Hi everyone this is my first post and unfortunately not for a good reason, I've just picked up an a4 2.0 tfsi special edition (56 plate) and its developed a shaking of the car on idle, the revs don't move at all they stay just under 1000rpm, I assume its running ok it seems a bit flat between 3-4000rpm but I don't know if that's because I'm used to my Mercedes e320 cdi which has been mapped so has a clean power curve but I thought the Audi would feel as quick so I cant tell you if it has dropped in power or not as I'm not familiar with these engines, as said before the car shakes a lot on idle it does it from first start up after about 30 seconds and is still there when warmed up, any ideas would be grateful?

Thank you.

PCV failure. Can you remove the oil cap when the engine is running without a whirlwind occurring?

I just turned the car on and tried to remove the oil cap it’s really hard to take off and wants to suck the cap down, not sure if that is normal or not I might of been able to pull it completely off if I tried but it’s definitely under a lot of pressure.

PCV failure. Lots of info on this forum about it and a relatively cheap and easy fix.

Ahh ok thank you sidrick, it is currently booked in at an Audi specialist on Monday for a diagnostic so I’ll cancel that then and get the pcv sorted, is there any upgrade possible for this failure? I’ll have a look around the forum for what other people have said about this pcv, everything is a bit foreign at the moment as I’m trying to familiarise myself with it all as I’ve never been on a forum before

I think fitting a catch can is the 'fix', though Audi revised the PCV valve a number of times, so you'd hope the latest one is an improvement.

There's a sticky in this very section with a lot of info :)

I’ll have a look at that on my lunch break then I have quickly had a look and found a forge pcv delete kit and a gasket for £108 so that might be the option I’ll go with, My revs don’t drop in between gear changes under hard acceleration either so sounds like it constantly over revving I have to take foot off wait a sec then change gear for it not to over rev...weird I’ve never experienced things like this it’s all a mystery to me lol

The RPM issue is normally down to the clutch pedal switch, very common failure part and very cheap, easy and quick diy fix , worth replacing it just for the sake of it even without any PCV issues.

I’ve just fitted the clutch pedal sensor I’ll test it on the way home later see if it has solved the over rev, looks like I’ll be buying the pcv delete later to cure the shaking (I hope), I used to use ecp all the time then there manager left and everything I ordered seemed to be wrong so are relationship took a downward spiral! Since then I’ve avoided them I heard people praise them and hate them I think it comes down to what area there located and the staff they employ.

hope that sort's out your RPM issues chap, I hate ECP and only go there as a last, last resort, When I wanted a switch TPS were out of stock but ecp had several and as the nearest is only a 10 min drive I bit the bullet and went to them, otherwise I avoid them.
The overall PCV issues that effect these engines will never go away with the oem revised part, it may solve your immediate issue but the design is not engine friendly to be honest.
Delete route will make a big long term improvement etc but nothing is 100% eitherway, just a case of minimising the problem.

I’ve just got back home and I was in a lot of traffic on the way so couldn’t really test it fully on hard acceleration through the gears but it definitely feels better so far from the small pulls I could do, no obvious over rev I noticed, As for the pcv issue going off the advice I’ll have to just delete it and hope for the best for longevity I think, the car will be going in for a remap at the start of next month so I’m hoping this issue is sorted by then I’ll keep you updated anyway thanks for all the help.

Good luck chap, just a quick note for you , you may now notice with the new clutch switch fitted the revs drop off quite suddenly so it takes a few days to get used to it.
I noticed it straight away and took a short while to readjust my gearchanging method to get used to the quick rev drop off, all fine now though.

Took the car for a proper road test and the revs seemed to have improved very slightly but they defiantly don't drop off suddenly like they should, they seem to just hang at the point I've let the throttle off, the clutch pedal switch was slightly different shape than the one that was on my car but it still had the two pins and I just gathered they may have changed the body very slightly as an upgrade or something  the part number for one I have fitted is 7H0927189

have you tried removing it and refitting just in case the plunger is not moving fully, 99.9% of the time a new switch solves the problem .

I’ll have a good luck today mate I was rushing yesterday so I’ll take the panel off and have a look properly see if I’ve fitted it wrong I just took the old one out and put the new one in.

When I changed mine I had to release the plunger as it was locked halfway down, not sure if that's the same with your switch.

no, its spring loaded so will extend by itself , but mine replacement was locked half way in and I had to twist it to realease it fully but yours maybe different, in theory they should be the same but my replacement was different even though it was the replacement part number.

Ok I’ll get it out and have a look at it I did keep the old one at my work so I will double check there the same part number aswell.

I've had the switch back off checked it and it seems to be fully out and working as it should I've put it back on and checked the clutch pedal against the rod and the clutch pedal just meets up with the rod it don't press the rod in at all, I cant see how that is right why would it compress in if the clutch pedal don't even reach it to begin with, I cant get hold of my other switch to compare as its at work now until Monday, but if that all sounds ok then its still booked in at Audi Technik Monday for a diagnostic report so I might as well just hang fire until they have done what they need to do and hopefully find the culprit I guess....so annoying.

on the pcv issue I've found the 034 motorsport catch can kit on awesome gti my question is I'm assuming that's a lot better way than the cheap deleting option but is it really worth £325 or is there a way around it to bring the price down because all I can see is your paying £80 for a plate and a lot for a catch can that you can buy on ebay for pence, is the 034 kit the preferred option or just a bit of an overpriced name tag?

I have an 034 plate spare now and possibly a mishimoto tank .
The PCV issue is quite indepth and not all catch tank's do much , maybe have a read on the subject in the sticky section in this B7 forum, may help you a bit more.
Sounds like your clutch switch is ok then Ricky, do you have access to vcds as a scan may be very beneficial in showing up any other issues that may be causing problems will also help trackdown why your rpm's are still a bit up in the air, just a thought.

funny you have said that rob I just spent the last 30 minutes reading through the whole thread about your complete pcv delete, sounds a bit out of my skill level to fit I think lol but id be interested in a kit if you did ever get round to making any for sale? If not i think my best bet is to do a full custom pcv delete similar to the one you done, ill price all the individual bits up that I need then have a cry at how much its cost, click buy then figure out how where all the bits go in the right places lol

as for the vcds they will have one at Audi Technik as I don't have access to one myself so ill get them to see what issues it throws up on there fancy computers.

PCV diy setup doesn't have to cost shed loads, just get a decent tank, hoses and plate, even a part delete is still far better than the oem setup .
good luck chap.

quick update on the shaking and the revs raising in gear changes, it was the pcv causing issues with shaking that's now replaced and the revs was the clutch pedal switch which wasn't clicked round twice so it wasn't earthing (my fault installing the new part) thanks for the help its much appreciated.

that's good news chap, so its onwards and upwards now then.:icon thumright:

Oh yeah time for the fun stuff, the GFB dv+ is here now so have to get that fitted and the 19x10 rear wheels I was going to try and squeeze on the a4 I took them off the Mercedes yesterday cleaned them up and found 1 crack in each rear wheel, so I’ll be wheel shopping now aswell
