I have been in touch with my dealer numerous times regarding this and no one seems to be able to answer the question.

From my.audi.com you can download updated maps for the A3. However, are MMI firmware updates included or is that something that can only be done by the dealer?

I can confirm that the map updates do not update the MMI Firmware.

Sorry to bump the thread. But it seems like the germans over at motor-talk.de are a lot more obsessed with MMI Firmware updates than people here so with my less than excellent German I seem to be able to gather the following:

MMI updates are seemingly only issued by Audi if there's something wrong with the version you have. (Which is ridiculous). You can however download never versions from various shady sources on the internet and install it effortlessly, but this seemingly voids some kind of warranty.

Ive sent an email to my dealer as well as a technical engineering team at Audi here in Norway, so hopefully Ill get a sensible reply from them.

Interestingly, in the Norwegian version of the accessory guide for the A3 it details that you can get a navigation maps package with updates maps and that this will include software updates to the MMI if available.

Its a bit depressing that keeping the MMI up to date is so difficult. Last time I went to my dealer and asked about it he actually said, and I swear this is true: Audi always make sure the MMI software is perfect and without any bugs before shipping it with a new model, hence you never need to update.

Right.. because we all know that perfect software with no bugs totally exists.

if you update the software by yourself you will get an error via VCDS saying that the update needs to be controlled by Audi. You can't get rid of the error.

I know I did it, I had many bugs with my MMI and Audi didn't want to update it.

Good to know and thanks for the input! Annoying that Audi doesnt provide a simple system for users to update their MMI software themselves.

Cant say I approve of Audi's "if it aint broken, dont bother fixing it" mentality when it comes to software updates.

i think the car is soo advanced the dealerships cant cope. i have an 8v built in roughly feb 2013 but it doesnt get covered by the 5 free updates ish as built before bw 22 of 2013. i spoke to my Nottingham Audi dealer abut updates and they jus said you can update via MyAudi. which you can if your car waws made after bw 22 ish but mine isnt so how can i update as dealership thinks i canbut i know i cant as not an option when log into my audi! argh! i think they need it specialists as well with the advancement of tech in cars, its not just engines etc these days especially with audi the options list is like desgining a computer! lol

The fact that there's an option to update the car software in the MMI suggests to me that (at least at some stage) Audi intended it to be doable by owners. If it was a dealer only function surely it would require connection of their diagnostic equipment?

When I went to the dealer for a preview of the 8V, the staff used another name for the MMI. They called it MMB and claimed it is the most advanced system in the Audi lineup. Only the A8 also has the MMB and I believe the 8V had it first. The system was designed to be updated and not become obsolete with time. They did not mention who would be able to do the updating.

I had my firmware updated as my Sat Nav kept freezing and would not reset. Just remember it will reset any VCDS mods you have done. It did on mine.

Are you in warranty or did you have to pay

I was in warranty. The Sat Nav froze several times, once when I was driving past the dealership so I popped in and they could see it.
They told me that there was a newer firmware version out so they updated it. Since then I've had no problems.
