Dull subject I know but odd mpg can be an indication of problems...

Have only owned my 2000/W 1.8tQS for a couple of months and two tankfuls and just wanted to check my mpg is ok as it's lower than I expected and not far off what I got from my last BMW 328.

From 2 tanks I got 315 and 275 miles, which equated to 25 and 29 mpg respectively. This was mainly on 30 - 40 limit roads. No motorway driving at all. No idea what I did differently to get such a 40 miles difference.

Is this about right? I was disapointed.

Yeah that sounds about right to me, the quattro will make it use more petrol.

The most I have had out of a tank is about 360miles. Normally is about 320 now.

Max i have had on mine is 475, the least is 230, really depends on how you drive it tbh

Avg is 300 miles on a tank of super

thanks for quick replies. Not sure how I managed 275 this month then. I don't drive it hard so it must just be my slowish journey to work, even though it is short.

How did u manage 475 Byzan? All motorway?

And soupie, is 320 average on a-roads or just about town?

Mine still seems really low even though I drive slow due to all the cameras on way to work.

going by what the car tells me i got 38mpg up the a9 from perth to inverness.bits of duel and bits of b road with plenty overtaking.****** good for 180bhp if you ask me.it averages just over 30 with mainly driving 3 miles to work and about town.cant remember what i get to a tank but on a run about the 400 mark.

I get no where near that but then I only get to hit 40 for about half a mile. Rest of journey is 30mph although its always moving.

Car is being serviced by audi in next month so i suppose that may show up anything. Though I may be worrying over nothing and it's just a little thirsty around town. Yet to do any long/ motorway journeys.

im going on about an 1100 mile round trip in a couple of weeks so ill see what it says then.

let me know, cheers. Am off to Bristol next week (From Hertfordshire) and it'll be the first big run so that will probably be a good indication.

I was under the impression fuel economy would be like a 1.8 (ie low) if you kept it off boost. Not that figures mentioned are that bad, just that I had similar from a six cylinder 2.8 beemer. Was expecting better.

anything like this with a turbo will never be that great.you should see about 35mpg at least from what the car tells you.its not far out on mine anyway.

on the first tank in my new (2000) 1.8tqs, 255 miles so far and comp says 225 miles left. average mpg hovering around 35. will know for sure when i actually fill up though (28 mile daily commute mostly a roads then through city). seem to remember getting around the same in my old car (one in sig i need to change it!).
thinking about getting a chipped uk 'economy' re-map, anyone have one? or other remap and seen improved economy?

with a full tank, just filled, the computer says 350 miles and then it gradually lowers it's expectations. So I am way off. Will make a judgement after the long run this week. My journey to work is only 4 miles so it's perhaps to be expected. Otherwise I'll get audi to do a check. Car rounds perfectly though so doubt its that, plus has full audi history.

when i fill up i think (well remembering from last car too) it always says 350-375 miles till next fill up, but depending on driving it will stay like that for quite a few miles before that figure reduces.

A mix of A-roads, B-roads and town. Probably 25% of the distance in town but 50% of the time because of queues etc.

when i fill up if i drive it like a granny it some thing like 450 butcomes down pretty quick.im sure i get about 400 out the tank.

I'm so far off all your figures even taking in to consideration a short 30mph journey each day.

What could be wrong? Can audi diagnosis this at a service or is alot of investigation needed?

99 180bhp 1.8tqs avant
average with town driving 21mpg
average on a full tank M1 journey London to Edinburgh cruising at "cough" 70mph (read 85-90) gets me around 30mpg

no real mods except FMIC and miltek to affect that

JAM if your only driving 4 miles each journey you'll be doing most, if not all of it in coldstart mode

Until the coolant reaches operating temp (probably around 70-80c) the engine runs rich, the enrichment greatest when the cars first started and tapering off as it warms up. 4 miles probably isnt even long enough to get the coolant upto temperature, so most of your driving is being done in this state.

I should also point out that its not actually that good for the engine for it never to be warmed up properly like that. It takes a good 10miles for the oil to reach 90c and if it never gets to temperature it tends to pick up quite a lot of condensation and moisture. The rich running all the time can also cause excessive bore wear by washing off the oil lubrication.

As for economy, ours (FWD) does approx 31mpg on average. This is ~45miles a day, some motorway at 70-80, some motorway at crawling speed and some town driving.

JCB: Mine seems similar-ish to yours, even slightly better so maybe all is ok.

Aaragon- I realise my short journey is not great for the car but I warm the car when possible before leaving. The car does get up to temp before switching off at work. I'd walk if I could but the type of roads and times prevent it. To compensate I over service my cars and change the oil every six months minimum.

Is there anything I can get audi to look at that might indicate an over fueling issue or will their diagnosis pick up anything?

