List of registration plates to choose for a new car from a dealer

Due to pickup my new A3 at some point this month and have got a list of registrations from the dealer.

On my last car the dealer gave me pages to choose from and there was a fairly good selection. This time they have given me about 20 registrations to choose from?

I have asked if there are any more but he said DVLA won't issue more until these are all gone, is this right?

Was hoping to get a few different options.

What experiences have you guys had?

I got a list of 33. Not huge but certainly more than 20. It was enough for me.

I didn't get a choice - but I wouldn't have been bothered anyway. I would have just took the first one, unless it was something like TlT.

That would mean that particular company or group's policy. Some dealers offer a choice and some don't as they are all independent companies and Audi 'dealers' rather than owned by Audi. I think Audi AG prefer Personal Plates. Look at any of their pictures of their cars in brochures or on videos. IN for Ingolstadt and the S3xx on an S3, A3xx on an A3, R8xx on an R8 etc.

All registration plates in Germany are in fact personal. The number is issued to the person rather than the car. When the car is sold the owner removes 'their' number and uses it on the new car. The number also relates to where you live. B for Berlin, M for Munich, IN for Ingolstadt, COC for Cochem etc. If you move to another area you have to get a new number issued by the local registration authority.

If you have time to wait it may be worth it but I would reserve the best from the original selection. I love having a choice of a niceish number but avoid the PP brigade like the plague.. Not a narcissist or suffering from memory loss (yet!)

The DVLA will not issue a tax disk or V5C until the full details of the car are known including it's VIN number which will not have been allocated yet. The only thing the DVLA do is to issue a set of 'ordinary' registration numbers to each car dealer which the dealer then allocates to a new car when they register the details over a computer link with the DVLA.

Thanks. I've always had a choice on my previous Audis. I'll contact the dealer and ask for an explanation.

I had a choice on my last two Audis but not on my S3, if i did i wouldn't have picked DruG USE. My TT roadster had the plate DG11 OVU which when you spaced it out read DG I LOV U although i didn't do that.

That could well have been the case with so many cars being delivered it would have probably been difficult to offer everyone a choice so they decided to offer no-one the choice.

One of the disadvantages of a March or September registration. I'm pretty certain I would be offered a choice when mine is registered in the next week or so but as I already have a PP the problem does not arrise. With the last new Audi I had before I had my PP I was offered a choice and choose E565MCE which shows how long ago it was (January 1988).

My A3 due at the dealers next week (this forum is the only thing making the wait bearable) and he sent me a list of 15 to choose from.... Had the same at Mercedes when bought my current car.

Had a March 1st delivery and choice of number plate. It's only a very small thing, but satisfying nonetheless to choose the number plate.

I was offered a choice from around 10, but mainly because I had asked for it when ordering the car.

Apparently the system has changed in recent years, it is all done "live" online now as they register the car through the portal, so if they have to wait for a choice to come back, it holds up the process somewhat, which is why some dealers don't like doing it, if they have 200 cars to register in 2 days, it all gets rather messy.

Every time up until the last time we've ordered we'd been given a list to select our preference from what is available (usually a list of 50 or so pretty nasty options). Now the Govt are closing all the local DVLA offices and getting rid of tax discs I would imagine the new process will be so mechanical that a computer will issue a number and that will be the end of it.

For a start I don't particularly like the fact the first two letters provide a clue of where the car is from as whilst you can buy a car from anywhere and take it home, in some cases it can all go to help thieves identify where your car may be from (hence why I remove the dealer logos and stamps as our local dealers name is a dead giveaway with a place name in its title).

Secondly it seems the DVLA now seems to give away the ugliest most unsaleable plates that couldn't even garner £250 on their sites. All the ones going round our way seem to have particularly unflattering letter combos that are about as memorable as a scrabble tile rack. As the DVLA have become a very commercially minded entity they seem to keep all the reasonable stuff to sell off, so if you fancy something a bit shorter, snappier or slightly relevant to your persons you've got to put your hand in your pocket.

My dealer usually lets us choose from a list of 20 or 30.

So really you don't mind PP's then or else why would you pick one from a list of about 20 or 30, just let the dealer assign you any number plate, that is what mine did.

I do not see the point paying for a random letter, followed by my initials seems very narcissistic. When I ran company lease scheme PPs were allowed and avoided by Audi/Vw drivers. One guy chose J10*** on his Escort rather than an ABS option.. Why ?

If I had a free choice of BS 14 ZYP or ABC I would choose the later. Not a pp but a 'nicer reg' IMHO

If you pick a reg of ABC then in a way you are getting a PP so make your mind up, do you like them or not?

Not winding you up at all, it's just that one minute you hate PP's and the people who buy them and the next you say you would pick one that has ABC on it. I'm just a little confused that's all.

He obviously does not want to pay anything for a registration number. Happy to spend £30k plus on a new S3 but does not want to 'personalise' it but spending a further £250 on a number. It's up to him - each to his own, but he takes his dislike of PPs to extremes.

My life has involved contact with many people of all types and without doubt most of the a**eh***s love sticking their initials on their number plate. Not all but most in my experience . The most expensive car we have owned to date was £60k+ and worth every penny. Money is not the issue at all. Similar thoughts to tattoos as with PPs . But it's a free world and as long as folks bang on about how great they are I will give a bold counter view .

I do like some amusing ones like FU 2 or TO 55 ERS and even picking a free nice one from a list but in my mind initials and the like is overly narcissistic. I certainly wouldn't pay anything!! Sorry Dave!

Possibly possibly not, I've not met them! Hence my intense dislike of the subject matter is based on those I have. Our MP for example has I believe .. L14M FX ..... I love cars not self gratifying pieces of plastic but as I have consistently and honestly posted each to their own, just don't ram your habits down our throat or wind me and others up as a suspect the majority don't give a stuff!
