Hi all,

So i've been posting a bit on here every now and then. But i've finally got my first Audi. Pics to follow.

It's a tidy cab in silver, with blue hood and graphite black alloys.

For background, I also run BMW e46 straight 6 petrol 2.2.

This will be a long thread, but lot's to get through, my turn it into a diary after...

The new car has 77k on the clock with full service history (4 Audi and 1 Audi specialist). Believe its been on longline service - at least 12k between them - I'll reduce that going forward.

Car HPI clear. It has 2 owners before me and the car seems in very good condition otherwise.

I'd like to get this car tip top and don't mind spending bit of money to sort so points i'd like opinion / guidance on:

  1. Is there preventative stuff I should do or any basic enhancements / fixes?
  2. Bodywork - Overall excellent. One point that worries me a bit, and brings aa downer on my is....rear quarter / arch may have been sprayed at some point. No evidence of accident damage at all... Only thing that made me notice is a paint drip one viewing - but otherwise everything else was perfect - so decided to go ahead and buy. When I got home i noticed where rear panel meets bumper I can see slight peel / flake of lacquer or paint. Any thoughts?

  3. Steering wheel controls not working - Owner had a Dension kit fitted. He later had the gateway removed because it was apparently draining battery whilst he was not using the car (lived away in spain a bit). Gateway model GW172NB. I assume removing this has caused the steering wheel control to stop working - assume some wiring not fixed properly somewhere. Where should I be looking to sort this?

  4. Leather arm rest clip broken so doesn't stay closed when lifted position - how best to sort?
Now few mechanical bits...

1. Short shake on crank and firing up - starts fine however. Not something I'm used to in my BMW. Is this initial split second shake normal?

2. Power - on paper the car is more powerful than my BMW. BUT it doesn't feel like it. I can feel a small boost (i'm new to turbo cars) but expected more. Now not sure what the question is here, but wanted to call this out. Am I just used to BMWs? Anything I should check?

3. Have spotted 3 areas where there is oil (not dripping - just can see mark / residue. See images.
i. Near filler cap
ii. Pipe to left of filler cap

iii. Unidentified component at back of engine (toward windscreen).

I've heard PCV etc can go, did the test whilst engine running - was able to remove cap as no major suction.

4. Clutch check - seems fine, no slip when testing e.g. shift up and down - revs normal. Only thing I did notice is car DID NOT Stall when trying to move in third - I was able to move the car - is this ok? On BMWs (petrol) they stall.

Service Questions

Car had major service about 2 years ago / 10k ago.

1. Is it worth me just doing a major service again (key item I'd do this for is spark plugs)? Worth changing again?

2. Do these need regular coolant changes (last done 2013 with cambelt and pump).

3. Should i change fuel filter?

4. What oil is used in these motors? Manual give specific code but not grade.

Thanks very much. Over pleased, but these are few things that id like to know more about and address. Hope none are major?!

Hi folks
Any thoughts. Let me know if i should split the questions into different threads. I thought it would be easier to have all here so can track progress.

Hi all.

*Some updates....problem 3 and 4 solved...

Steering controls were not working as previous owner had basically unplugged the dension unit but left remainder of harness as is. I've been t's he unplugged to solve battery drain problem...so hopefully this doesn't appear for me...

Arm rest clip fixed . Ordered and fitted the clip from eBay. Will post pics shortly including a good diy guide I used from another forum.

Interested in how you did the armrest lid as the clip on mine is broken too.

In no particular order... I've just serviced mine, used MANN filters (air, cabin, fuel, oil, £37 for the lot off Euro Car Parts with a code) and Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 (£35 ish for 5 litres from Amazon). Fuel filter was a pig to change, I had to undo the reinforcing bar thing and it would just about squeeze out through the gap.

Is it auto or manual? The CVT doesn't feel very fast at all in D but put it in S and it's noticibly quicker (at least a second quicker 0-60). Don't forget it's only 200bhp in a 1.7 tonne car so it's never going to be a rocket.

Preventative stuff, oil pickup and hpfp cam follower are the main two I can think of, but there's probably more.

Your cambelt will be due this year anyway, so do your coolant change (and water pump, ancilliary belt) then :)

Hi mate, welcome to Audi ownership!
In no particular order....
Your pcv may be knackered, I'm pretty positive it should have suction if working correctly. It's a cheap and easy part to replace so probably worth doing. Along with diverter valve and cam follower, they are the common things to go and keeps it in good running order.
Engine oil is 5w30 fully synthetic.
As for power, mine never felt particularly rapid until it got remapped, I thing they were just designed to be a nice smooth drive. I had a friend put a generic type map on it and now it goes really well, so maybe worth looking into.
I get a major service done on mine every other year, then just oil and filters between the majors.
