MIGGZ's A3 1.8t - The all rounder build thread

so both motors stripped and parts sent off to engineers to check clearances and sizes for bearings.
same time iv sent my head through to put new seals and pressure test it and to fix the studs that are loose for the tappet cover

donor block still looks o so fresh

pistons and rods out very tight still so took some force

sump of donor

now onto my motor..... what an abortion....

pick up is lank blocked

failed piston number 2

bore looks rough

piston 1 sleeve had actually dropped by half a mm which is rough, i loosened the rod bolts and the pistons actually fell out the block which im un happy about

pic of IE rods vs stock

and the highlight of all this was this little piece of gold that i have found!!!!

so happy been looking for 2 years for one of these! the panel shop is busy prepping and spraying it for me in a nice gloss black!

Oh Miggz that's pretty **** news!

What were the symptons of the failure?

Sorry to see this man :( Shocking treatment from the last company!

yeah dude put it on fb now as well and i know the mechanic/ ex owner will see!!!

it started to get sluggish and filled catch tank of oil in a 40km trip and when i pulled dipstick white smoke out there

also decided im going to add a fuel pressure gauge to to monitor the car as well as there seems to be a slight detonation as well

but must decide on which one to use

to difficult to make alone, choice?

Hey dude looks like you progressing well, glad you could sort it out before it went BANG and broke more stuff.
From what model / engine is that cover from?

i actually dont know think its aeb eab something like that

yeah still waiting on news from engineer then i can carry on

but decided im going to fit a A/F gauge in as well just to be safe

yeah dude got new rings, they all at engineers to double check everything but from my own eyes the donor pistons looked lovely just carbon build up on them

If I was you and you can afford it, I would do it. If you slip a gear at high revs, balanced motor is good.
Used balance all my golf engines years back and motors were smoother too.

Little update nothing big still waiting for the engineers fml they take long!

My tappet cover is sprayed and looking so sexy

Then iv decided to copy a fellow asn user and fit gauges like he did

I going to run the 100psi fuel pressure gauge, wideband A/F ratio and I'm moving my boost gauge down there. Then up top in my roof I'll put the water and oil temp and in the glove will be the oil pressure

Figured I might as well show off the gauges a little more seeing as I sell them lol

yay pistons finally arrived!!!!!!!!

thanks to ash for going out his way as per usual to getting them for me

and progress so far on the pod

Might only get all the parts on Tuesday then it's solid 24hr days to finish up!!!!

Ok epic time ahead with the build then.
Pod is starting to take shape nicely, tell me did you break the vents out when you removed them to make the pod or did they clip out?
Reason I asked is that mine is broken on my Goldie so if yours are not busted please don't chuck them out.

Thanks dude can't wait to fit it already

Only one advice on sensors which are usually came with gauges - dont use them, they are sh**** of course they are made in china you better buy VDO sensors (the best is for rotax engines for ultralight planes) especially for the oil pressure.

Lol I'm the dealer for Glowshift In south Africa lol been using the gauges for a few years now this is car 3 or 4 with Glowshift no issues yet

So another update

Test fitting of pod, now to spray it black then that's done.

Got my block back yesterday and such a huge thanks to ash and wikus helping me with the correct way of assembly

Looking good miggles!

What happened about pistons? One minute I thought you were using the donor ones, now new shiney ones? Stock bore? re-bored?

All looking very shiney. Fingers crossed for you when it goes back in!

Are you not tempted to get a hybrid now whilst it's all apart again? make the most of that fresh engine!

Thanks dude

Well the was a slight groove on cyl 4 and engineers were not comfortable with just honing the bore so we opted for rebore and new pistons.

Making hybrids here in sa is luck of the draw. No awesome people like BBT here. Only sharks

I'm a little over budget by like 100% as well so even if I wanted I could not afford it yet hahahahahahha

Next up on my spendings on this car is buckets, half cage and LSD / 6speed

No use putting more power then what it can put down

Good man!

Gearbox wise, don't waste your money on an LSD for the 5 speed. make the jump to 6 speed before investing in a diff. it's so worth while.

See that's what I was thinking as well but to find a 6 speed cheap is going to be hard work lol
