apart from the obvious that one has a clutch and other torque convertor, is the rest of the drive system basically the same?, and are all the seperate sections individually sealed, ie the front drive has its on oil supply, the rear diff its own, the centre its own etc etc,

reason i ask is that my front drive has a small leak and wondered if it a seperate sealed unit from rest of auto system, from what i can see / looked up it is but just wanted to check before before i checked the oil level

Yes the box, whichever type is sealed and lubed on it's own. You can check ATF from the engine bay can't you?
 
The centre diff is integrall to the gearbox on quattros so its shares its oil supply with the box. Rear diff is seperate...
