This should cause some controversy!

So i thought it was about time I put some pics of the motor up now it's got to a reasonable state, a UK first? B5 S4 on air?
The airride was half easy, the front as it's been done before on Passats, fwd A4s an A6s, the rear however was another story, I was using Rayvern Hydraulics for the build, well known as probably the top specialist in all things that make cars go up and down in the UK, he's been doing it for years and without Ray this would never have got finished, having never done a quattro before it took a good many trips over to the workshops, lengthy phone calls and much trauling through the net to figure out how to get the rear to work, around 3 months all together, but we got there in the end with great success and all is good.
I'm running 2 compressors and 2 11.5l tanks with water trap, 8mm lines, high flow valves and 150psi pressure switch. All fitted by myself over a number of weekends. The bulk of the kit is hidden away in the spare wheel well, except for one tank behind the seats as this was added later, but still all nice and tidy, the switches and gauges have but trimmed into a custom panel replacing the ash tray, and the cigarette lighter relocated to the handbrake area to keep a 12v supply in the front of the car.
The ride is good and comfortable, we used Avo adjustable dampers along with the bags, although it does feel a little bouncy after having coilovers for 2 years but to be expected, overall very liveable.
Anyway I wont waffle on, pics do the talking so much easier, lets see what people think! Personally I love it, the car looks awesome dropped onto the floor, but remains useable and practical, even more than before when on coilovers.
Oh I cant recommend Rayvern enough, top top guys, the most genuine helpful people Ive net for a long time, although I think they'd rather never hear my name again!

A random order of pictures I know, and not the best shots I've ever done, but I just threw this together to get it out there.
Thanks for the comments in advance whatever you think.

Ride height sits anywhere I want, so I run it at the same height it used to be on coilovers with no probs at all

Does it have presets, or do you just manually raise it to the height you want each time?

Very impressed with the 'trap door' install in the boot. Does look very neat.

me likey very much..not a fan of the wheels but it still ****** rocks.:rockwoot:

Did turn out quite nice in the end didn't it! Keepin it useable and practical!

To set the ride height you use the 2 switches and gauges in the dash, I know that ride height on the front needs to be at number 4, and the rear number 7, so hop in, pop them up to those pressures and I'm sorted! You can get preset controllers on the states with pre programmed pressures/heights, which maybe an added option in the future, but aren't cheap and wiring can be fun! The system I have is pretty standard over here on air set-ups, simple, easy to use, and ****** all to go wrong.

:hubbahubba: thats lower to the ground than snakes *******..ive scean some shady looking installs but that looks like a top job (still got loadsa room in the boot)..nice work

Whoa mamma!!!:hubbahubba: Impressive stuff mate, looks absolutely mental when dropped right down! Good work there mate!:icon_thumright:

wtf. i guess there is a reason this is a first

well certainly a new area of mod for a S4, not something most would do to a performance car

what are your next plans? shows etc?

dare you to post on rs246 and audisrs !

Looks wkd mate! Really like your S4 looks the business. Wouldnt mind one...
Lovely alloys aswell!! They go well with the car. Looks like a very clean and tidy example of an S4.
Enjoy the car

My only concern with air would be that the "spring rate" decreases as you lower it...

On regular coilsprings you tend to increase the spring rate as you lower the vehicle, to take account of the reduced bump travel.

With airbags, increasing the bag pressure (ie spring rate) raises the vehicle, meaning the car would probably end up very hard at OE ride height and very soft when its lowered into the weeds, which is the opposite of what you want.

With a real spring you can choose the length and rate independantly, but with an airbag the pressure dictates both. Presumably this can be adjusted by changing the size of the bag, but there will still only be one "sweet spot", above which the car will be too stiff and below it will be too soft and bottom out constantly.

It did take a fair bit of tweaking to get right, you're right, too low is too bouncy, but from coilover height up it's just fine, never gets too stiff, also the adjustable damping helps, in fact it's a lot more comfortable than the coilovers which is a plus. Hey I know it's a performance car, certainly not going near any tracks now, but that's not why I built it, I've had an Evo and Skyline, so fancied a different route with this one, always wanted airride, just to dump it on its ****, see the reactions etc. so why not do it to a car no one else ever has! Getting her round the shows, the few that are remaining this year, and this is what I built it for, getting great reactions everywhere, also to make it a bit more practical, can actually get over speed bumps now! Besides I really don't drive it that quick anyway, just like to know I have the power there when I need it, and then there's the noise that goes with it!

Just for comparison today next to standard height 2.8 quattro.

Just a small difference!

Also, watch the front wishbone bush rubbers.

Swapping them out for polys might be an idea, as the poly isnt bonded to the arm and can turn rather than twist.

I am the constant watch on the front suspension, especially with the extreme angles it moves through now. I'm Mr Paranoid when it comes to cars. In fact I had the whole front end checked over just the other day. Poly bushes will be going in when needs must.

fair ****** play mate, thats lower than gary colemans nuts

i want them wheels dude, ill do a swap wit my BBS CH's lol

sweet ride mate

I would swap, but I had CHs before! Nice wheels mate, suit the B5 real well.

I love it and the car and the wheels too , does this mean they have a off the shelf kit now? Dont let anyone tell you its wrong cause its your car and dont forget if you wanna go racing it only takes a few hours to put the coilovers back on! Any more mods on the horizon?

Awesome stunning car generally, but I just don't 'get' the slammed suspension thing.

It's all about the stance baby!

I dunno what to do next, I've spent a small fortune on her so just gonna spend time getting to some shows and enjoying her. Did even contemplate selling up soon for another change, i've had the S4 for over 2 years, far too long for me!

There is a guy on ukpassats wich had a better set-up on his passat. It included front airbags over standard coil over strut and he allways had a decent ride when lowered. Sadly he sold his car without the air ride and i wasnt quick enough to make an offer !

Love it mate.. top work!

Saw it at GTI Inters show n shine with masking tape on the arches lol.

Yeah! It was supposed to be ready for that show and I was gutted when it wasnt. Should be at Players Live next weekend too

what is the ride like? smoother than stock? does it still handle well or do the air bags wallow around like they do on trucks?
always liked the auto height adjustability. too many times scraping my undercarriage on feild car parks!

SLAM DUNK the FUNK!!!!

Man that looks sweet.

Im loving it :)

Thanks for all the positive comments, I'll at Players on sunday, car may even be for sale there if anyone's interested........

What can I say, I change my mind quickly! It's not for definate, just gonna test the water to see, if I can't get what I want then I'll keep her for a while longer, but over 2 years is a long time for me to keep a car!

I personally don't see the point in getting rid of a good car, that's relatively problem-free, only to buy a newer one, and start debugging all over again.

2 years is also a pretty short time to keep any car, but good luck with the sale.

It's not a short time for me! I change usually once a tear, wanna own and experience as many different cars as possible. I like the change. Also don't wanna run them into the ground and get pennies back for it.

I know what you mean about starting again though, I have the intention of buying something and leaving it alone, pretty much.......if that's possible........ although we're gonna be starting a family soon so that should slow me down fo a few years!

And like I say, only an idea at the mo, see what interest I get and take it from there.

I got my 2 magazine features out of this one, which is what I've aimed for for years, so I'm happy! (Redline mag out Monday by the way!)
