed to do this !!!

i get enough junk email and calls on my blackberry as it is

rant over :motz:

Oooh where do I go for this??
:tumble:

Let me show you a magic trick.
Give me your account number, sort code and mothers maiden name and I will turn your current account into a **** load of internet porn :icon_thumright:

Haha :eyebrows:

I signed up to this today too. I searched for myself and it said it had my number, but I wasn't prepared to pay to see if it was bluffing or not!

Nope.....when I said never, I meant never. Let me give you my number and we can talk about it some more :lmfao:

I've had the same number for the past 13 years and only ever give out my home number.....which I never get cold calls on!!

If it's correct that the phone companies aren't allowed to give out the number then I can only assume that some scandalous blighter at the company has illegally sold numbers (which I'm hoping wouldn't happen) or perhaps someone, somewhere, has inadvertantly input/given their own number perhaps with a couple of digits wrong.........I'll be inclined to go along with the latter.
