Hi all,

I have read quite a number of posts regarding issues with the 5F module so I wanted to post my issue to see if anyone can help (apologies, it is a little long winded).

everything was working fine on my 2012 A5 (facelift model), then the mmi control unit started randomly stopping working. Then after a few weeks it stopped working altogether. However, everything else in the car works radio, Bluetooth, navigation etc but I can only control them with the steering wheel controls or voice command (not the best with a Welsh accent). Took it to Audi who said the mmi control unit needed to be replaced, so they changed it (£1000+) but then said “sorry it wasn’t that, it is the 5F module” which the quote £3000+. So after telling them to take a long walk off a short pier, I decided to look into getting this fixed myself. I have tried to change the byte 14 bite 5, as discussed on this and a lot of other sites but no joy. I spoke to an independent garage who said I could purchase a used unit and they would recode and remove the CP but they wanted me to pay for diagnostic charge for them to check it out first etc.

I am just hoping that someone can offer some advise on 1, if I can possibly fix this myself using VCDS, or 2, I just buy a second had 5F module and get the garage to sort it.

I would appreciate any advice anyone can offer. I did a scan and I have stated the error code I am getting. I wanted to post a video of the unit but not sure how. Also, don’t know if this makes a difference but the two silver buttons to the right of the know on the control unit flash and I am able to do the three button reset but none of the other buttons work.

thanks

Can you post the long coding number.
Go into the 5F module controller and you'll find the long coding. May be coded slightly wrong or something so would be good to see what is set.

Looks like you have a CAN Gateway wire issue as you have two faults there
Address 19: CAN Gateway (J533)
one for the Control Module for Battery Monitoring which i think must be a module on the end of the battery wires (could be wrong) and one for Voltage Regulator which i think is on the alternator.

Have you tried disconnecting battery for a few mins and reconnect? check wires there and at alternator maybe?

No not tried that. I think the battery is the same one it came out of the factory with lol so I was assuming that those errors was due to that plus the stop/start doesn’t work, which from looking online, it could be because the battery is old and doesn’t have enough juice in it.
But it is certainly worth a shot. I will give it a go later and let you know the out come.

Yeah give battery replacement a shot. Let us know, I'm intrigued :)

Just a bit of an update, I have not had a chance to try disconnecting the battery but I found a video on how to check the battery via vcds ( thanks to unlimited diy) and the results were not great. Based on the video, I should be seeing the voltage etc from the battery but it’s not returning anything. So I am assuming I may need to get a new CAN gateway as well as possibly a new battery.
I will post an update once I have more info

I expect this might be the monitoring part but you should check the part number on your current one at the battery terminal.

I kinda doubt it will be the complete CAN module that's failed as you are accessing it in that screen to read the numbers (part 8t0907468clb).

I think if it was dead you wouldn't be able to access it. If it is that I'm pretty sure it's up under the glove box. Quite a few Chinese aftermarket bits like rear view cameras have wire harnesses that plug into that and back out again. If you have any aftermarket bits that might be worth checking.

Thanks for them, I will have a read through them shortly, as I have just been in the boot to check the battery etc and found a lot of water. In the pic, I had already mopped up quite a bit, but you can still see a little water (in red and my car is parked on a slant). From what I can see, the right side was all wet (in green) so I’m guessing it has come in from there and the cable I have marked blue, which goes around to the battery and to the black box (which I believe is the start/stop voltage regulator part no 8k0959663) is wet, so my guess is water may have got into here. I will have a read of the posts you have listed to see if they mention anything

Ah wow yeah water getting in these cars is a nightmare. What about the side cubby hole where the radio receiver and amp etc are stored. If water drops in there it's usually the first cause of the MMI going out.

Actually, I just read the second link you posted and I think that might be it one of the issues. I will have a look at that to see if it’s the same

Well the guy at Audi mentioned the radio unit (called it the 5F module…..) but that is in the left side, plus I tried a second hand unit and it was the same. I will have a look at the second link you posted to see if I can see anything

This thread also looking potentially useful if you haven't already seen.

Just had a look in the area on the right, as in the link, and it looks terrible. A lot of water there, which looks as though it been there a while, bear in mind Audi said they checked all the cabling fuses etc, clearly didn’t check here. I have mopped up as much as I can but it’s started raining again, so I just got to wait till I get some dry weather to pull out all the carpet etc to see if I can see what’s there but the wrapping around the cables are soaking wet

Ah yeah that's not good. Mine was like that on the other side and sloshing around the radio receiver which cut out my MMI once. That was caused by blocked sunroof drainage at the rear corners of the sunroof.
Fortunately I caught it early and after it dried out it was ok.

Just an update. Checked the cable as suggested in the other link, it was broken and badly corroded. So fixed this and now I am getting battery readings in vcds plus the start stop is now working.
Only thing is now I have got 3 error codes for the 5f unit :

If I can get this fixed and get the mmi control unit working (plus I got to check the drivers heated mirror as that has an error also) then I’m a very happy man

Good work looks like your getting closer to fixing this. Gotta be a wire to the MMI broken or unplugged somewhere.

Little update - stop start has stopped working but he battery is only at 24-25ah which is really low, so I guess I’m needing a new battery. But after checking a few forums, I noticed on the 5F part of the full scan, there should be 4 subsystems but mine is only showing 3 and guess which one that is. So I will need to work out why it’s not appearing, possibly a faulty cable somewhere. So will update you once I can do further checks.

also, the radio is now giving me a fault code (03278 - functionality limited due to missing messages) but the radio is working fine. Could be connected to the low battery and control module issue but will also update you once I know more

Any update?
I have the same error codes on VCDS

@MatjjA5

Please,
I have the same problem as you. Wather, start/stop not work. The same two errors appear for the voltage regulator and battery monitoring.
I bought a new battery and of course the problem was not solved. At my place, water appeared in the same place and everything was so wet and smelled.
I solved the problem with the water, but I still have two errors, a new battery and a start/stop that doesn't work.
Do you remember or maybe have photos or a video of which wires are involved? What colors are they and where exactly did you find the problem with the wires?

Thanks a lot for the answer!

@MatjjA5

after checking the wires under the right rear light i ran into a problem. the three wires that were connected to each other were no longer together. i connected them and the start/stop system works again the battery gauge also shows how full the battery is again. thanks a lot for the idea where to check the wires.
