Mechatronic Symptoms.

My 7 speed S-Tronic S4 has been noticeable when changing down to first and second gears for a while now, (car is 09 plate with full Audi history and has just gone past 50k miles. It had the S-Tronic filter and oil changed at the recommended 40k interval) but is progressively getting worse, and after a long uphill start/stop traffic jam yesterday the car became awful to drive. I noticed the revs would be pulsing, and the car felt like it was 'kangarooing' at slow speed. There was also a noticeable thunk everytime first gear was selected, and unless you had your foot on the brake, the car would lurch forward as the gear selected!
No faults logged as yet, but I have looked up the symptoms and reckon I need to have the Mechatronic unit replaced. (Don't think I'll bother having the software updated as this is normally a fruitless task going on other peoples experiences)

My question is how much is this going to cost to do, and is it a main dealer only job? Seems quite a common problem with these cars?

From what I've read, a mechatronics replacement is big unfortunately, you're looking at a bill for several grand. Worth seeing this thread and my link to the repair kit that's available from the US, it might be an option for you.

Yeah, big money I'm afraid.

I've heard of people thrown lots of evidence at Audi of reported issues, TSB's and work carried out under warranties - enough to get serious goodwill gestures from certain dealers to get the bill down to reasonable.


My argument would be that it's not considered normal wear and tear on the car and there is a known and outstanding TSB for this issue, therefore Audi know of an inherent fault with the design that is leading to failure and are not fixing it. Yt's negligence and outstanding known issues with TSBs should be repaired by the dealer at no cost to the customer. It may well not get you any where but if it were me then I absolutely would not be standing for a bill of thousands to fix this issue.......and anyone who knows me knows that I can't be irritating enough for them to make me go away

Forget Audi goodwill on these. Also if you go to Audi expect a cost around £4k, indi would cost you £3,.2k speaking from personal experience....

They are a known issue across all their stronics, A4,S4, Q5, S5 etc etc but if out of warranty it's a ******.

Audi UK will do nothing, it's all down to dealer discretion on any discount. I had full Audi history and long standing relationships on prior audis and made no difference, the part itself is £2.6k, then it's an 8hr job or something to change over plus new fluids etc and reprogramming. I'd not buy outside of Audi warranty again on an stronic, and very few aftermarket ones touch them either

There are places that will recon the unit, replacing any valves or circuits that are failing.

Not sure if they can do the S-Tronic but worth speaking to ecutesting.com, they repair/refurb lots of electrical/electromechanical components such as ABS control modules, ECUs etc. I had the DSC module fail on my BMW 130 just after I got it, a new part was £1800 from BMW and a repair kit over £800, they fixed it and had it back to me within 5 days for under £250.

Do you know of anyone who has used such a place successfully? any recommendations on where to go?

There's several places that rebuild the gearbox if it is that. 3D transmissions in reading do loads, and there was a place in Kent. Cost about £4k but cheaper than a new box.
A repair kit only resolves one issue, I'd its the sensors that are gone in the circuit board it might mean a new mech unit

There are a few different parts to the mech unit that can fail, the problem is finding which part it is. You could replace the circuit board and still have the issue.

Can they be rebuilt outside of the Audi main dealer network now then? From what I read when Chris Harris had his STronic fail, he couldn't find anywhere to repair it as Audi don't supply parts to third party repairers so he had to go through Audi. Good news is that's no longer the case

To be fair he got a new gearbox for £4k, which should have cost £12.5k, so for the price of a rebuild he got a new box which includes a new mech unit as they don't sell the box without the mech. He would've been foolish not to go that route, especially since that one failed on him so he got another one under warranty

Unfortunately if you're not a media reviewer on cars you can forget that kind of discount.
But yes they can and frequently are repaired outside of Audi network

Want to say a big thankyou to Auto Vek Ltd for taking my car in for a gearbox malfunction which resulted in dsg mechatronic to fail. P from Auto Vek Ltd assured me and gave a 1st class service to the point that whilst my car was in the hands of Auto Vek Ltd I was being updated with the work carried out with video updates. Very genuine and honest person to come across and job carried out with perfection. Prior to having my audi taken to Auto Vek Ltd, was given huge quotations from other garages but Prakash gave me a honest pricing based on my issue.
The car is running smoothly and drives excellent. Thanks for having my car delivered to me and Thankyou for going above and beyond it was hugely appreciated.
