Hi peeps,

My brother in law has a (****** gorgeous) A5 2.0T Quattro (211) Coupe on an 09 plate with 40k miles on the clock and its been trouble free and great for the 12 months that he has owned it. A couple of weeks ago the car started losing oil and very soon various warning lights appeared on the dash suggesting that the oil level needed topping up.

Obviously this is the same engine that sits in the equivalent A4.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, the problem seems to be getting worse and now the car needs 0.5-1.0 litre of oil pretty much every day!

He's been to see a local mechanic who has told him that the 2.0T VAG lump is notorious for burning oil at an alarming rate and that it will need a new engine. Having heard this I'm more than a little sceptical and think there must be something a bit more obvious going on here.

The car is booked into Audi later in the week for them to look at but naturally I'm worried that they will just conjure up a horrific bill for him using the usual sledghammer to crack a nut mentality.

Can anyone let me know if indeed there is a known fault with these engines that could be causing this or if there is something else I should be looking for?

As far as I know the car has been properly serviced at the correct times up to now using the correct grade of oil.

Any help would be much appreciated.

J:)

Oh by the way, just for my own personal use what is the recommended grade of oil for this engine?

There was a reply the other day that said it was a piston manufacturing fault. The oil ring groove is too close to the gudgeon pin hole.

So a piston swap would seem to be the cure. Probably need the valves cleaning up as well because they will be heavy with burnt carbon. Plus a set of valve stem seals and a few gaskets.
Relatively straight forward DIY job, just cos there are dozens of sensors on the engine does not mean the nuts and bolts parts are much different to a Ford Escort engine.
A lad at work has just rebuild a 4 year old BMW engine that swallowed it's swirl flaps, just take your time, keep everything clean and well lubed and it will be fine :)

The 2.0t have a well documented issue with faulty pistons and rings. Doesn't explain why it has dropped so suddenly though. Have a look through the B8 section as there is a couple threads detailing lots of info and peoples outcomes (mine included) I had my engine rebuilt by audi and have had no issues with it at all since. Audi should contribute aswell as even if they initially hold back they are more than aware about the issue. Mine was a litre over 800 miles before the work. 5w30 is in mine.

Yup that sounds like the common oil problem. It will need practically a whole new engine I'm afraid as the problem just gets worse. And yes it does just happen all of a sudden unfortunately.

So it sound like there is a preventative measure, new pistons & seals, would this solve the issue before it suddenly gets dramatically worse. Currently mine is using 1l every 1700miles ish.

Yet another Audi serious issue, got rid of my B7 which had the remoanufactured oil pump balancer/hex drive key done as preventative measure :wtf:
