Good Afternoon all,

I'm wondering if i could ask for opinions / advice on my current car and what comes next as my PCP deal ends in June 2021. I have a really nice 2017 Audi A3 Saloon 2 litre (auto) quattro black edition in floret silver. The car is immaculate (apart from some stone chips on the bonnet), and has a lot of extras fitted. The car has Matrix headlights, Soft nappa leather seats, Bang and Olufsen stereo, Tech pack, heated front seats, Virtual cockpit, Rear camera, Parking assist plus (the self parking version which I've never used), Apple Carplay, Folding door mirrors, Interior lighting pack, Extended leather trim inside, Wireless charging.

When I purchased this car some people asked why would I spend so much on the extras when its "only an A3" but I do enjoy technology inside the car and I've always said how the interior of the car looks is just as important to me as the exterior (I spend enough time looking at it).

The PCP ends in July with a lump sum of £15,000 payable. The plan was always to buy the car as its a great car and has all the toys I would like and a great engine, its lovely to drive and looks great. I've looked on Audi's Used website and there are only 2 other A3 Saloon black edition in an 800 mile radius.

Obviously Audi have contacted me and asked what i was thinking in regards to the PCP / car, asking if I was looking at a new car. I've told them that i probably will not be looking at a new A3 Saloon as they only offer the 1.5 litre engine now. I had a 1.5 litre C.O.D A3 sportback before my current A3 and enjoy the larger engine. I don't scream around like a nutter but the extra power is nice.

I started looking around at what other manufacturers have to offer but am not sure. I looked at BMW, I liked the 2 Series Gran Coupe and did start looking at a second hand (Dec 2020) M235i, but when i looked at it in the flesh I just didn't like the shape. I don't like 1 Series BMW's, and tbh i prefer a saloon style car. The Series 3 seems a bit out of my reach. Im really not a fan of the space ship style interior of Mercedes.

Audi have come to me and asked if I have considered the new S3 Saloon.... keeping the 2 litre engine and power (and more!). The new S3 seems to have more "as standard" now and they have only had to add Matrix headlights and a "comfort and sound pack" to bring it up to my A3's spec (sacrificing the auto parking , I've never used it). The S3 would work out £50 a month more than my A3 atm with a £4k deposit. Audi quoted £40,575 for the S3. I've been on CarWow and had a quote from Audi Crawley (same dealer?!?!) for £38,236.

Never owning an S3, I worry about the security side of owning the car, I am a worrier and sometimes see on here that some people have experienced break ins... Do you get much aggro on the roads? I know the colours of the car bring different levels of attention.... I would prob go to Daytona Grey (previous A3 had it and it was lovely when clean) but I do like the Turbo Blue.

So I am trying to decide... do i pay the lump sum on my A3 and keep a very nice car, with all that i would want inside (but out of warranty - if i buy an extended warranty could that be extra money put towards the S3 monthly cost?). Or do I go for a new S3 with the new design inside and out, or could anyone offer another car to look at. I don't really want to go over £40k. I understand that the new S3 isn't everyones cup of tea but I think that's going to be the case no matter what car someone has. We all don't like the same...

I'd appreciate any help / advice... Stay safe all.

It sounds like a lovely car you have at the moment, are you bored with it?
Dealers want to keep you within that pcp cycle because it keeps you in a new car for reasonable money, which sounds appealing, but in reality all your doing is financing the depreciation and interest on it and you end up in a cycle with nothing to show at the end
I would finance the balloon at cheap rates circa 3% apr and extend the warranty.
Buying new sounds like you'll also be in the higher car tax bracket for the first 5 years!

I’d keep your car as you’ve spec’d it to your liking and how often would you really get to recognise the power difference anyway.

Also the FL saloon you have is better looking and better quality than the new car both inside and out!

As above put the balloon on a 3% interest loan and you could bring your monthlies down, get the extended warranty for piece of mind.

Re your concerns over the S3, I moved from PFL A3 sportback to FL S3 saloon, in Daytona grey. It’s not in your face apart from the exhaust note when I put my foot down. I’ve also debadged the rear.

I’ve never had any negative attention, only positive, although that may differ depending on where you live. I’m still surrounded by lots of much nicer cars where I am. I have street parking and park away from my house too, I’d probably worry too much if I was parking it on my drive...

