Hi All

My garage is fitting new suspension to my B8 Avant 3.0tdi quattro and there's an issue with the front driver side upright/knuckle

The top pinch bolt is banana shaped as its been over torqued, and the top of the upright had squashed to leave no gap where the slot should be.

He's worries its break as its aluminium (audi specialist and hes a good guy)

I'm trying to source another asap!

Part number is 8K0 407 254 R (or T) I'm told.

Does anyone have a good used one for sale please, who can courier asap? Or close to Brackley, Northants and I'll collect?

Many thanks

Its a shame its not 8K0407254ab as I've got a brand new one sitting in my garage that I ordered wrong that I can't send back.

the overall dimensions are the same. the difference is the size of the collar that is used for the track control arm and tie rod end. The 8K0407254ab is for the track control arm/ tie rod that has a M14 thread for the nut. The 8K0407254R version uses a M12 thread. Best way to tell which one you need is to measure the thread on the track control arm.

Hi Ben sorry to hear about the issues sounds like the car has been worked on by some kind of amateur in the past . To many Ugga Duggas by the sound of it.

I am pretty sure I didn't undo that top pinch bolt on the arms when I fitted my Eibach kit, Much like the Passat steel and alloy just don't mix. It was several years ago when I did mine but I may have had to compress the springs on the car and undo the top arms at the inboard end of the top mount.
The job is fairly simple if all goes OK, but mixing steel and ally together is never a good idea.

To be fair, the dreaded pinch-bolt is and has always been a bit of a mare. There are countless threads and Youtube videos on overcoming a stuck bolt akin to removing Excalibur from the stone! They are stuff of legends.

Heat, brute force and sheer frustration all take their toll. Not much use to the OP now, but its a wonder why some places like Audodoc don't rent out the Klann tool on a deposit and invoice basis. I reckon it would be a small price to pay knowing you could tackle suspension issues without falling at the first hurdle.
