Minimum oil level - DIS

Hi All,

just bought my first S3, and just wanted to check about the oil. ASHS3 who sold me his car mentioned that when it drinks its oil after a few firm runs that its advisable to top up the levels, but he did say that the DIS says something like Min Oil Level or theres a light or something..

Can anyone confirm this?

Warnings usually come one pretty late and i would definately not use that as an indication of the oil level being OK. Whenever you put petrol in, check the oil... Easist and safest way

Top advise rich, I think this should go for all cars now, spend the time checking the oil every week or fill up.

The warning light doesn't come on until the oil is very very very low, mine burnt enough oil to knacker the turbo and none of the lights had come on!

Same opinion here...dont wait for the light. Met up with a fellow S3 owner on here a while back, there was no oil showing on the stick at all and the ****** light still hadn't come on!!!

Personally my S3 barely uses a drop, maybe 1/2 a litre in 10k miles. Some do, some dont - weird.

This may be an old wives tale but I was told that you're supposed to wait for the engine to be cold before checking / topping up ?

( btw I am fully expecting to be corrected within 5 minutes of posting this /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

Yes... But it wills still give you an idea if its OK or not. If you fill up and then check your oil, 99% of the oil would have drained back to the sump anyway. Its obviously better to check when its cold, but its better than not checking at all.

I did 24k in my S3. After the 1st 3000 miles ish, it used a litre (running in I gues). After that I never had to fill i back up. Every time I checked it was fine. All the millage was motorway and I never thrashed the car until it was nice and warm.

Do you actually mean SLX 2? because if you do that might be the problem, the S3 is not supposed to use oil that thin! if it says on your receipt SLX2 I would go back and demand Audi change the oil for free!

Yeah SLX 2! I rang Chapmans (Local Audi specialist) where it was serviced and this is what they used. I then rang them to see if i needed to fil it with anything in particular and they told me this was specially designed for VAG cars?

Check your oil on Sunday morning after cleaning car, and the oil will be cold then.

I may be wrong (have been having a lot of blonde moments lately) but SLX Longlife 2 is not supposed to be used in the S3 only the original SLX as it is slightly thicker and has the correct approval 503.01 or something.

was trying to do a search for the numerous threads on which oil for the S3 there have been on here, then someone reminded me I should be doing the work I'm getting paid for!

you could phone Audi and ask which oil is approved, get it in writing and take it to the garage?

As I understood it, SLX 2 is ok if you are on fixed servicing, but if on variable then SLX must be used.

I've got the 210 and the handbook says for variable servicing 503.01 grade oil MUST be used.
SLX 2 is not 503.01, SLX is.

When I first bought my 210 from Lincoln Audi I got a free bottle of SLX 2 with it. I called them a few days later and said I thought it was supposed to be filled with SLX. They agreed, drained the SLX 2 and replaced with SLX.

yep, gek is exactely correct, doesn't matter which model of engine!