I was in the same position last year (but they never even called and asked what I wanted to do?!?!) Anyway, I still liked the car I had and it was on low miles, so I'd be changing for the sake of it! I put my reg in here https://www.arnoldclark.com/sell-my-car they quoted me more than I owed on it and I couln't find one for sale the same as mine for less than what i owed, so I paid it off and kept it. I then put an Audi extended warranty on it which cost about £300 all components cover for the year....But don't let the currently warranty expire, as they will hit you for double if you do!

As for yours, what miles are you on? You will never get all the options money you paid out back, so it's better that you make use of them yourself for a year or two more, depreciation for the next 1-2 years will be a lot slower than it has been for the first 3 years.

For your new car quotes try this https://www.coast2coastcars.co.uk/car-quote/
Also remember they can make any deal look good, for £10 a month more you can have this, but then the final payment is sky high!

EDIT* For me I'm waiting until I see something that makes me say "Ohhh I like that".

I like the shape/style of this, but it's not coming to the UK, hopefully the Toyota version will. Inside is not Audi quality but I'm looking at the 5 year warranty as standard and bomb proof reliability for long term ownership:

15k loan at 2.8% over 4 years is about 330 a month. Your car would probably still be worth a fair bit after 4 years too, and most likely good for another few years after that. If you like the car then keep it. At least you know how its been treated all its life.

You'd probably make more money by selling it privately after paying the finance settlement fee off
If your getting a little weary of the car....that feeling will only increase
I was in a similar position to yourself and Short listed 2 cars one was too expensive Porsche Boxster 718 once you started adding options...so went and ordered a TTS and l am very content with my decision even though l really like my current car a lot ....drivethedeal have £4500 discount on existing new S3 saloon stock all are launch edition with Matrix headlights,19s etc etc

Missed that post, what colour have you gone for? I knew a while back you'd seen a pre reg or used one but it had been sold.

As stated in above posts.. If your bored with it pay off finance and sell private. Wait for a better deal to come along. From experience don't let Audi tempt you into another pcp with your current car as part ex. They will rob you blind. Even We Buy Any Car will offer more than Audi.
You have a really nice and well spec'd car so you won't have any issues in finding a buyer for it.:icon thumright:

Agree ^^^. When I sold the S3 to buy the A5 Audi offered me the lowest price from anyone, sold it to a specialist sports car place for £1,500 more!

After that pre reg one l seen which was a Launch model with a spec that can't be configured...l then seen a brand new unregistered TTS vorsprung which ticked all the boxes bar the deal l was offered... that was last July l think..then l found out Audi where putting the 320 ps engine in the TTS plus the deal l got off drive the deal it felt like a no brainer so gone for Turbo blue it was going to be Nogaro blue but this option was adding another 3 months on top of the standard 4 month lead time....too long, so l bought the Matrix oled rear tail lights instead build date is March 29th

Sounds nice mate, so expecting delivery around May/June?? So it's the first TTS on the Audi site, not the BE/Vorsprung one you've ordered.

Can't see Nogaro blue, is that the £2,400 option???

Totally agree on Audi robbing you blind, the dealer I bought my S5 from tried telling me that my S3 was worth trading in as part of the ‘deal’ and gave me their best p/x price of £19,800. I tried not to laugh knowing I’d already been offered more than £23k by a sports car dealer. When I told them this they said you’ll never get that price you’ve been offered, it’s much easier to just p/x etc etc, no thanks not for £3k+! Ended up getting just under £24k and the processes wasn’t any more complicated, just had to arrange a lift down to the dealership instead of driving to collect :tearsofjoy:

lol when I went in to sign the paperwork for the new car they said "We just need to check the S3 over" I said what for?, they said "To give you a final price" their faces when I said "Oh I've sold it elsewhere" was a picture :D I then said "I did tell you to keep the deals separate, it's in the email" :p

Then just to rub salt in the wounds I sold the S3 the day before I collected the new car, so I asked for someone to come and collect me and take me back to the dealership and they did :D

But yeah robbing gits on px, they looked at my S3 and said "It's mint" then we went inside and they gave me the px price!!! They had a car the same as mine on their forecourt for £6k more than what they had just offered me for mine! :wtf: I pointed that out and they said "It costs us £2k to prepare a car for sale" (which I don't buy) I even said "you just said it's mint!!!" So even if it did cost £2k they still wanted to make £4k on top of that!

That looks great mate, so you're going Vorsprung!!! wow you don't do things by half :)

Closer the time if you need a buyer for your S3 let me know. When I was looking to sell the A5 a guy contacted me who was miles ahead of everyone with prices, nice guy to chat to as well, so I saved his number for future ref.

Yeah I just don’t get why people would p/x their cars, it’s not exactly much more hassle to sell it to another car dealer (private sales put me off). People that just p/x have more money than sense to me, unless you are just voluntary terminating or the car isn’t worth the final payment etc.

The salesman did admit to me afterwards they struggle to get S and RS stock, and a lot comes straight from auctions rather than p/x. I did nearly say I’m not surprised with the insulting p/x prices you offered but didn’t want to rub salt in the wounds seeing as they wanted my car and I wanted to buy the S5 still :tearsofjoy:

Thank you all for your replies. There is some good and honest advice included in them. I'm definitely not bored with my A3 and it's the first time I've had a car and all that i wanted is there (Saloon shape, engine, extras..). Ive not got in it any when and said "Oh I wish I had...".

I think I've just always hit the 3rd / 4th year and then gone its time for a new car. Audi Crawley have now come back to me and said that they will value my car at £17.6k and with a £4k deposit they will offer the CarWow price and the monthly PCP would be £446. The balloon payment seems high though at £18,700 (not high in regards the value of the car but high as in would I be able / willing to pay that at the end of the PCP).

I think I am leaning towards buying my car as the £4k deposit that we would have to put down on the S3 could go towards the balloon payment on the A3, then there's only £11k to finance and I'm tempted to put that on a two year finance deal at £410 pcm. Then in two years the A3 is completely paid for and I can look at what's about then.

My A3 is a lovely car, and i try to look after it (5 - 6 hour cleaning sessions are normal, god it was cold cleaning it on Friday!), its normally spotless. The only downer is a few stone chips it's got. Other than that friends say it's a lovely car. Would anyone know if there is a recommended body detailer that might be able to help with the stone chips, if I keep the A3 it might be worth spending a bit on this.

The A3 is on an extended warranty atm, ending in July. Any recommendations? Thanks again all.

I know its easy for me to say but I think you'll be making the right decision in keeping it, I've never really been in the pcp trap other than using it simply to do the deal on a used car and then swapping to a loan.
As for warranty, stick with Audi you'll be pleasantly surprised how much an all components cover is as long as you take it out within the final month!
Stone chips.....get a chipex kit for and fill them yourself. I've always had good results with it.

A lot of us have done the same mate! I was in company cars for years changing every 6 months so got used to it, then bought the S3 and after 2.5 years sold it for the A5 coupe, for me it was the worry of being out of warranty and something going wrong! so going new again for piece of mind. But then I saw the prices were going up, spec was coming down, and my mileage was going down!!! Couldn't justify the cost anymore for around 3,000 mile per year, so I bought this and extended the Audi warranty on it for piece of mind, but in reality you'd like to think that a car costing £38k (list) new would be good for at least 50,000 mile?!? I'm just under 10k now after 40 month :D

This is a new shape S3 saloon quote I saw last month as a comparison to what they gave you:

Crikey - buy a car, get someone else to pay the big hit depreciation (with interest) in exchange for mileage and fair wear and tear. This is one of the reasons I don’t do PCP.
Yep £465 pm is ridiculous, not to mention the £6.5k in charges. Cheaper just to get a taxi to where you want to go lol.

Agree with you there mate, no point in being the richest man in the graveyard! For me and the miles I do I'd rather just keep this car for now as I still like it and just spend the money saved on more holiday (when we can). You'll have no problem selling your S3, it always looks nice.

Glad your mum is ok :)

Etron GT is a pimped up battery powered A7 the sleek looking German dodgem car of the moment....glad i grew up in the decades that l did....the Media are blanket bombing us with electric cars here and in Europe....but there's a huge void.....between us and the U.S/China.....car industries which makes no sense at all.....as they're markets are far larger x 100.....no restrictions....on exhaust sound, rev limiters, speed limiters.............

lol thought my miles were low :D Did you extend the warranty? Can't believe it's been 4 years since you got it!!! Out of interest did anyone phone you and ask you what you wanted to do at the end of the deal?

Agree with you there mate, no point in being the richest man in the graveyard! For me and the miles I do I'd rather just keep this car for now as I still like it and just spend the money saved on more holiday (when we can). You'll have no problem selling your S3, it always looks nice.

Glad your mum is ok :)

This looks a bit tasty...too much for me though :( https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/new-audi-e-tron-gt
They contacted me 2 weeks after i paid the car of to see what i was doing at the end of my pcp term lol
