ive had a friend of mine on the phone tonight hes stage 1 and last week fitted the infamous 3inch tip, hes as sick as a pig as hes sure this is what is to blame to make a rod to bend, the tip giving more air has put a greater load on the turbo on hes high milage s3, a specialist he uses has confirmed the tip would have put a greater strain on the turbo. all engine mods come with a level of taking a chance but this one maybe a ROD BENDER.
I dont think you can really blame one modification to be fair.....lets face it, it is a lottery, you take your chances or not....
There's alot of b5 tips being used and haven't had a problem, I refuse to believe the damage suffered was down to the tip more like a weak rods gone because the power improvement of the tip I dare say whatever his next mod was it would of bent the rod?
What a load of ****. How can more 'strain' on a turbo cause bent rods? What is this 'strain'? Because what the tip does is enable the turbo to do its job more efficiently. Effectively putting it under less 'strain' as you put it. Secondly, its been PROVEN to level out torque and boost. Which is what contributes to bent rods. Haha its quite funny he's instantly blaming this. Has he not thought it might be ill maintenance, orrrr, just a freak s3 failure
i wouldnt mind betting that it was the driving style since fitting the tip which contributed to the bent rod.
2 things bend rods very high revs for long periods including miss judgeing gears ie 5th to 2nd gear. or putting your foot down for argument sake at 50mph in sixth and putting max strain on your turbo, the 3inch tip maxamises this with greater air direted at the most important gateway to your turbo. obviously fitting a big turbo would ruin rods but hes talking about stage 1 or stage 2 like most of us on here.

High revs don't bend rods, high torque bends rods. There is no way the TIP has caused this, high mileage, the weakest part of the engine and plain old bad luck did it.
strain load putting your foot down in a high gear at low speeds causes bent rods in a modded car fact, not **** a word you seem to like.
Putting your foot down in 6th from 50mph could cause bent rods, due to the prolonged torque delivery on the rods. Nothing to do with the turbo, its.making its boost like any other time it does, the end, there is no strain on it at all in that sense, and certainly adding a 3inch tip would do anything in terms of strain or load, it increases its ability to get air, it still makes the same boost, still does exactly the same job, only easier There's no logic or theory to relate a bent rod to the tip, or the ability of the turbo to work less. It's just not possible.
but you said the extra strain on the turbo - from adding the tip bent his rod, not strain load? and erm, karl didnt say anything about putting your foot down in a high gear at low revs so youve just corrected him on something he didnt even mention!? lol
The bottom line is there's no proof!!! its part n parcel of putting engines under strain Dry ya eyes n get on with it " that's motoring "
That scenario your giving is a typical rod bending one, purely due to prolonged peak torque delivery, nothing to do with the strain on turbo, the turbo makes the boost its told to, the end, no strain, load, it just does its job like any other scenario, delivers boost how it should. Just because you have your foot down and its struggling to pick up, doesn't mean the turbo is under 'strain' or 'load'
your turbo gives the torque/load. more strain on it more of the mentioned, 3inch tip gives more air than is needed.
It's just a matter of logic and basic physics theory. if you can understand that you can understand when what and how a rod might bend. if you know what the 3inch tip does and how youl know that it simply can't be related to rod failure
Jog on mate, the 3" TIP gives the amount of fuel/air that the intake asks for. I bet your "stage 2" S3 has more torque than his stage 1 S3 with a Badger TIP, have you bent your rods?

Haha ive refreshed it about 3 times in a minute. It's just not good people making completely false assumptions about it based on nothing.
The fact is any engine modification that increases the power will contribute to a bent rod if it is going to happen... weather it is the 3 " tip or a map, the point is you carnt say it was the 3" tip was the cause...if he had the 3" tip on first then a remap, was it the remap that bust the rods?? Everybody that is pushing the engine out of origonal spec should be aware of the consequences.....be it 250bhp----or 350bhp Has he had the sump off ? any signs of oil starvation?
All I can say is been running mine now for few week with a Cr hybrid turbo few other mods including 3" tip and 24 psi and a **** map as I suppidly went down the root of been a tit but only got mi self to blame if goes booom I had no job and was going down this root anyway so thought **** it I just take it easy everywhere got manual boost controller so lowering the boost asap
I'd say oil starvation but I'm no expert either just been told by a mate who work at audi and see this all time
Sorry mate but this is NO proof that the TIP is too blame... why rods bend on 20v's has been discussed more times than I care to remember and the reasons are subjective at best... granted tuning an engine puts more strain on components but the way you have worded your post looks more like a direct dig at this particular component rather than an objective view of the overall level of tune on your mates car finally pushing it over the edge... it maybe only stage 1 but I have seen some pretty rubbish stage 1 maps running lean and overboosting which are all contributory factors to engine failure in particular rod failure... rod failure is becoming more common on higher mileage 20v's regardless of level of tune and there is no one thing that leads to this happening... Your statement ... ...is so inaccurate its not true... The way your post is worded sounds more like grievance than information... <tuffty/>
My god. How much miss information can there possibly be in one place. The long and short of it is, The engine will only draw what it needs. The Tip allows the engine to breath easier and makes the engine work less hard bringing air in, thus improving power. I am watching this thread to make sure that the facts are stuck to as anything else is hearsay IMHO
