I’m with Audi today to get the Audi presence update/fix and they have discovered this. See the lid of the coolant cap. They’ve said it just needs to be flushed and replaced. He said it’s safe to drive. Another warranty Job. its a 4-5 hour job so get it looked at to save you money in the future.
Will forum members have a look and report back. [IMG]

Did they say what caused this, has the silica bag inside split?

They said it’s safe. Will know more then. Going back in a few weeks to get it done. He didn’t mention issues.

Yeah it’s getting a flush and clean. I could see how some idiot could make that mistake because the windscreen wash bottle isn’t visible. But the sign on the bottle is clear. Apparently it’s a big job and thankfully they’ve spotted it before the warranty ends.

Yes the car has to be connnected to their computers as the electric coolant pumps have to be run, plus electic valves opened, to ensure air is fully bled out of the system..

If it looks like mayonnaise (which it looks like to me) then oil has got in there somehow. It will be safe to drive but you really need to get to the bottom of how it got in there.

I had this issue with my VW Bora and flushed it many many times and it always returned. Eventually one day an oil warning light came on and the entire oil contents of the engine ended up mixed in the coolant and my mechanic advised new engine in my case. It can be due to head gasket failure, cracked block, radiator cracked internally (if your rad cools both water and oil like some do).

Bottom line is I strongly recommend you try and identify the root of the issue (not just flush it). Especially if under warranty.

I see what you mean.. in which case looks like it's nothing serious.
    Could it be limescale?

No sure what it is but will enquire more when I visit them again. Definitely worth others checking theirs. Doing so safely once the car is cooled down, pop off the cap. ( ps I take not responsibility for stupidity, do so at your own risk)

Either that, or rust or even the mixing of two types of coolant...

Red colour would suggest rust. Pump perhaps, because the Radiator is aluminium. I’m just guessing of course. Not sure why the coolant would have been mixed but we didn’t own it for the first two years, so there is that.

Is your coolant a red/pink colour by any chance? I'm just wondering if it's just the 'active' (red) component of the coolant that's splashed up or something at some point and dried out? Much like if you were running salt water in there (don't do that...), for example, I'd kind of expect a layer of evaporated salt residue to appear?

Are the audi techies going to analyse the sustance? If it was my car I would definately want to know what's caused it. Is there a smell to it?

This is mine, suggests it is quite common:

As I suggested before, I wonder if it's just evaporation of the coolant leaving a residue on the cap?

A smell test is one the most important ones, plus there is always a taste test :puke2:

The service here is unreal. They drove me to the cinema and back on them. Couldn’t get the coolant bottle clean so they just replaced it. Will find out shortly if there is any reason as to the change of colour/debris/muck.

Took out two years extended warranty for peace of mind. I’m not taking chances.

They couldn’t give a reason as to why. It’s done now at least. Car is pulling so well now.

Good that they have done this and went the extra mile with the coolant, even if it wasn't really needed.

I have just found this on mine after having the car for 11 months it has done 10,000 miles since purchase and is still under warranty the garage is claiming that this is not covered in the warranty and want to charge me nearly £900 to flush the system, I am currently trying to get this done under warranty.

The other worry I have is that flushing the system does not find the root cause of the contamination, what is causing what looks like rust in the cooling system of a car that has covered 30,000 miles?

A friend of mine had this issue on his B8.5 which makes me think it's somewhat common for Audi's. The cause of the rust coloured sludge is water getting mixed with coolant. Water ingress could be caused by anything from the cap not being closed properly / perished seal, condensation build-up or a careless engine bay valet.

quick update on mine, after I made it clear that I don't expect to pay for this my dealer is now doing this work under warranty. I hope that a flush and clean will solve the problem and that it is not something in the system that is corroded.

A follow on to what I said about my friend, he had the flush done about 2 years ago and it never came back. Still has the car.
