    Hi Guys,

Awaiting delivery of my new S4 Avant and i am already thinking of way to make the exhaust louder.
Currenly i have a MK7 Golf R which i have done the flap mod to. This as definitely made the exhaust louder.

With the Audi, i am more than likley to do the same as its a fee mod.
What are the other options? I have looked at the likes of a Milltek exhausts but dont really fancy spending £1,700+ on an exhaust system.

Has anyone found a company selling a mid section CAT delete pipe or similar?

Would love the S4 to sound similar to the MK5 Golf R32

    Cheers

Although RS4 imho (a) the standard exhaust gets louder over time as mine started really quiet yet now seems louder (b) the glass etc really hides the noise as the car seems almost silent to me yet the wife can hear it from past the top of the road when I'm almost home. Perhaps give standard a chance first?

    TX.

    PS What is "flap mod"?

Aparently doesn’t do much on the s4 it’s the main cat that needs sorting.

I second this is on my S5, nearly at 4K miles now and it gets better! Even more so when the valves are unplugged :D (Ensure they are cable tied and protected from water ingress when doing this)

I presume the valve mod keeps the exhaust loud on all vehicle settings i.e comfort, individual, dynamic etc?

As much as I’d like the exhaust slightly louder I do like the ability to make it quieter when on a long relaxing drive.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have the Milltek decat and get the CEL coded out? this should make the standard exhaust louder?
Without the cost of £1400 for the sport cat.

I'm all honesty, it's much better at idle and especially low rev range. I know this sounds odd but, switching to comfort and efficiency, it does actually get a bit muted still. In the cabin at least. Not sure why. Maybe something to do with the speakers. Are they still incorporated? Through vibration? Anyway. It's a great little mod.

Wonder if an 02 spacer could be utilised tho there may not be the room due to turbo location and downpipe configuration in the v6 top mounted setup.

A cell fix maybe the answer but with that comes the loss of that parameter feeding back to the ecu and in turn it’s effect on fueling and timing.
They are basically resisters that emulate a healthy oxygen reading.

There's a couple guys over in the States that have tried all the mods they can to get the CEL light to stay out but nothing has worked so far. I think the only real way of doing it would be to remap it but since no one has managed to crack the ECU it's not currently possible.

Both the primary and secondary cats are in the turbo downpipe and I had the thought of having the secondary cut out and removed completely as that should free up some noise as well as pops and bangs but not activate the CEL. I've asked around and it should be possible but I've just not managed to get it to anyone to actually do yet...

On a slightly different note, I asked Milltek about the sports cat versus the standard setup. They advised not to buy it because when they flow tested the standard setup they found that the pressure drop across each cat was essentially the same as they'd normally see from a normal 200 cell sports cat (obviously their sports cat would still flow better than OEM though), purely down to the sheer size of the OEM kit they said. So unless you're doing it purely for the increase in sound, there's not much point for performance unless you're going decat basically, but then you have the CEL issue...

    Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks for that, fingers crossed the big tuning companies crack the ECUs. So I can do the decat and remap at the same time.

That would be nice! I imagine that there's some fairly significant power gains to be had with a decent exhaust, decat and remap!

I think it would give the new Rs4 a good run for its money and with mine being a saloon it’s 85kg lighter. Which I was shocked by to be honest. Only 35kg difference between the rs5.

I'd definitely say so! Current S4/S5 cars with tuning boxes are keeping up and sometimes beating the RS versions from what I've heard.

I'm sure that would release a little extra noise but they're actually extremely small to be honest, I don't think that they actually help a huge amount and most of it is from the centre silencer and the resonators further upstream. And if you got rid of them you'd lose the ability to use the valves (if that's important to you).

Plugs out, took a bit of wiggling but perfectly doable without jacking anything up. Sound is much better at low speed and revs, also cant detect any drone in 8th gear either. I will chalk this one up as a winner!

Are you guys covering up the ports on the actual exhaust, or just protecting the plugs that you've removed?

What did you use? Does the exhaust get really hot? I can't work out how come the plugs don't melt and I'm worried that gaffer tape would be a fire risk.

Lots of very well-placed (OTT) gaffer tape and cable ties. Think I'm gonna plug them backup just to see if they're ok. Cleared the fault on Carista so hoping they're fine.

Upon reflection, I'd have used some foam/sponge too. You can get plug covers for the S3! But I've not seen any for our S4.

I've tied the leads and connection back up on itself behind rear bumper. It's obviously going to be hot in that area but they are shielded with a lining of some sort. It's the original place for them anyway.