Thanks for all the replies so far, most appreciated.

475 was on a run from me to Bradford at max 75 in 6th.

Usually its 350 ish depending on my right foot.

Is the temp guage running at 12 oclock ie 90 degrees? and do you have VAG com to log the MAF values

byzan your car isnt quattro though is it...

tbh for the type of mostly cold driving your doing, the economy is perfectly fine, imo

Temp always gets to 12oclock or 90.

Maybe 25-30mpg on short runs in a turbo 180bhp 4wd car isnt too bad.

Will mention it to my service manager at audi (who i bought the car from privately) and see if he thinks all sounds ok.

all replies have been appreciated

I'm getting about 33-35mpg out of my 2wd. I'd probably get a bit more if I emptied all the heavy crap I've been carting around for ages....

You're taking your B5 to Audi! Are you mad?
Also the coolant temp will hit 90 pretty quickly but the oil temp lags way behind. 4 miles won't get the oil up to temp and idling in the drive to get it warm won't do much for your fuel consumption. On a journey like that, you're basically screwed whatever you do, thus the low MPG.

I'm not mad!! Just lucky.

I bought the car privately from the service manager of a large audi dealer. He had bought it as an ex demo hence it's been well looked after for all it's life.

Because he is a top bloke he offered to service it, with a full receipt and a stamp in the book for the cost price, not the price the public pay for as long as I own the car.

The cost to me would shock you, it's that low, but then we all know dealer prices are rip offs. So I get to keep the full audi service history on my car going for absolute peanuts.

So no I'm not mad, I just was lucky to buy from a nice guy, who cares that the car is well cared for, after he has sold it.

And he works for Audi? I'm finding that very hard to believe.
Wow, great result!

Believe what you want mate, I was just lucky that seller was a Service manager and this was his wifes car. I love my cars but even I wouldn't be mad enough to pay full main dealer servicing costs on such an old car. But things worked out well and I get to keep my FASH up to date for less than cost of a specialist.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who offered advice on my mpg question.

ha ha ...looks like some kid made it in metal work while at school!

what he said though!! LOS!

anyone have one of these?

I love stuff like this! It's hilarious! These and those "Magnetic Fuel Savers" you fit to the fuel line to "Magnetise the fuel molecules for better combustion"....

If there was any benefit whatsoever surely the OEMs would get instant hard-ons and buy up the technology to beat the competition.

Funny, though!

just drove from gatwick to perth today and thats 490 miles.i got just over 400 miles out the tank i think.i was at about 390 miles when i put petrol in and the fuel light wasnt on.not sure what was left in the tank as my abs warning was on again at the time but i could have maybe got to glasgow on one tank.i averaged 35mpg over the 490miles.

Am pretty sure my mpg is ok after reading your figures.

Last week I drove from Watford to Bristol and back on less than half a tank. Remainder of tank was used on my normal short drives and I managed 375 out of a tank which equates to 34.7 mpg (10.8 gallons to fill tank divided by mileage)

While on the motorway the figures of mileage left and mileage travelled seemed to suggest I could have got 450miles from the tank at the rate I was going. Not bad I thought. Then I got home and returned to my driving on small roads.

So would seem all is ok. Was shocked that range could be between 275 and 480 miles from a tank depending on driving style. Thats 25.4 - 41.6mpg!! (in theory, if obc is to be believed).

Thanks to all who replied to my query, most appreciated.

yup its quite believeable there would be that much of a difference, start stop driving really does kill the fuel economy, not only do you waste fuel while stopped but accellerating off uses a lot more fuel than holding a steady speed.

You'll also find that using cruise control (if you have it) on the motorway will improve your mpg further as it will hold your speed at exactly 70mph or whatever you set it to, whereas with foot control the speed tends to vary a bit, you subconciously speed up and slow down all the time which affects the economy.

My short journey to work isnt even really stop start. No traffic as I avoid the schools. It's just small roads so is 35 - 40ish all the way but only for 5 ish miles. Seems even that kills the fuel economy!

I'm tellin you all! Get a diesel!
Nothing warms the heart like a cloud of smoke and a noise like 1900 bronchially infected pensioners at 7.30 in the morning. Especially when there's a frost.

i have intended to buy a diesel with my last 4 cars (for economy) but havnt quite managed it! They were: polo gti, 95 S6 avant (had 7 seats!), mk3 golf gti and now another A4 TQS. (no prises for guessing the best/worst economy wise!). but the A4 is a happy medium between economy, performance and comfort, as well as being my favorite and best quality car so far.

has anyone who has had ther car chipped/mapped noticed any differance economy wise? im thinking about having an 'economy' map done at some point in the future (next chipped uk forum discount day as i dont have the money for this time round i.e. saturday!) any opinions?
