Hello all,

A while ago the S3 went away (although I still stalked the site everyday :p). But, I'm back with another 20vt...didn't take me long. But this time in the body of a mk1 - pics below.

Got a question about the vac lines though. At the moment there is a boost gause in the cabin, and I'm not sure about the way it's been plumbed at the moment (in fact, all the gauges need sorting out along with a few other bits...anyway). It's been t-pieced into the FPR line (which runes from the bottom of the inlet mani) and that same line t-pieced again for the DV. Basically, I'm not sure if this is the best way to be doing it - not so happy with taking a t-piece off the FPR!

The "large" outlet on the underside of the inlet mani has been blocked off with hose / bolt / jubilee combo. Any adivce?

Drove her about 5 hours back home and all was well - but I'm planning on a visit to Badger5 to make sure everything is as healthy as it should be!

Thanks!

Its been a while since I've seen a 1.8t engine bay but I'm sure the FPR has a separate line to the inlet mani. I'd T the gauge from the DV which had a nipple under the mani for., what boost are you seeing?

The large nipple is for the PCV system, does it have a catch can? That's normally blocked off for a catch can system.

Hi Gops,

Yeah, I'd give the FPR it's own line too - believe there are two "small" nipples under the inlet mani. 1 I can dedicate to the FPR, the other I can use for DV / Boost Gauge, yeah? I didn't pay attention to the number on the boost gauge actually, I'll check once I get it re-plumbed. Believe 3mm inner if the correct diameter for the tubing?

There isn't a catch can, but the PCV has been changed to vent to atmosphere. I think I'd prefer to install a can (you can see the atmosphere vent in the engine bar picture just about, cylindrical mesh filter has been fitted to the crankcase breather).

Well, a car that is too low and English roads resulted in this…waiting for the RAC now. Lesson learned, and a raising of ride height and shallow sump will follow in due course.

woops indeed - shallow sump and a raise in ride height in the works! This isn't intended to be (remain?) a show car, I'd actually like to be able to drive the thing in the country I live....anyway. Actually, I found today a thread on this very site from about a year ago of the previous owner asking about solutions to his low sump problem...obviously he didn't actually go ahead with any of them... Gives me a month with her off the road to sort out various interior bits before she heads up to you Bill to get a bit of TLC!

Dry sump system would work, but probably very expensive I would imagine.

Yeah, very expensive. I've decided along the shallow sump / raise ride height option

ECS shallow sump kit arrived today from the USA, all looks good and well made! Took some photos of all the bits in the kit in case anyone needs them.

Odd thing is the kit said on the website that the steel section was NOT sealed to the aluminium sump before delivery...but looking at the sealant squeezing out, it certainly looks pre-sealed to me...
