MRC Stage 2 S4

Another forum member who has experienced both said that you should not let the lack of a sports diff be the deal breaker. Apparently bigger ARB's can improve the handling.

I went without it in the end. I'm happy with what i have but it will depend on your driving style.

Well since I've got a courtesy car for 3 weeks only, I don't think I will be able to be too picky!

I would make the diff the be all and end all personally, drove both before buying my S4 and would say there's a difference but you'd struggle to notice on normal roads (legally).

Your spec is similar to my car minus the sports diff, good choice! Mine might go up for sale if I find the right RS4.

Got any pics of your car? :D

I did too and found it fairly easy to tell the difference - you just need to force a rear wheel to lose traction, which you can do by cornering hard around a roundabout. Of course I'd be the first to say that if you have never taken your (normal) diff beyond its limits then you don't need a car with sports diff!

I wanted a sports diff, but none were coming up so I had to do without
Thinking of ARBs V soon & have
Eurocode Alu Kreuz Billet Aluminum Drivetrain Stabilizer on its way too

Alu kreuz Doesn't fit right hand drive cars

Ohh poop thats an expensive mistake lol :)

£1600 I think or maybe slightly less
Just coming back to this, it says on the MRC website that for the stage 2 you need a full exhaust. Does that mean you have to get a bigger exhaust fitted before you can get the stage 2 map? Or can they do it with the stock exhaust?

I'm all up for bigger exhausts to release more power, but on my last car I had a full 3.5" exhaust all the way from the turbo back and it was so loud it drove me insane.

Plus I just had a look at what Milltek exhausts cost and they seem awfully expensive. What size are they?

I think you'll find that the MRC website has rather generic statements. In my communication with MRC they have made it clear that there are no significant gains to be had from an aftermarket exhaust with the 3.0 TSFI stage 2 package. Most people only put aftermarket exhausts on these cars because of the sound.

That is ridiculous though, spending £1800 on changing the exhaust note! My guy at Longlife can make it sound however I want at a fraction of the price.

It is a lot for a system, not as much as the valvesonic though :)

I personally think the diff is worth holding out for, it makes a a significant difference on the tighter twisty stuff when pressing on. I'm not for 1 second saying a car without the diff isnt any good, but it does make a difference IMHO.

Car above is lovely..... perhaps biased as its virtually identical to mine :)

I'm still trying to decide whether to go Stage 1 or Stage 2. Stage 1 releases the overhead the engine has without adding any hardware, which I'm a fan of, BUT the call of circa 480bhp is a loud one!.

Ideally I'd like to go to MRC, but they are the best part of 400 miles away. If going Stage 1, then I need to decide if its worth travelling for when I have Revo,APR and Shark all relatively near by.

Well I found one in the spec I'm looking for and within my budget(plus already have a stage 2 done running 470bhp), but it's a manual!

I drive into London for work every day and being used to an auto I don't think I will ever enjoy a manual in stop start traffic again. Plus I wonder how long the stock clutch will last with the increase in torque.

Link? :)

The auto box is great, but it can go wrong at a much greater expense than changing a clutch, especially at higher mileage.
Obviously not all have issues and most are fine, but I'd research it fully before committing.

Well I've just test driven the car. I must say it didn't feel as quick as I expected. Being used to big turbos with lots of lag gives you quite a different driving experience. Very driveable though with a very linear power output.

There's a couple of things I noticed though. While the car was idling getting up to temp, it all of a sudden started making a very noticeable ticking sound. Since I don't know Audi engines, I have no idea what it could be. Also, when I took it out on the road, the engine seemed very smooth while driving, but when I came to a stand still, on tick over the engine felt a bit lumpy. You could actually feel it through the seat. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm always uber paranoid when buying cars as you have no idea how it's been treated, especially if it's been tuned.

Check a full check done it before buying, best way. I foolishly didn't given the history that came with the car, but use a specialist who's seen these cars before
It has extensive service history, mostly from a main Audi dealer with lots of paperwork. I phoned MRC who had just carried out a full service on the car plus tweaked the map as it had been tuned by another company originally, and they cannot remember anything untoward with the car.

Still, funny noises always get me paranoid if I don't know the engine.

The high pressure fuel pump on these cars is very noisy.
This defo doesn't sound like a fuel pump. I had a Bosch 044 pump with external surge tank before and that was noisy as hell, but this is just a slow ticking noise. Not fast enough to be hydraulic lifters either.

So the guy has just phoned me to say he checked and it has the sports diff, plus all the other options you'd ever want. Black and red supersport seats, nav, b&o stereo etc. Plus MRC stage 2 tune. And this all for £18k.

I think I should go for it?

So what's the acceleration like compared to yr big turbo cars?is it night & day difference or is it the build quality is so good on the Audi that it didn't feels fast until u look down on the speedo...I'm in similar shoes as you...still on the look out for a s4

I found I missed the kick of turbos, but it revs quick and powerful from the off, and you suddenly realise the speed and have to back off....

Don't get me wrong, it's quick. You just don't get the thrills you do with a turbo car. Tbh, I much prefer the usable power you get from the S4 as my previous car was so laggy, I couldn't get it on boost in town. Haha.

I went from a nearly undriveable 560hp turbo car to a BMW 5 series auto and loved it for the comfort and luxuries. With the Audi you get the best of both worlds so it's a no brainer really. I would have just loved it to be a DSG model, but I don't have time to wait for one in this spec, so I think I'll have to bite the bullet. And besides, the clutch is light as a feather, not like the paddle and twin plates I've driven before.

What's the most hp anyone on here has made with a stage 2 from MRC? I've seen 485hp. Anyone got any more?

Well MRC did their development on Doug's S4 which achieved 500PS or thereabouts - which is why they show 500PS/600Nm on their website.

Yes, by a factor of 1.014277726508357 to be precise.

I don't understand how come Mrc can get high 400's & all the other tuners revo, apr etc etc can only get mid 400's
Have anyone dynoed there Mrc cars at other dynos to see what you getting

This arrived today. Milltek hi-flow sports cats which is being fitted by mrc in two weeks with a stage 2 dyno.
Ill let you know the results.
