Ok so after a bit of research today it seems that the biggest restriction in the exhaust is the down pipe - makes sense.
Milltek seem to sell a 3" large bore downpipe with sports cat as a seperate part but also list a 2.75" as part of the complete package.
Can the 3" be made to fit with the standard S3 exhaust which I think is 2.75" I believe ? Or am I wrong here. Or would I need a 2.75" downpipe with sports cat ?
Would this be a sensible option ? - I'm not a fan of the milltek back box and would like to keep the standard mid section and backbox if possible ! Might save a few pennies as well or is this false ecomomy at the expense of power ?

Also does anyone know how restrictive the standard air intake box is & at what bhp figures does it start to become the restricitve part ?

Not really chasing ultimate bhp figures

cant really comment on the exhaust fitments with hi flow cat-standard system but what i can tell you is that the milltek systems are very good. Mine's been on for around 7000 miles and no problems, no boomy sounds, but does sound very nice when you need to be heavy with the right foot. i went for the resonated system which incorporates an extra silencer (i think) so noise is kept to a minimal.... as for air intake, im running a k04 hybrid with fuel pump full milltek system and a cotton green panel filter and this is still good for 350/360 bhp as it flows pretty well.

what you got to consider is that with the majority of the intake systems is that you will lose the engine cover as the standard intake is an integral feature of the cover, and this was my decision in opting for just a panel filter.

although there are quite a few decent CAI systems about.

just up to the individual and your needs tbh

hope this helps pal

lol thanks for the quick answer - didnt expect it on a Sun night !
yes what you say about the air intake & engine cover is one of the reasons for wanting to know how good the standard one is, other is trying to keep it look as standard as possible.
Same goes for the exhaust really and to save money if its not really needed. I can use the money on a fuel pump or ARB's !!

Hiya Richard - not much point going for the fuel pump unless you plan on a map to release its potential. And all stage 2 software which does this requires a downpipe anyway. In terms of performance mods it has to be this order:

Turbo-back 3" exhaust system
CAI (Forge, EVOMs or Dbilas)
Fuel pump
Remap

- or forget the fuel pump and get a remap to complement the exhaust and intake.
ARB's and springs/coilovers are a different kettle of fish obviously.

http://www.carbonspeed.co.uk - this will offer a bit less power than a full intake system, but does increase air flow whilst leaving the engine cover in place. The standard intake is very restrictive.

Wouldn't waste your time on the carbon speed - it's under bonnet eye candy. I had the Carbonio on my car, it offered no power gains, maybe gave improved response in the mid range.... nothing more though. I removed it in the end and went back to stock and the car 'feels' like it has more torque now.

As Iggu said - if you're going to do it properly, go for a specialist CAI, full zorst, Fuel Pump and a map to complement the lot. people with this set up see 340-350bhp which is not to be sniffed at!

I've got to disagree, I know a lot of tuners get on well with the CarbonSpeed. You will get bigger power gains with a full CAI, but this will involve removing the engine cover. The CarbonSpeed is designed more for panel filter type people that want smaller subtle modifications. And it is far less restrictive than the factory intake.

Hmmm, I'm sure tuners will argue that it gives gains if it makes you part with £200. However, the Carbonspeed and Carbonio may feed a bit more air in to the system, but it is still restricted by the rest of the OEM intake. For a little bit more money you can get a proper CAI that works far better.

To put it in perspective - I had my car on a rolling road with the Carbonio and BMC panel filter and it produced 314bhp and 313lb/ft
A mates car, on the same road with ONLY a map (the same map I hasten to add) deliverd 310bhp and 332lb/ft

So - in my experience, having driven the car with and without the Carbonio there is nothing in it and I'd save your money.
If you really want to free up the breathing cheaply and discreetly get a panel filter from BMC or someone.

All based on my experience... and they do look good ;)

FWIW....before going back to AMD for the Stage2+ mods,my S3 was putting out about 310bhp and 360lbs of torque on the standard induction system, plus a full Miltek.

I'm not too keen on removing the cover and fitting a CAI for the obvious warranty issues, and to get those figures out of a stock induction system wasn't bad at all.

Shaun and the chaps at AMD offer an excellent service, and good advice.

Hi Rich (again) as I said in my pm I have just had my downpipe and cat sorted by Ian at Pipe Werxs in Burscough - again not sure where you are in the North West.
Give them a call http://www.pipewerx.com/index.html he custom builds systems.
He is ex VAG so knows his stuff. Check out his S3 caddy
