A couple of years ago my wife took her time looking for - and eventually found - a very nice, well cared-for, v well maintained 2004 A4 Avant 1.8T .. it was one of those no-brainer finds that can happen if you take your time and don't jump too early.

Additionally it was originally specified with a deal of high-spec additions/upgrades such as full leather, special entertainment system, other things that sometimes we had wrongly assumed were regular-fit but discovered later they were neat little added touches ...

And it is one of these, though not so little!, that I need some input about please from someone more knowledgeable than I am.

Apparently the driver's door mirror/pod is some kind of style/function upgrade according to my Audi folks. Its mirror glass was gently discoloured at the edges when she got the car, appeared almost like anti-glare. ... wasn't of any concern.

That was picked up however as an advisory on a subsequent MoT (Audi/VAG indie that I have no problem with), and ditto on its latest MoT but with the guidance that its further deterioration - which has gradually become more evident - rendered it now borderline and it would clearly be an MoT fail next year.

A poor blind-spot mirror is an MOT fail? They are safety essentials of course these days, but actually within MoT requirements?? Apparently!

I understand that the whole thing is in some way special, including the use of sandwich construction mirror glass with a liquid or gel (?) core that does something nifty I guess ... auto-dip anti-dazzle? Heated maybe? But there's no switch/button internally to operate such a function.

Can't actually think of much else a blind-spot mirror might be upgraded with/to/by.

Anyway, it is £300+ for a new one! Really.

I checked and did some digging too, and a second-hand/salvage glass alone is £80-90.

So then,

If someone has come across this and found a relatively painless way to deal with it I'd welcome their input .... right now I am planning simply to get a conforming/standard mirror-glass and bond it to the failing/failed one ... hey presto, a perfectly acceptable blind-spot mirror again with very little messing around! It won't be heated or whatever admittedly, but neither is the one that's on but we didn't know it was supposed to be and that's been fine anyway!

Any advice/recommendations/etc welcomed however.

Cheers,

Howard

Put up a pic of the glass, so we can be sure of the advice.

I'm sure of the glass type, but I'd rather be 100%

Have to wait until she gets back from work later, but yes I'll happily do that ... thanks for the interest!

Okay, so ....

This shape.

You can also get a sense of the bronze-ish discolouration round the edges.

The other pic is included just to confirm type of housing in case that's relevant to identifying anything, it's not that awful faired-in streamlined eyesore but this minimalist Pod-type.

If anyone comes across this at a later point I'd still be interested in having any input on this ... thanks!

It's an anti-dazzle glass. You must have the anti-dazzle rear view mirror in the car, as its connected to that. Or at least it is on the A8 models.
We have an S8 with the same style of glass. Again, the price is extortionate for a wing mirror glass, so I replaced it with a tinted blue heated wing mirror glass for a fraction of the price. I Just taped up and left the two connectors off for the anti-dazzle function.

Still defrosts when it needs too. I didn't rate the wing mirrors anti-dazzle anyway. Don't get any where near as much glare from those as I do from the rear view mirror which still works pertectly.

Thanks for the info and pointers, S4_dan, much appreciated. This is the first Audi I have needed to get to know for any tasks/work that might come along, so my brand-learning curve still has a large upswing ahead for me, lol.

That looks like the best way for me to go as well, and I have found a couple of YT videos on the remove/replace process which appears quite straightforward. I'll look around just to see if I can chance upon a direct replacement just to maintain the car's original spec, however at the quoted prices I suspect that the anti-dazzle might become sacrificed as I have that on my own car and frankly it hardly ever registers with me in use even though it operates perfectly fine.

Thanks again!

After reading this i just realised i have these mirrors fitted, or at least one! My passenger side is this type but the drivers side is normal glass. My rear view is anti dazzle. Must be a thing with drivers side mirrors breaking.

Search on Ebay with 8E0857536 This is the main part of the part number for a drivers side mirror for your car. Cheapest solution just fit a normal heated mirror. Second hand items appear to be available but whether they would be any better and for how long who knows.
You could try Mike at *** if you want another price on a genuine mirror. They will be cheaper than the dealers.

desertstorm and stevey83 - Thanks for the kind responses ...

I am a little wary of pre-used/salvaged items and their continued reliability .. the gel-core will already be deteriorating, and any rough treatment in salvaging/storing won't help ... it would have to be new for me if I was going that way.

I decided to go with a heated but non-dip mirror glass instead, and frankly the auto-dip function hadn't even been noticed/realised yet anyway!
