Hi there,
I was driving back from Wales last week when I accidentally stuck it in 3rd instead of 5th,the revs shot up and the engine break nearly snapped my neck! Immediately after this the engine management light appeared and the car became juddery and I lost about 80% of power. I managed to drive it to a safe place and get a tow back home. The car is now in my local garage (GMS in Maidstone) and they hav said they dont want to touch the engine as it is knackered. Should I get a 2nd opinion or accept this and let them go ahead with an engine replacement. If so, can anyone recommend a decent company that sell quality, tested and warranted engines?
Thanks in advance,
JH

Get a second and third opinion...The truth lies somewhere in the middle of all three....I'd say that would break the gearbox not the engine?

Forgot to say, I checked that it went into all gears which it did, but then as i was pulling over, the power cut out a if the battery had been drained.

You need to ask them what has broken, stretched.
It is possible to destroy an engine with over revving.
Ive done it in the past. Mini with conrod out thru the block, Ford Escort with broken valves (and then pistons)

The mechanic said im looking at a few hundred ££ just for diagnosing whats wrong internally! Does anyone know what the juddering could have been, it got a lot worse under full throttle but eased off completely when just resting foot on throttle. Thanks again.

Yes, sounds like bottom end damage, which could be the answer to the juddering. Got a few opinions now. Anyone know where i can source a decent trusted 2nd hand engine please?

OK, so I thought I'd let you guys know what i ended up doing. I found out there are far too many con artists out there putting together two dead engines and painting it, calling it "reconditioned". I decided to think long term as i want to keep my car for a while yet, I went on the F.E.R website (federation of engine remanufacturers) which is basically a body that approves engine remanufacture companies. There were 3 in the south east and the one which could give me the best warranty and overall deal I decided to go with. The company is called engine solutions, I will update you with the service i receive. Thanks.
